Here is the last of a long string of kitkat maps (12 total)that I made for Half-Life 1.

http://docrocksmaps.homestead.com/files/Kitkat_Palace.zip

With permission, I converted many of Bob Cooksey's beautiful Japanese textures to .wad format and made this: Kitkat_Palace.

User posted image

The map has very good connectivity and plays well with a large group.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.

Gah, lost my lengthy post. Anyway, things I like: Battery placement, weapon selection, general layout, amount of cover.

Things I felt could be touched up:

1. The healing pools seemed too strong. They also started healing before you are in them proper. The texture on the bottom/inside walls looked odd and didn't tile. Knock it down to 5 instead of 10 and it'd be the better for it, I believe.

2. The tau nukeage. I just really, really want to jump around this map. But I can't seem to jump anywhere without nuking myself. Dunno how the map was constructed, so I can't recommend a fix but it was irritating

3. The rug doors could use a brush textured with TRANSLUCENT (texture name is capitalized, I'm not yelling) inside of them so that they block VIS. The would lead to all-in-all better r_speeds, which weren't too bad anyway, but might as well.

4. Way too many things were created as entities with rendermode texture. It just looked silly to me when so many light fixtures, furniture, etc was rendermode texture.

Also, I'd recommend turning the tree branches and statues to func_illusionaries instead of func_walls, with a clip brush if you want. Finally, the xbow on the tip top of the building seemed extraneous since it's so hard to reach but there's one just down the slope of the roof a bit.

Don't make this sound negative to you, I'm a critical guy and I figure people post maps on Snarkpit to have them run over critically. I know that's why I do. Flow and gameplay felt good to me, I could see this map being a lot of fun.

edit: oh, I should probably say I deleted that player model prior to playing. I don't enjoying getting random playermodels with my maps.

Ok, I have been informed that I was not harsh enough, and that I shouldn't be viewing DocRock's maps as just another map, but as maps made by someone that I should by all accounts hate immensely. Therefore, in addendum to the above review here are some hateful words to say:

All the images of beautiful naked women will offend the homosexual HL players, which, last I checked, was quite a few.

I found this texture that was stretched twice as good as it should be (note the crop so that the image doesn't fill the page, and lack of xatage as well):

User posted image

This trim doesn't line up at all, what the f**k where you thinking? (omigod, cropped again? how DO I take my pictures?)

User posted image

And it's even like that on the other side of the building too! Holy s**t!

The blue texture under the roof on those previous shots is the most ugly texture ever known to man.

You really shouldn't add satchels to your maps because then smart people will satchel the dumb ones.

Teleporting people instead of killing them when they fall off an edge is just completely against the laws of physics. Newton would strangle you with his bare hands.

Once again, I stress that homosexual players will have trouble playing around the pictures of near-nude ladies... It just cannot be stressed enough. Homosexual people are the hot demographic since Queer Eye for the Straight Guy came on TV, so not pandering your map to them as well is just a major, major mistake.

I thought that the use of a pure red texture on the arch was terrible, you should really have had a custom red texture made just for the arch.

Finally, how dare you possibly release a map without first posting a beta here! Everyone knows that EVERY MAP that is worth playing is given immediately to us for beta testing. To think that there are other people out there to beta test maps is positively absurd!

I suppose that's enough for now, I'll tag in the next person on the tag team to slam your map.

goes in

The texture you used for the underside of the roofs is really ugly and doesn't seem to suit the surface it's on. Also, having the grass end abruptly like that into the sky is sort of ugly in my eyes. In addition, the way you made the roof folds up looks rather ugly and undetailed. The lighting seems rather bland and uniform from the screenshots you posted, and you should have atleast take the time to align the trims. Oh, and tone down the pornography possibly; it just seems to make the map trashy, like some sort of run-down red light district.

Sorry if it sounds harsh. But I had to do it. Also note there's good points about the map, but I try not to put down good points, as criticism is about improving the negative areas... Blah blah blah...

Unfortunately, I can't slag like CCS. bows

Just had a run through the map, couple of things NEED to be changed for a re-release.

Firstly, your weapon placement is slightly odd and patchy, all the machinegun stuff seems to be in 1 place, or very close. The longjumps, gawd the longjumps! Most maps have 1, very large maps sometimes have 2, yours has at least 4, and it's a small map! You need to change the layout, you can see from 1 side to the other. Don't like the walkthrough doors, a sliding set would be better.

Also the edge of the map is really fugly, a large wall would be better with some interesting things on it. Floor textures are mis-aligned greatly, I suggest you make them fit properly.

On a good note which no one else has talked about, I loved the action music in the map  sets a good mood like Matrix or something :kitty:

I suggest you look at the cs map cs_shogun, it's very good and has good textures. I used the same textures in my tadayoshi map. :dorky:

like it's been mentioned before on these forums somewhere, when words are used, communication breaks down.

doc, i thought the comment to hate you was a reflection on your popularity, and how your being popular would get you a better review. imo, it doesn't read like an attack at all.

i remember a book i read. it had these giant mushrooms that were sentient, and had a huge eye, with this really big optical nerve wired srtaight to there brain(where else, duh) when they looked into each others eye, they  could exchanged data really fast, so they didn't need words. cool, huh?

nm me, it's the mushrooms that made me say it.

I think it's a real shame that a thread about one of Doc's maps has degenerated into bitchiness.

However, I remind everyone that just because this has happened doesn't mean it's automatically all Orph's fault.  And it's certainly not Doc's fault either.  Come on guys, read between the lines here

So far as I can see, Orph's been trying damn hard to smooth the waters.  Those of you who followed the old Doc/Orph stuff should know that I had no patience for the way Orph used relentlessly to bait Doc.  But give him some credit this time.  It's like kicking a dog when it misbehaves and then still kicking it even when it's good.

/me tips his hat to a long-running series of diverse KitKat maps

The only thing you have going for you is a few of your textures, in terms of looks... The map cuts off into the sky, the texture selection is relatively poor and inaccurate, same goes for the brushwork. The lighting isn't too hot either.

Look at some pictures of a REAL ancient Japanese building, see how the roofs are done, what kind of materials you should put in, etc. Make the lighting outside at night, and put a lot of those Japanese lamps around some Zen gardens. It could be a winner.
