I second Crono, I'm not a big fan of Carrey's comedies, although he's hilarious if he's just on a talk-show or something. His facial expressions just don't do it for me. Stiller, on the other hand, I'm a fan of, most likely because he reminds me of me.

i mean this when i say "I'm Sorry"

to be so disposed as to chose to compare oneself with ben stiller, is... well i just can't express it well enuff.. maybe someone more gifted with speech can do the very concept justice :/

you can't possibly be as big a loser as stiller is... if it were not for his parents both being fairly big stars themselves.. no one would give him the time of day.

the great thing about Stiller is that you laugh at him, not with him -- he always plays the clumsy fool who makes an arse out of himself, and that's the funny part. Jim Carrey is certainly a brilliant actor, but there is such a thing as over-the-top -- a small 5 minute SNL sketch with Jim Carrey is brilliant, but a whole 2 hours of that rubber face dancing all over the screen? It can get annoying. This is why in the movies where he doesn't go insane with the cartoon improv, he's always better. He can at least hold himself back sometimes.

I think the best mixture of this over-the-top limb flexing and restraint is on Me, Myself and Irene, which is f**king hilarious.

carrey's greatest talent is in his innuendo comedy.. he can make you piss yourself, with almost no words involved, and his gift for beating himself to a pulp in irene.. true gold..

but the best sentence in all of movie history was "Irene, why am i peeing like i've had sex all night?"

the best scene, the legendary rhino scene in "when nature calls"

both had me laughing so hard, i saw spots..

stillers comedy.... ______________flatlines__________

I'd sooner stick pins in my eyes and nail my scrotum to the table than
watch the hilariously unfunny and tragically bad "comedy" movies of Jim
Carrey.

Rubber face + Crudeness = prick, not funny..

Just watched 'Panic Room'. Pretty good, plausable story line, and it did quite a good job of building tension. Somewhat predictable at many points, but overall it did a good job given the potential scope of the situation portrayed - worth watching.

Really? I thought Panic Room was a good concept washed out with boring
characters, hammy acting and slow and linear plot myself.. :/ Fairly
bad, but watchable on a mind numbing "its the only thing on" kind of
level, i'd say.

One mans cup of sugar is another mans cup of err.. toxic waste, I guess.

carrey rulz, at least you were not dumb enuff to say stiller was better

and panic room... was good.. only made so by the excellent actress playing the lead role, otherwise, i prolly wouldn't have sat through to the end.

I saw "The Parole Officer" tonight, can't iamgine it will be known in
the States, as it's a very British film (with a low budget I imagine).
Coogan is funny at times, but it's nothing special - he seems to lean
too much on jokes and legacy from the Alan Partridge series off the
BBC. Quite painfully unoriginal at spots :/

Having said that, some moments had me laughing out loud, and then once
more on the flipside the plot was fairly cliched and has been done to
death before.

Very dry humour, sometimes stunted, not worth a rent - catch it if it's
on TV though  Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

Watched 'Spartan' the other day... was pretty good for a movie with Val Kilmer as the main character... But overall, it was a good mix of action and drama, with it spaced out enough so you don't get bored.

Just saw Dodgeball. It was a very fun and funny experience, but I dont know how much of that was the movie and how much was me hanging out with my friends and having a generally good time.

Edit - Oh yeah, and it would have been the funniest thing ever if when Willian Shatner was talking to the kid whose actor also played the nerdy kid in galaxy quest, the kid said "yes captain" or something equivalent. It would have been totally out of context and yet totally funny. As it was a bunch of famous people had cameos, but they didn't make fun of them like they could have.

I've got nothing big against Jim Carrey, he's done some stuff I really enjoyed (The Truman Show, Dumb and Dumber, first Ace Ventura). He's also done some really stupid stuff. Me, Myself and Irene left me bewildered... it was just half-ass gross-out gags the whole way through. Didn't do anything for me.

On the other hand, I have seen tons of great movies with Ben Stiller. Sure, like Owen Wilson, he makes nice for the movie studios in such paint-by-numbers pictures like Along Came Polly, but then turn around and there's The Royal Tannenbaums or Zoolander or Mystery Men - something really unique comedically. "What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can't even fit inside the building? The centre has to be at least... three times bigger than this!" Terrific. I don't know how you could not like the guy.

I watched Troy and The Matrix Revolutions last night. I thought Troy was good, but could have been a lot better whilst staying within the original story. The matrix was supprisingly good. I heard loads of people say how bad it is, but it was far better than reloaded, and overall I thought it was a pretty good film - better than Troy IMO.

I've been watching quite a few DVD's with friends, and I recently came upon these two that I had almost forgotten about. If you can find them, I would suggest watching them.

How To Kill Your Neighbors Dog is an awesome movie- I think it's pretty amusing, but it's actually got a bit of heart to it too.

Suicide Kings is a little older, but it's a great dark comedy starring Jay Mohr, Dennis Leary, and features Christopher Walken duct-taped to a chair for the majority of the film. The story-line is a bit weird, and has a fair bit of double-crossing going in it (some predictable, some not so much), but just watching these idiots trying to pull off a kidnapping is just hilarious.

I just watched Kill Bill, and then Kill Bill 2. If a few scenes or lines were cut, it could have been an amazing 3-hour movie. Instead it ends up being two very good movies at 3 hours and a half.

A couple weeks ago, I watched 2 discs of "Neon Genesis Evangelion". By Orph's standards, I'd say 4 thumbs up. For anyone who prefers a slightly more serious tone to anime, yet doesn't want to watch something so serious that they don't even talk ((I'm not jokingg!!!)) then Evangelion is a good one. The show doesn't really pick up until Ep 5 though, so bare with it.

I guess you could say that was anime... But I felt that scene was kinda stretching the limits of what anime actually was..

Kinda felt like something out of "Happy Tree Freinds"

Evangelion is too overrated.

I just got back from seeing Fahrenheit 9/11

Usually Moore is a blubbering, biased, spout of semi-fiction. Well it must be a cold day in hell, because this movie is straight-forward and fairly accurate with little, if any, twisting by Moore (unlike Bowling for Columbine).

See it ... there's some stuff about Oregon in it too that I didn't even know.
By the way, some of it is a bit squeamish. With very real and graphic footage from Iraq.

Personally, I feel much different when seeing and actual person killed as opposed to fake characters.

[Note]
Hellsing blows.
If you liked Kill Bill's anime (newbie) you'll probably like 'Blood: the last vampire'.

Try some manly anime and none of that 'semi-i-wish-i-could-watch-anime' anime

Try a heavy dose of 'Lain' and 'Boogiepop Phantom' ... they must be viewed in one night, it'd take about 6 hours, but if you don't, you'll get confused, especially with BP.

I thought I'd revive this topic from the abyss, it doesn't deserve to die just yet.

I saw Shrek 2, and it's bloody hilarious. Go see it purely for Antonio Banderas as Puss 'n' Boots, in full Zorro mode. John Cleese is vastly underused though.

I also recently watched Se7en and The Godfather for the first time. The former is a brilliantly dark film-noir detective...thing. And it's by David Fincher, so you know it's good. As for The Godfather, I regret not seeing this movie earlier. I didn't think Al Pacino could be any better as a mob boss than in Scarface. Well, Francis Ford Coppola sure showed me. I''l be watching Part 2 ASAP.

I saw Farenheit 9/11 as well, and I was severly dissapointed. Bowling For Columbine was great for being able to pick apart US society and it's relations to gun violence, and while it wasn't always as accurate or as objective as Moore wanted you to think, it was still somewhat though-provoking and enjoyable. Farenheit 9/11, however, is just a venemous attack on President Bush and the war in Iraq. That's it. There's nothing here that makes you think at all, it's just attack after attack after attack. It's an exteme liberalist's view on the Bush Administration, and as such, it is boring. There's not much ground here that hasn't been covered before. I was at least expecting something new, but nope. While not a bad film, it's still a dissapointment for me. The images from Iraq are truly disturbing however. I'm glad that it will open a lot of people's eyes, whether the film is telling the truth or not.

It has often been said that liberals are not funny (by me that is) and Fahrenheit 9/11 proves this beyond a doubt. The point of that movie, no matter what your political perspective, was to appeal to your petty side: here, laugh at other people who you don't know - after all, there are about ten f**king banjoes playing in the background, that must mean they're stupid!

One realizes that in a movie that is entirely devoted to destroying Bush, Moore speaks more often than him. Fair and balanced.

The first time I saw it, it was great; the second time I could barely keep myself in the theater.

I Saw Spider-Man 2 (last week), Matchstick Men, and Master and Commander.

Spider-Man 2 was awesome to no end, of course.

Matchstick Men was ... well ... unless you think only the ending of a movie makes a movie, see it, otherwise, ITS CRAP.

Master and Commander was the most boring and pointless movie I've seen in the last 5 years. Dear lord, I don't know how so many people thought this was 'the best movie of the year'. It's basically watching Russel Crow refusing to give up. There are so many people on this ship that they try making important characters and the movie just falls flat on its face. Since there are so many, when something 'important' happens to one of them, you don't care, because you don't recognize that character.
There's really only about three characters in the entire movie that are very constant.

But, overall it was crap ... 136 minutes of 1807 s**t!

I can see that me and Crono have quite different taste in movies...
I thought F911 was a load of unsubstantiated propaganda (although quite funny at times).
I liked Matchstick Men.
Master and Commander is one of my favorite seafaring movies.

Haven't seen Spiderman2 yet, although I suspect I will like it.

I don't see it as "tastes"

That's like saying I love all of Michael Moore's documentaries, or I think every movie by Riddly Scott is bad. Or every sea-movie is bad.
Likewise, you can't assume that since I think Spider-Man 2 is great that I'd like every comic book movie sequel.

It all depends on the movie its self and the word 'taste' implies a genre and is incredibly misleading.

Don't jump to conclusions just because of three movies. I could list countless movies that I love that I'm sure many others love, would you then say that those people and I have the same tastes? If you would, that doesn't make sense.

Also, if you liked the first Spider-Man movie, you will probably love the second. David Koepp didn't write it!! It still has some Raimi cheesieness, but it fits, since it's Spider-Man.

Taste in movies does not necessairily fall directly on genre lines. I don't see what you are on about liking or disliking all of a certain sort of movie.

Seen a 'few' horror movies in the past week:

The first four in the friday the 13th series, They get a bit repetative after a while, and are a bit outdated, but still pretty good.

The ring, very good movie, i reccomend this to anybody, except lil kids.

A nightmare on elm street[ 1 and 2] Nicely done, again a bit outdated, but still good, the second one pics up about half way through.

I just saw "Fahrenheit 9/11".

Good documentary, but it got a little boring when he explained the
oil-company-things. (or maybe I just don't like economic things ...
could be me)

Powerful moments:
  • The moment where they're telling bush the nation's under attack. His face !
  • The woman at the and (before the white house), complaining about her dead son, falling to her knees and praying.
  • The nightly search in bagdad (some shaky cam images)
I really, really hope this movie has an impact on the elections.
(negative for Bush ... don't shoot me, I've got several good reasons to
think Bush is a ***.)

The woman at the end is an opportunist. As long as her sons are alive
and she gets respect, she's all cool with the military and going to
war, but as soon as her son dies, WHAM, she now hates bush and the war.
What the hell. When things are OK, she's fine, but as soon as the going
gets rough she changes her entire set of belifs?

Her son knew the risk he was getting into. She knew the risk he was
getting into. In a war, s**t happens. There are always casualties, and
just because you have one doesn't change any of the arguments about
going to war in the first place.

Imagine if before the war she said "I am for the war if my son lives
through it, but against the war if he doesn't". She would instantly be
labeled a hipocrit.

I haven't seen Fahrenheit 9/11, nor do I plan to. The reason? I refuse to pay for political propaganda. I feel something of that sort should be distributed through some grassroots VHS campaign or something, not costing me $9.50 to get in. Oh well, I'm not a big documentary fan anyway.

Recent viewing for me included Spidey 2 (awesome), Rocky (figured it was about time), The Runaway Jury (great) and Paycheck (very good). It's odd, I hate hate hate most courtroom/detective TV dramas, yet whenever there's a movie of the genre, I generally end up liking it. Why is this? I think it may be because the main characters of the TV series tend not to change from show to show, versus in movies where it seems they are very involved in the case as people. Take Mystic River - this detective story could have been used as a plot in a one-hour crime show easily. But instead, it's a movie, and focuses on characters instead of plot. What you get out of it is something completely different than a simple investigation, the climax of the movie is not when Kevin Bacon confronts the perpetrator. The one-shot nature of a movie allows anyone to be a weasel, and creates a bit more of a sense of danger as anything could happen to anyone at any moment. In comparison, you pretty much know nothing of note's gonna happen to one of the main detectives on a TV show.

Anyway, Paycheck was also really good, and was much better than I expected. The fight scenes were kept quasi-realistic, without crazy kung fu or anything like that. The movie played out more like a game of King's Quest than I imagined; I had heard going in that his nineteen items were clues to help him solve the puzzle. As it turned out, most of them were tools that he knew he would need, not clues. I found this a lot more interesting. The budget was kept to a level where the sfx people couldn't do anything ridiculous, like say a terrible CGI fight scene atop a church organ. Not a major milestone in cinema, but a very enjoyable action flick.

It doesn't look like you'll have to pay for it considering that

I think he said in his lastest book, 'dude, wheres my country?' that he doesn't care about the money, i think this proves it, btw, i haven't read all the book, just the intro, but still, it was gd.
