Recently saw My Big Fat Green Wedding and 28 Days Later. The Former being hilarious, and the latter being a great post-apocalypse movie. Good feelings all around. I also watched Aliens again, and it's still one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen, even after watching it countless times.

Yes Aliens was good. One of my favorite Sci-Fi movies of all times though, is the fifth element. Stunning visuals, does'nt take itself too seriously, and great story line. Classic right there.

movies that have believe ability that reflect your views are rare events IMO (<<--points to word for crono)
one example of one is "Bill and Ted's Excellent adventure"
the time travel idea follows mine very close.. the placing of the keys behind the pole is classic..
the alien books were better :heee:

A_S, the only movies Diesel is in that he listed are Pitch Black and Saving Private Ryan.
LXG was directed by Steven Norrington (Blade 1).
Underworld f**king rocked. That is by far the most surprising movie I've ever seen. Mostly because the trailers made it look like utter crap and it wasn't/isn't.
I don't think I'm going to see "The Day After Tomorrow" as most all disaster movies suck ass balls. Why? There's no villain, you can't have dramatic tension or relevance with a natural occurrence. It would be better if there were some villain or protagonist who became a threat after the events or if the natural disasters weren't the main focus of the movie(s).
But maybe that's just me.
There are always the utter failures *cough*Deep Impact*cough*
Armageddon was terrible as well but ... at least I didn't fall asleep in the theater when I was drug to it.

Underworld was alright I thought. Most of the actors were average - not cringe-worthy, but really not all that interesting. The guy that played Lucien I think it was took it up a notch, but especially some of the vampires and the guy everyone's fighting over just kind of took up space. There were a few oddly-choreographed fight scenes such that if you thought about them, it wouldn't make sense. In particular, the scene where Beckinsale pulls a Looney Toons by shooting a circle and dropping through the floor. Frankly, it's a stretch to me that the wolves above hunting her were completely baffled by this manuever and didn't maintain chase. Anyway, it was a while ago that I saw it, and it didn't really stick into my mind all that well, not a flunker but not a superstar either, I thought.
Really good movie I saw recently, though it's pretty old: Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Classic filmmaking, incredible comedic dialogue. I love it when the President, speaking to the Russian Premier on the hot line, has to ask several times for the Premier to turn his music down.
Nothing in the theaters right now really interests me, still waiting for Dodgeball to come out. I'm not a big fan of the special effects driven blockbusters, and The Day After Tomorrow appears to epitomize everything I find distateful about the genre. Even the full length trailer gave little credence towards there being a plot or characters worth watching.. it just has a concept. A little bit more time needs to be spent on the conceptualization stage for me to care about the movie.

I think you're mistaking plot and concept when you say the plot of The Day After Tomorrow was scientifically possiple. To show the difference, I'll use Armageddon, because for all its mindless idiocy at times, it did plenty of things right and did have some worthwhile actors (Buscemi).
Armageddon's Concept: A meteor of cataclysmic proportions is speeding towards Earth.
Amageddon's Plot: A group of oil drillers set out to save the world by destroying an asteroid in space. Tensions mount as this diverse group attempts to work together and an old veteran comes to grips with his daughter's boyfriend.
While you wouldn't get the full story of the plot of Armageddon, you would get that it was there from the trailers. On the other hand, this is my impression of The Day After Tomorrow.
Day After Tomorrow's Concept: Global warming has initiated a destructive and sudden ice age.
Day After Tomorrow's Plot: Uncharacterized guy heads North to find out why it happened instead of south like everyone else. Special effects ensue.
There was not a single scene in the trailer that made me think Jake Gyllenhal was anything other than "generic young everyman," characterwise. Other than him, I couldn't even pick out what other people are playing characters in the movie, I just see screaming hordes of extras.
You don't need to have a movie with gratuitous cgi just to make me believe in the dangers of global warming, and how this warming could result in glacier meltdown, which will result in a halt of the oceanic conveyor belt which will result in less warm water flowing up into Europe resulting in a significant drop in carrying capacity in both Europe and North America. I've studied it already.

Then you'll realise that the gulf stream only warms up the northern hemisphere by about 4 degrees, and that what the film portrays probably wouldn't happen. The idea is sooo 1990's  I'm sure that global warming is happening, but rather from deforestation and other environmental destruction (and perhaps even sun activity) rather than putting a millionth of a percent of what nature outputs in CO2 into the atmosphere...

Fact: Mt. Saint Helen's produced more pollutants in its one eruption, than all of mans contributions since the industrial revolution began..
Fact: there have been numerous ice ages recorded, all prior to mans global influences.
Fact: we will have another, most likely having nothing to do with mans influences on this world.
back on topic.. i just got home from theater, watched "Harry Potter 3" 1 1/2 thumbs up.. the movie was good, the other 2 were much better.. the one high point IMO.. the lead girl actor, is finally acquiring boobs.. i figure by harry potter 5 she will need a bra

I've not seen any Harry Potter films, not read the books, but I have
heard that most people like the third film best. Obviously I can't
voice my own opinion, but this could be yet another case of Orph going
against the majority with his film tastes

you both will just have to take my word for the boob thing..
and as far as the movies go.. the 3rd one was seriously lacking in something. its possible the new has finally worn off, after-all i was really looking forward to this movie, the hype had it pegged as the best of the 3, but it was empty, and failed to capture me as the first 2 had.
i have not kept up with the movies in so far as i don't know actually how many there will eventually be, but the downward trend of this movie tells me the future is bleak.
as i said, it was a 1 1/2 thumbs up flick, but the other 2 were a solid 2 thumbs up.
sighs
its not as if i chose to be on the other side duncan, after-all the potter films have not been talked about in this thread as of yet.. i didn't pick to be on the losing team

I know, I only meant it as a joke  As for the boobs thing, I think
both me and Jeff were thinking its somewhat dodgy to be saying the best
thing about a film is the young actress getting breasts, as opposed to
whether you are right or not!

Malfoid is even worse...I just want to kick the little bugger in the face. And the ginger one annoys me as well. He keeps pulling odd faces -- it's funny and irritating at the same time.
Evidently I don't really like the Harry Potter films.

I will always maintain that opportunities to watch great old films, such as Dr. Strangelove, just don't come around as much as they should and therefore my film knowledge is probably more contemporary than I would wish. This is why I did seek out Dr. Strangelove and thoroughly bathed in its goodness. I haven't seen all of Kubrick's films, but I have seen a few of the others.

I've seen Full Metal Jacket and A Clockwork Orange and read Arthur C. Clarke's 2001. Not quite the same in the last case, but they did work together on the script, right? There were also about eight pages of film captures in the middle of the book.

"Clockwork Orange", "2001" and "Dr. Strangelove" would feature in my
personal list of the top ten greatest films, with "Clockwork
Orange", perhaps, just shading it.
I couldn't be dragged, kicking and screaming, to watch any more
over-hyped "disaster" films - Armageddon, Total Impact etc. etc. I'll
wait until "The day after tomorrow" is shown on tv before detesting it.

Those were all from the early 90s. And two of those movies sucked ass, sloth  .
'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' was terrific. It's been awhile since I've had the luxury of going to see a movie that I knew was going to be good and still not know what it was really about.
I'd suggest it, even if you hate Jim Carry, like me. This was one of the things that I expected as well. I knew I wouldn't mind the people that were in it because of the way it was written (I'm familure with the screenwriter's work).
Like Adaptation, they took an actor I hated and made them have at least one good role
Other then that, the movie is like a 'true' love story ... as in how it would really happen. I think this was more of a drama then anything else actually, but it was very enjoyable.
And just to entice Orph to go see it. Kirsten Dunst is in her underwear for about 8 minutes of the movie. (just kidding)
[EDIT]
I haven't seen all of Kubrick's films because I refuse to watch 'Eyes Wide Shut' ... sorry, I love Kubrick's work, but a movie where you see not only Tom Cruise naked through out, but Nichole Kidman as well ... I don't think my stomach could take it.
Also, did anyone ever notice Kubrick plugs '2001' in 'A Clockwork Orange' ?
[/EDIT]

Hell Crono that will get me going to it, Kirsten Dunst = goddess, even if she does have a wierd surname.
I just went to the cinema with mates to see Troy last night, and I
enjoyed it thoroughly. Its nice to have an "epic" film like that where
there is no clear cut good and evil. I think Eric Bana came out of it
the best acting wise, he played his part really well in my opinion.

I thought Robin Williams was a little more "evil" in 'Insomnia' ...
I think he was just disturbing in 'One Hour Photo'. However, both movies are good.

The great thing about Robin WIlliams is that he's such a likeable guy, it makes much larger impact when it turns "evil".
And I wouldn't really describe him as evil in One Hour Photo, that's too harsh a word. Troubled is a better one. Evil implies that a person is out to hurt someone, whily Sy had good intentions from the start really...
