Went and saw Hidalgo, which was really good. I don't go out and see movies much, or even rent them...mainly because most of what's come out really hasn't interested me.

Ugh. I couldn't stand Cold Creek Manor. Terrible, terrible movie. Ack. They tried to bill it as a mystery- but it isn't at all. You know, pretty much from the get-go, whos doing all the crap- all the obvious clues point to him, and just when you expect them to pull the rug out from under you in a surprise ending- BAM- it's the guy you expected all along. The previews had so much more suspense than the actual movie.

Last movie I saw, though, was Dawn of the Dead.

I don't get out to see stuff too much.

i've not seen any films for ages. other than the ones i've watched on on t.v.

one that i seen some time ago (on tv, again) was an ozzie film called Bad Boy Bubba. it was one of a series of weird films that channel4 spat out, but it must be one of the best films ever, imo. the strange thing is, that no-one i know (or rather, asked) has seen it.

did any of you guys see it?

Bubba, who was the lead character, suffocates his cat (and i do believe a cat died in the making of this), his mother and (assumed to be) his father. he then escapes from the house wearing his fathers preacher clothes, and the only gasmask, and becomes a rock star.

sounds like crap, i know, but it had a quality the transfixed me. even when i felt that some of the subject matter was intensely disturbing, i couldn't pull myself away from it.

anyways, that's all a bit off-topic.

I just recently saw Runaway Jury as well, that was quite a good movie. Really enjoyed it.

Oh, and it's not a movie, but buy/rent The Office season 1 on DVD, with season 2 coming out soon. I know I'm a crazy yank behind on the times, but it's guaranteed to be better than the American version on NBC. :smile:

I don't know about the movie, but the book is excellent (Runaway Jury.) Probably one of Grisham's best, along with The Client.

I haven't seen anything in awhile ... I'm going to go see Hellboy tomorrow though. I'm looking forward to seeing Ron Perlman whoop ass on the demon spawn of hell :biggrin: (Because Ron kicks ass ... not in the greatest of movies, but as an actor kicks major ass)

Um, Some movies that are coming out on DVD that are good are: Kill Bill Volume 1 and The Last Samurai (This movie was amazing to say the least).

Also, Ken Watanabe (Last Samurai) is going to play Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins ... that movie is going to be AWESOME to no end. Nolan said that Batman will appear in this movie the same ratio as the hulk was in HULK. And you know what that means, right? Character Development, YAY! :smile:

Latest movie I enjoyed was "Femme Fatale" by Brian de Palma. It stars the most beautiful creature ever!!! But the story is also nice.

Yes, GOTHIKA was very good, but very dark. It was surprising how similar the basic plot was to The Ring, but I liked it better than The Ring.

I wouldn't have guessed from the trailors. It looked like a hunk of crap with a side of s**tty plot. Maybe I'll check it out if I don't have to pay for it.

Not really a "recent" movie, but 28 Days Later still owns all suspense movies I've seen recently.

Last movies I watched that were pretty good were El Mariachi Trilogy, Lost in Translation, Bad Santa and Vanilla Sky. Going to see Hellboy tomorrow. Movies I think people should be on the look out for are Anchorman and Envy.

I have a hard time believing Gothika turned out to be a decent movie, but hey, anything can happen.

I guess it's just a matter of opinion. Anyway, I LOVE LOST IN TRANSLATION! And I just saw Vanilla Sky recently, how weird. It was pretty good.

Well both of those movies are pretty damn good ... but gothika at no point looked good ... I suppose I'll watch it sometime.

i watched "Jason and the Argonauts" as a child, did i mention claymation is cool.. :heee:

cartoon or anime, its all apples and oranges to me.. i watch animated movies such as princess mononoke, and i like them... the definition is unimportant to me, and probably everyone in my age bracket as well.

i am not above watching, and enjoying movies such as "dinosaur" , "atlantis", or even "tarzan" i see no difference between these and "bugs bunny the movie" or "fantasia"

i know the subject is serious to you, but to me its all ___________flatline______________

By the end of that movie, I was literally asking Tom Cruise to jump off the f**king building.

There are a lot of imitators, but there are only a couple films of our day and age with real philosophical value. Vanilla Sky is an imitator, though the part where you see that chick's tits is nice.

It was a remake of the Spanish film Abre Los Ojos (it literally means Open Your Eyes). If you catch it, that's the message that Julianna Gianni left as his alarm sound.

Woo Hoo!

Just got back from seeing Hellboy. It's not bad. Not great. I think, unless you're a fan of the comic, you won't be fully captivated by this movie. Perlman was great though. The only thing that kind of bothered me was how FBI agents were almost as if they were bait and had no signifigance what so ever ... But that was about it. Everything else is pretty good, not to heavy of a story though (like most first time comic book movies, Think X-Men ... the only reason why it seemed so important was that x-men has a wider fan basis).

Anyway, I liked it.

Cartoons with porn and shooting in are still cartoons :wink:

Generally animes have plot to them, cartoons very rarely do. Cartoons are almost 100% light hearted and aimed at kids, anime CAN be aimed at kids (pokemon, DBZ, etc...) but more often is aimed at teens/adults looking for a decent storyline mixed in with a cool visual style...and more often than not a little bit of shooting and porn :biggrin:

Films I've seen recently...not too many actually. I watched a Hong Kong film called "Infernal Affairs" not too long ago, which I enjoyed thoroughly, perhaps mostly due to the fact it starred Tony Leung and Anthony Wong, and featured the ever stunning Kelly Chen. The prequel to it (a sequel, but set before) was also cool, though not quite as good in my opinion. Still need to see the third in the series, a proper sequel, to finish off the story.

Also saw a couple of crazy special effects packed Hong Kong films lately also - Shaolin Soccer and Volcano High. Shaolin Soccer is a mad film about some Shaolin monks forming a football team. It also features genetically enhanced opponents, breakdancing, a football style game of dodgeball, and Vicki Zhao looking nowhere near as nice as she normally does. The effects are absolutely amazing and some of the film had me in stitches. Definately worth watching if you get the chance.

Volcano High was a good laugh too, again its effects heavy, but then as its set in a high school with loads of psychic pupils that often fight, I guess thats to be expected. No a great film but reminded me a lot of the game "Rival Schools", which was a good thing :smile:

About Princess Mononoke - I think style wise its about as close an anime to a cartoon that I've ever seen, perhaps mostly down to its use of voice actors who are famous. Another anime that is a borderline cartoon is "Castle in the Sky", or it might be called "Laputa" or something possibly. It was another pretty cool film but felt more like an american animated film than an anime.

what if the anime has funny portions?

you know, it sounds to me like, people want to separate themselves from the cartoon bunch, by attempting to create a sub-level of animated cartoons.

i have seen many cartoons.. real cartoons, with no real humor at all.

i must admit, i am really confused though.. i don't see how being intentionally funny is a cartoon, and serious drama is anime

Oooh, Laputa was good, the robots in it are responsible for destroying my childhood and giving me nightmares.

Typically anime is defined by its visual style; a style found in cartoons originating from Japan for the most part. Western cartoons have a look that is pretty easy to differentiate from anime, as the below examples show...

Obviously there are a lot of western cartoons these days that emulate the style that was always associated with japanese anime, and as such some are hard to tell apart on visual merits alone.

Hellboy looks like it should be a s**t film, but it has Selma Blair in it...I'll prolly watch it sometime, but not in the cinema. Even her being in it cant convince me it will be worth the cash!

i admit, you did narrow the field a bit, but all i saw was age related comparisons, 2 very old screens, and 2 quite new ones.

we are still left with, what is anime, and what is cartoon.. i think its going to boil down to more personal preference as in "i only watch anime, never cartoons" so the person convinces themselves that the movie is indeed anime, and not really a cartoon, in essence, denial.

personally i think my problem is, i do not watch anime much, if ever, i watch cartoons, mostly cause of my grandson now.. but my youngest son watches anime i guess, and what i have seen is all crap (DBZ comes to mind)

now, if you count auto-bots, transformers.. i used to watch the hell out of those.. not much humor in those old shows.. prehistoric anime perhaps :biggrin:

I think Transformers would count as an anime, it certainly originated from Japan. I think due to its popularity it was classed as a cartoon, perhaps due to the fact that anime in general wasn't really known in the west at that point, certainly not to the extent it is now.

I had a load of trouble finding pictures of cartoons, hence the age of those cartoon pictures, its about all I could find! Rugrats (the third picture) isn't that old though, and while that is most likely an old picture, the series is, I believe, still going and looks much the same.

Anime is just a style of animation.

It's hard to distinguish between western and eastern cartoons (visual style alone is not enough), so the best way is to simply watch more of it. Films like Ghost In The Shell, Akira, and Princess Mononoke, and serie slike Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Love Hina, Evangelion and Tenchi. I'm not that large an anime enthusiast, so perhaps someone can give better examples. :smile:

Oh, and as for water effects, the part in Ghost In The Shell, where they fight in the pool of water near the beginning, is an amazing piece of wizardry.

Actually, it turns out that Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy, which is anime) modeled his style after Disney, thus the commonly large eyes. But the main way you can tell, Orph, is if it's in Japanese or not, that's a dead give away.

Anime is short for Japanese Animation, that's it. A cartoon is USA animated. Seconly I'm not seperating MYSELF from cartoons, I love cartoons as well, however, I don't think anime and cartoons are the same thing. But then again I also don't think a movie and a film are the same thing.

The only confusion that will come into play now is that most american cartoons have been sent over to Japan to be animated (however, if you have an eye for it you can tell the difference). Such as all the Batman cartoons (the ones from the 90's on) were animated in Japan (thus the Japanese all over the buildings in Batman Beyond).

But seriously, you say you've seen serious cartoons? Well, think about this, I don't consider 'Heavy Metal' to be a cartoon, and that IS american made. See it if you want to see what I'm talking about ... but it's rated R, so take a hint lol.
I would think of that as an Animated Movie, nothing more, nothing less.

A cartoon, used as slang or not, implies a lot of things: 1) Childish in humour (however most looney tunes were aimed at adults in the 40s and 50s). 2) SHORT, 5-7 minutes per episode tops. 3) Not Japanese.

I know that third one sounds a little weird. But you must understand that form of entertainment is very revered. I mean, studios (and people) don't nessesarily see a difference between their live actions films and thier animated films. Ghost in the Shell for example, didn't it take like 20 million to make?

Saying these are cartoons is actually pretty biased and ignorant, and I know you pointed that out before, but now it seems like you're trying to make an argument out of it or something.
Obviously you can't see them as any other way then a Cartoon, because of where you grew up (as most people can't). But if you watched enough of it you'd see amazing differences, when it's done well.

On another note, I hated Love Hina.

Some series' you might like, Orph (as shown in picture four of Reno's post) is Noir. It's pretty awesome. Basically it's about here and another girl whom are assassins. I can't really explain a lot about it, you should see it if you want to know about it.

Trigun is alright ... I think it's overrated, it seems to be a lot of people's 'transitional' anime. Meaning that's a show that gets them 'into' anime.

Cowboy Bebop deserves attention, and even though just about everyone's seen it now, and wont shut the hell up about it, it's still a very good series.

As for Movies, the 'modern classics' are a good start: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D 2 (the first one sort of blows, this is an example on compilations, since the guy who directed it, I can't remember his name, he also wrote it, is Japanese, as in, he doesn't really speak english, this is Anime, not to mention his drawing style is seen throughout the movie. However, it's ONLY in english ...), I belive you've seen this: Blood. It's good, but short, and again, part of a 'new wave' of english dialoged anime.

Anyway, just don't get suckered into watching Gundam ... ew. There's only two series (out of god knows how many) that I enjoyed: 0083. and 08th MS team.

i think the problem lies in the fact, that i have zero information to draw from.. i recognized, "princess mononoke" "DBZ" and "Gundam" .. thats it, and i have only watched the princess one, as the other 2 blew massive chunks IMO..

i think i will avoid anime if those are examples, and wait for mononoke 2 to come out.

Wait...confusion. If DBZ and Gundam are examples? Or what Crono said are examples? Because DBZ and Gundam are pretty damn crap compared to some of the stuff Crono mentioned.
