I think you have the eyes too far up in his head. it makes it look inhuman. try extruding that braincase a little so he as room to think!
What method are you useing? subdivision surfaces? polys? NURBS?

The neck looks too narrow (though I suppose it's incomplete, but I see where it seems to start) And the lips look a shade too small be real...
Of course, I'm assuming you're going towards realistic, and not freaky-doom-monster-of-death

Looks good to me. But Tracer was right about the proportions, your eyes are half way up your head. I guess if you gave him some hair, it might be ok as it is

in all seriousness, i think it looks very much like a native American as is..
add a black haired "top knot" some heavy black eyebrows, and a slight red tint, or brownish tint.. and you have your skin.
high cheekbones, and heavy brow ridges are a trademark of some Indian tribes..
the eyes are perfectly placed if you were designing this person..

Very good job.
Like the others said, the thing that needs the most work is the nose. (Don't make him look like Michael Jackson ... poor model  )

Nobody disagreed with you Orph, but that kid's eyes are still halfway up his head.
[edit] Can't measure the old man because it isn't a profile [/edit]
Nice modification CJ.. what program did you use for that? [I realise it's a 2D overlay]

OK.
Yes Orph, the head as it stands could work well in an american indian model

updated the picture. Did a little with the eye and played with the forehead. I also converted it back to polygons cause I like it better as a polygonal model. What do you think of it now?

I haven't really worked with maya, but I have had MUCH experience modeling high poly stuff in 3Ds Max, which uses the same basic tools as maya.
I assume you are modeling a low poly mesh, and using some sort of surface-subdivision method, to smooth it out. Mastering this method of modeling, is very tricky. Because of the way the smoothing works, it is easy to have your models look very lumpy at first (mine did), until you understand how to shape your low-poly mesh to create the detail you want in the high poly.
I don't really know what specific tips to give you, because I'm not familiar with Maya. I would suggest playing around with the details more, like the nose, eyes, lips, and learn how to control you high poly mesh, with the low poly undermesh. Use reference, and try to define the features as best you can. * ALWAYS USE REFERENCE if possible* sorry, can't state that enough.
Also. It looks like that smooth is at least 2 to 3 iterations, which is going to give you an immense poly count. Most modelers first instinct when using smoothing tools, is to bump up the iterations real high, to get things nice and smooth. This is natural, but wrong. Try to capture the form of your subject, as best you can with only 1 iteration of smoothing. This will force you to pay more attention to the actual shapes you are creating with the undermesh, and will also be less strain on your machine.
Things are looking good Ferrett, and I look forward to seeing this progress.

Orph, your picture looks distinctly like a Northern native American...
didn't the Mayans live in the southern continent (and looked very
different to the Sioux/Apache etc etc tribes - VERY different)
sorry if i seem arrogant quoting American history at Americans, but im
pretty sure of it.. all i seek to do for others is educate
