a work in progress. Working on the lips, nose and mostly the eyes and then I'll finish the ears and skin it.

I think you have the eyes too far up in his head. it makes it look inhuman. try extruding that braincase a little so he as room to think!

What method are you useing? subdivision surfaces? polys? NURBS?

The neck looks too narrow (though I suppose it's incomplete, but I see where it seems to start) And the lips look a shade too small be real...

Of course, I'm assuming you're going towards realistic, and not freaky-doom-monster-of-death

None of them I think. I think he's talking about the modelling program Maya

Looks quite good, I agree with the others ^. By the way, is Maya a good program?

Looks good to me. But Tracer was right about the proportions, your eyes are half way up your head. I guess if you gave him some hair, it might be ok as it is

Yes, it's damn good. I've only dabbled a bit, because I don't have much time for it, but I was very impressed.

in all seriousness, i think it looks very much like a native American as is..

add a black haired "top knot" some heavy black eyebrows, and a slight red tint, or brownish tint.. and you have your skin.

high cheekbones, and heavy brow ridges are a trademark of some Indian tribes..

the eyes are perfectly placed if you were designing this person..

If you are willing to consider the feedback of a lowly mapper:

I'm guessing this is for high-poly work, so you probably want to model out more of the muscles and structure of the face. Also note that the screen you gave obviously wasn't a side-profile, but I think the reference overlay is still applicable.

Very good job.

Like the others said, the thing that needs the most work is the nose. (Don't make him look like Michael Jackson ... poor model  )

Nobody disagreed with you Orph, but that kid's eyes are still halfway up his head.

[edit] Can't measure the old man because it isn't a profile [/edit]

Nice modification CJ.. what program did you use for that? [I realise it's a 2D overlay]

Umm... Photoshop? :sailor:

Took a reference picture I had, pasted it over Ferret's render, set the Layer Render mode to "Multiply", and wrote stupid little notes next to it. Or did you mean something else?

it wasn't an attempt to have a disagreement, it was to clarify my point.. and i see so little degree of difference between the skin, and the child its pointless to point out..

remember though, the child's face has not finished growing, and will eventually resemble the old mans at bottom.

to clarify Jeffery, no one disagreed, but i was however striving to get someone to agree

Yes Orph, the head as it stands could work well in an american indian model

you know jeff, without master ferret here, this discussion is purely hypothetical.. it only swung to indians, cause of my misinterpretation of the word "Maya"

for all we know, he may be making a composite of leps pics he has posted of himself over the years :heee:

updated the picture. Did a little with the eye and played with the forehead. I also converted it back to polygons cause I like it better as a polygonal model. What do you think of it now?

i think, you shoulda left the old picture up as well.. for 2 reasons..

1) a progressive chart effect.

2) you messed up my quote example pictures

I haven't really worked with maya, but I have had MUCH experience modeling high poly stuff in 3Ds Max, which uses the same basic tools as maya.

I assume you are modeling a low poly mesh, and using some sort of surface-subdivision method, to smooth it out. Mastering this method of modeling, is very tricky. Because of the way the smoothing works, it is easy to have your models look very lumpy at first (mine did), until you understand how to shape your low-poly mesh to create the detail you want in the high poly.

I don't really know what specific tips to give you, because I'm not familiar with Maya. I would suggest playing around with the details more, like the nose, eyes, lips, and learn how to control you high poly mesh, with the low poly undermesh. Use reference, and try to define the features as best you can. * ALWAYS USE REFERENCE if possible* sorry, can't state that enough.

Also. It looks like that smooth is at least 2 to 3 iterations, which is going to give you an immense poly count. Most modelers first instinct when using smoothing tools, is to bump up the iterations real high, to get things nice and smooth. This is natural, but wrong. Try to capture the form of your subject, as best you can with only 1 iteration of smoothing. This will force you to pay more attention to the actual shapes you are creating with the undermesh, and will also be less strain on your machine.

Things are looking good Ferrett, and I look forward to seeing this progress.

Orph, your picture looks distinctly like a Northern native American...
didn't the Mayans live in the southern continent (and looked very
different to the Sioux/Apache etc etc tribes - VERY different)

sorry if i seem arrogant quoting American history at Americans, but im
pretty sure of it.. all i seek to do for others is educate

no, you are correct, as i said, i was the one confused.. not about Indians, but about the word "Maya"

it was quite a while before i actually remembered the modeling programs name.. when i posted my first reply, it was with the intent of people, not programs..

sorry, was my bad.
