Other than that, it seems to me like ATI and nVidia are almost exactly the same performance-wise in source. I'm certainly happy that my 6800GT will be able to play 1600*1200 4xAA 8xAF at nearly 60fps :heee: Looks like people with GeForceFX cards haven't done so badly after all either.

I'd love to see what the benchmarks are when the cards are rendering the same image:

http://www.driverheaven.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44253

It's gonna take a long time before I accept any Nvidia benchmarks as the truth and an even benchmark.

Hate to flog it again, but this is the 3rd (possibly 4th) time Nvidia
have been caught cheating now. Valve have also said that they've had to
optimise the game considerably for the FX series of cards. Personally I
prefer image quality.

If you force a different deviceID then you would get a different FPS because it will use different rendering or code paths. Please, I didn't want yet another pointless struggle about ati vs nvida, I thought these new tests out today might let people get an idea of how HL2 will run on their hardware and help their possible buying decisions.

Personally I dont notice a difference between the two screen shots, but thats just me, what I liked was the side by side comparison of the fps, and although I think it was a little stupid of them to conclude that the XTPE is better, I am glad I ordered it....now for the long wait till sept. 20th..... and jeff which is cheaper the X800 XT PE or 6800 Ultra?

They should be the same m8  It used to be that ATI had the XT, and then the XTPE above that. Now they scrapped the XT, and reduced the price of the XTPE. The XTPE was brought in originally to compete with the top nVidia card, which is the 6800 'ultra extreme', a faster verison of the 6800 ultra. But the ultra extreme isn't in any of the tests; not many review sites actually have one, and you certainly can't buy one- if you could, it would be $100 more than the 6800 ultra.

I don't think I've ever seen a benchmark, until now, that is accurately measured with FPS.

Nic ... dude ... I'm speechless ... do you actually have knowledge of any computer-subject besides modeling? Seriously.

based on a lot of reviews, the 6800 series seems to slightly have the upperhand, so if you have 450 euros for the GT :leper: ... (the ultra doesnt seem to be worth the extra money). also i dunno if spending money on a fx is worth it now. if the leaked hl2 alpha is only slightly representative for the real thing, then even a radeon 9600 XT preforms better then a nvidia fx5950 ultra. ( http://www.digital-daily.com/video/vga-roundup/ the 4th last benchmark )

I don't see how the leaked alpha is really relevant when the new source benchmarks show the same-price nvidia and ati cards to be about the same. Obviously valve have made a lot of changes since the leak. Also I don't trust a website that can't even spell alpha

Well it's no HAL 9000 but I found this on one of the sites listed above:

Note the price tag under 'disadvantages'

Wouldn't that money be better spent building a noise-proof ventilated box for the PC you already have? That would cost $100 max.

Added http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/counterstrike-source.html - another close review  Strange to see the nVidia stuff being more competitive once AA and AF are turned on.

That last article you posted jeff was so terribly written it was horrible to read. From referring to steam as "the steam", to the following piece of nonsense...
...and neither levels nor enemies can be damaged
I know what they are getting at but talk about putting it badly! Or how about the following silliness...
While the masses enjoy massacre delivered by games like Unreal Tournament and Doom, there are quite a few gamers who are fond of more realistic games that reflect real-world situations, or, if fans of Counter Strike prefer, operations.
Is that a case of sarcasm that floated right over my head, or are they saying UT and Doom are more popular than CS?

Who knows. Most reviews aren't well written to be honest. The best you can do is look at the benchmarks of a bunch of different sites, never trusting what one particular review comes up with

Who cares about this FX/9800/whatever nonsense. All that matters is, will the game run at all on a GeForce 4 MX 420?

There's a strong chance that it will run on that, yes. Whether it looks good or not is another story.
