You will hardly ever be able to talk to anyone if you just pop in for a few minutes. you need to stay connected for a while. If you join and want to talk, you need to say something more interesting than 'hi' - this is a common pitfall for the new :smile:

Ergh, I was in there last night and Monqui-Chopping entered then left a few minutes later. What was he chopping, bodies!?!? And then the police came!?!? Anyway, I've never heard anyone say anything in there either but I think that's because when I'm in there it's mostly bots. I think Mr. Dingie was asleep.

IRC is shareware, but you can use it beyond 30 days. After that you just get the occasional webpage popping up when you connect, but thats rare.

Or you could use ChatZilla, which allows you to just put in IRC addresses in the address bar. Which is exactly what that irc link is at the bottom.
