? quoting Orpheus
that one sentence kept me away the whole 3 months last time..

And what a nice, quiet, peaceful place this was during those 3 months, Orph.

Perhaps you should consider another lengthy hiatus - and maybe this place will calm down again cuz - to me - it was very peaceful while you were away

Just recently it got ugly again...and hmmmmmmm - i wonder why???

Jeff, that's what I always thought too ... or least that's how it USED to be. Sold a certain amounts of copies it went Gold, then Platinum. That logic is from records I believe.

But, Yeah, it's kind of annoying. I don't understand why you can't just say "It's done and shipping". I mean, the press release would be the same length.

Also, the 'gold' date doesn't really mean anything when it comes to actually being able to buy the game... look at CS:CZ.

matt - Do you actually have to be 17 these days to buy it, or is that just 'recommended?'

The shops should honour the age ratings and generally do - but you always get the occasional 12-year old in the shop boasting they have Vice City or whatever, so I guess the games slip through the cracks somehow.

Right.

Actually, some stores enforce it here. Like, at Target if I buy a console game (not computer though) and it's "M", they ask for ID because their system needs the persons birth date.

However, no actual game store enforces it unless it's a game that requires that age. Like, I think EBX wouldn't sell BMXXX to people below 17. But I could be mistaken.

Not to mention, it doesn't even matter, most kids who get those game have their parents buy them for them. I know I did when I was younger.
The entire point is, the ratings shouldn't be enforced by the people selling them, but more of a warning to their parents of the content of the game.

However, people are stupid. They look at the rating and see "Mature" then look at this game about a bunny and think it's okay.

I think the ESRB are like the ELSPA and PEGI ratings which are more like guidelines than actual restrictions like the BBFC ratings are.

As far as i'm aware, HL2 has been rated 18 by the BBFC so all you toddlers out there will have to ask the parents to buy it for you

Gwil: Bad "English"? Yes. Bad "American"? No, not really.
I've never had an issue with any instructor or book in which they or I used the word "but" to begin a sentence.

My gammer is very good. My speeling is find as to.

Orph, I like how you needlessly bitch slapped a comma in there.

That, was a perfect example of nonstandard punctuation used for great dramatic effect.

And yes, in general I don't think it is proper to start a sentence with "but". Oh people do it all the time when they are speaking or in duologue in books, but not in other forms of writing. Being that what we use here is entirely dilogue... I think Gwil's point may be on shaky ground.

Technically, that's why I put it in quotes.
Basically, the only difference is slang that're used and certain spellings and rules.

I thought you of all people would know that the appropriate style of English writing depends on the writer's audience and the effect that he wants to achieve

Some rules, such as the "never start a sentence with a conjunction" rule, are often applied too dogmatically.

It is interesting to contrast the uses of "but" and "and". Most people agree that using "and" to start a sentence is much worse than using "but". And if you look in a dictionary, one reason for this becomes clear. "And" is a pure conjunction, whereas "but" has developed into a conjunction in modern usage. "But" is an adverb, conjunction, preposition and a negative relative pronoun!

Of course, it is good to be aware of these rules. It is better to break a "rule" of grammar with deliberate purpose, than to break it through ignorance.

Indeed, it is good to be aware of the rules and try to adhere them
rigorously (something which, by my own admission, I don't do.) As T_B
points out, it's not really an issue on the internet, which does have
it's own "dialogue", as such.

The issue is only important in my eyes when people right intelligent,
in depth academic papers - yet have sentences opened with "for example"
or "but/and". It just looks sloppy, more than anything else

edit: I also like to jibe Crono because he is a learned young chap, gets into an intellectual kafuffle at the slightest provocation

I've just received a small present from myself: The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. I am very much looking forward to this quietly legendary book; for now, here is a relevant quote from the formidable Professor Strunk:

<BLOCKQUOTE dir=ltr style="MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px">
It is an old observation, that the best writers sometimes disregard the rules of rhetoric. When they do so, however, the reader will usually find in the sentence some compensating merit, attained at the cost of the violation. Unless he is certain of doing as well, he will probably do best to follow the rules.

Most parents don't understand what the ESRB ratings are for so a lot of young kids are able to have their parents buy them games like GTA. I wish parents would pay attention to what their kids play. I am tired of putting up with 8 year olds on CS.
