Just curious. Since there is no standard HLDM2, and it will probably be a while before the community settles on one of the countless DM spawns that are likely to come....how many of you are interested in doing some mapping for CS:Source?

I already have something brewing, and thought it might be fun to kick this new era of mapping off with some sort of contest, for CS:Source. It would also be sure to get us on the front pages of the HL2 news sites, and generate some traffic for the good ole Snarkpit.

Anyway, even though Cs might not be our game of choice to map for, it surely wouldn't hurt to be applying our skills (old and new) to an actual playable game, rather than waiting around for HLDM. Also, CS is fairly straightforward gameplay wise, and should be fairly easy to do 'right' without really being a fan of the game.

SO... wadda ya think?

Very good idea actually, and I back it completely. Doubt I'd be
entering as I'm mapping for AG2 and will probably need to dedicate my
time to that, but I'd be willing to be part of a judging panel or do
some reviews.

I think it's a good idea. I would love to enter, but I have to wait
until HL2 is in my mailbox before I can get Hammer 4.0/CS:S

Same here.

But, if you want to do a mapping contest with Sources, why don't we just wait until all the sources are released?
Becuase, if you REALLY wanted to make a HL DM map with HL2 engine, all you have to do is make it for HL:S and port some HL2 models, sprites, and sounds over.
It'd be awesome for people who want to map for CSS, HLS, or DODS. And I'm sure HLS and DODS aren't going to take too long after the release of HL2 to come out (maybe around febuary or march).

Yeah, I think it might be best to wait for a little while. Many people
don't even have the tools or computers to play around with it yet.
Surely we can wait a week or two? cough

Actually Valve have said that there is no multiplayer portion in HL:S,
its only single player also  I'm sure it won't be hugely long before
lots of HL2 deathmatch mods appear though.

Oh, that sucks. I would have figured they would have just ported ALL of HL over. But I figured wrong apparently.

I suppose you can wait ... more. Valve really seems to have put way too much effort in CS:S alone, I mean, yes, there is a large portion of people who play CS (only), but it's barely the majority of HL players, I would imagine. Oh well, it IS their game. They can do as they like.

I think the number of CS players is the majority of HL players by a
huge margin. Whenever I start to think otherwise, I just go look at
these stats...

I didn't mean that more people don't play CS. I meant those people aren't HL players. I can guarentee you that a crap load don't even care about HL2 past CS:S. Thier numbers are misleading, just like sales figures in comparing gaming markets. Not to mention, those numbers don't reflect how many people own HL and what each and every one plays.

But seriously, I've met people who blather on about CS and don't even know that HL is a stand alone game. I think that's changing, but slowly.

Heh...still waiting on my prize from the last one

I'd like to take part in another competition, but i'm spending some time playing games for a while - with HL2, Vampire 2, Metroid Prime 2 all on their way in the next few months and GTA:SA out now. And....i've found out i'm getting an Xbox for Christmas so that'll mean even more games to play!

I'd definitely be up for helping with judging or assisting anyone that needs a hand with anything though.

I don't think it should be rushed - give it a few months to let
everyone grow accustomed to the nuances of the new engine and when
people are just about to release their first efforts, we hit them with
a contest and pull in tonnes of entries

I think it's $55 US/year for the hosting, and then there's $10 for the domain name. This is for 60gb/month!!!1

If we do have one, I'd be nice for you to delay it UNTIL the official release of HL2 -- some of us aren't as lucky as you Reno  Who already has VH4.

I'd definately be up for a comp, especially if we can enter dod: source maps, as I've got about four good ideas ready to go once I get my hands on source and HL2.

If we wait till then everyone should have HL2 by then, and even if the mods aren't released till shortly before the comp, there's no saying you can't make the actual maps before then, thats what I'm gonna do.
