Sorry lep, I admit that i knew there was a 50/50 chance that you would just delete my post. Although.. neither vash or i ever posted a link to the actual hammer editor. Again, sorry sorry! I just thought more people would like to see the pictures than those who wouldn't =P

its a crying ass shame when honest people must resort to dishonesty..
i don't blame lep, but i am really disappointed the choice had to be made..
when it reaches a point, to where PICTURES of a game must be removed, thats just to damned far.
software infringement cannot possibly extend that damned far.. it would be like me taking a picture of stolen money from a bank robbery and getting thrown in jail for stealing.
it would almost be worth it, to go find the file myself and just say "there i got it to assholes"
sighs
removing pictures... thats just sad.
before someone turns this into another flame, i don't want or need to hear your reasons, they are prolly correct, but undesired.

It's exactly the same as with the UT2K3 leak. Websites were asked to take screenshots offline then and I totally agree.

all i can say, is if we start traveling down the path of removal, we wont have a lot of forums left.. if you get right down to it, a rather large percentage of our content is questionable, IF you are not selective in your choices..
IMO the MP3 issue is a bit more world effecting, but no one thought to remove it.
anyways.. i think we have went around this block a time or two, and since you have 2 kinds of folks whom will never agree on it... what can you do?
i think tho, that i will start bitching about the content, till we stop removing pictures.

I thikn the problem Orph is that if you post screens of the HL2 leak, you're basically yelling to the community "I have the leaked version", which leads to certain people begging you to send it to them. This latter part is of course illegal.

This seems to be a very specific situation, that somewhat holds the integrity of Snarkpit at stake (respecting the wishes of the creators of the game, in which this site revolves around).
I haven't witnessed any extraordinary censorship here, in the past.

Vash posted a "hammer.zip" hosted on SnarkPit webspace, requested, Orph, by you. And how is that not posting a link to the HL2 Hammer?
This is not a question of illegality, this is a question of right and wrong, and I don't see why that's so hard for anyone to grasp... If someone ripped an unfinished map of yours off your harddrive, and then showcased it about the web, playing it and making half-assed judgements about it, you might be pissed, and if you wouldn't, most anyone else would be.

you are being selective again..
remember it, the next time :/
the choice of topic? unimportant.
if one is alright, and the other not, tis a double standard.
remember who you are talking to, i do NOT acknowledge copyrights, so, your examples are completely misdirected.
i do however understand who's site this is, BUT we are currently NOT talking about ownership, but selective thinking.
i can split hairs with you all day, but if you are going to spout bulls**t like "right/wrong" you need to establish how far you are willing to take that thought.
if you are willing only to acknowledge software piracy, and overlook music piracy, then YOU are the wrong person to have a sayso.
i at least feel they are the same, even if i fail to acknowledge they are indeed wrongs.
are we talking censorship? not really, at least i am not.
if anyone else is, you need to avoid my conversation, cause its not about that subject presently.
i can however switch topics to it, cause i have a hard-on for anyone committing that sin.
censorship is worse than piracy, by a long shot.
chose your topic, do not attempt to blend them all into one.

I think the real reason it had to be removed is simple: Lep doesn't want any phone calls from HL2 lawyers.
Seems sensible to me shrug.

Having movies and songs that are already out is also a little different than releasing information of a product that is in development. You're just lucky this isn't the government because if you posted schematics to their newest weapon you'd be dead before you finished reading this post. VALVe hasn't made their money yet, song writers and movie makers have. Don't throw this stuff around here, I support removing pictures and files of it 100%.

I didn't post the pictures to say, "hey look, i have the leak!". For those of you that saw them when they were up, they showed detailed explanations of many new features in hammer. I felt that since i had already taken the risk of getting the leak, i could satisfy some your guys' curiosity by simply giving info.
BUT... i'de be lying if i said that i didnt know in my mind that it was wrong. I knew there was a chance lep wouldn't like it, but i posted it anyway. I didn't know vash had posted the actual hammer exe.. lol dewd vash! Anyway... like i told gollum once;
Dragons and tigers will never completely agree =P
now seriously guys, i'de much rather this thread just stop. I just wanted to apologize for what i did - not raise the whole question of whether or not i should have been able to do it.

don''t swaet it tim, things are slow and boring around here, why else would a stupid thread like this progress so far
besides, i know i am right, everyone else knows it to, once they stop to actually read what i wrote.
seriously tho, aren't those some cool screenshots of that mountain fortress
anyways, the only important thing is, lep felt the need to remove them, and did.. end of that portion... now on to the music threads :dodgy:

i dont mean to anger anyone, but i myself felt the need to check out the screens, according to one i saw, WAD files are nolonger in-use as of HL2 and that now .vmt, and .vtf files would be the replacement... does anyone know wtf these files are, and if this is going to complicate wad creation?
P.S. from the looks of the screens, atleast the ones i saw, this leak looks to be nothing but a hype boost for the LONG delayed HL2. wasnt anything major that i hadnt already seen. however im rather priviledged
P.S.S LOL gl with your battle for non-selective-ness around here orph. copywrites are the work of the devil lol

dont get me wrong orph... i wasnt pointing fingers or blame, or anything at anyone.
"i dont mean to anger anyone"
if anything i was attempting to jump on the non-selective bandwagon  i totally agree that while lep has the right to do whatever he wants to this site, it is rather hypocritical that he doesnt do the same for all things that may bring lawyers to his door.

In response to Sinner_D's question, .vmt files are like mini wad files for each individual texture. They contain bump mapping info, surface sounds etc. and the texture itself. These .vmt files can then all be put into .zip files which act like you're standard wad package.

oye, forgive me for giving more hl2 info... but i want to clear up the vmt/vtf thing. vmt files are just 1k txt files that act as controllers for vtf files. The vtf files actually contain the texture itself - but hammer looks for the vmt files because they contain all the info on a single texture. for example, a blend texture consists of one vtf file. That vtf file, however, points to two or more textures to be used for the blend. This is also used with bumpmaps and envmaps, like loco already told ya ; ).
Basically, a vmt isnt a pack, but directions on where the texture is.
Hope this clears things up ; )
:braces for a caining::

I wonder if we are going to be able to bake all of these things (sounds, textures, skymaps, models) into the bsp? It would be nice to not worry about making sure all the resources go to the right folders.

on the one hand, I would hope so- but from their point of view, if it is only stashed insinde the map file that will use it, it makes for a poor design structure.
Look at it this way- say they have a model for a tree that shows up in more than one area of the game. Which would be more sensible? Having one copy of the tree stored in some folder on the comp, or have each map that uses the tree store the tree in the map itself?
I'm sure they will allow some more integration, but I wouldn't bet on it being all inclusive like most people want.

Well, I remember them talking about a sort of zip file for map resources, so possibly it will just bake (I just love that term for some reason) the files into whatever map format they use, and distribute them to the right folder - discarding any redundancy.

Finger is talking about a -wadinclude, but for everything. You don't HAVE to wadinclude. It's a stupid idea if you're using the same wad for multiple maps - hl.wad isn't included into any of the HL maps, that'd be a poor decision. But if I make one map with one custom texture or WAV or whatever, I don't want to distribute them separately, it's just too much work for all involved.
