Sorry about that downtime. Looking for a new website host, and am thinking about GoDaddy. Anyone got any cheap suggestions for a site that needs about 1gb HD/50+gb bandwidth?

if it comes down to cash lep, i am quite sure we can help. don't settle for to low a host, just because they are the cheaper choice.

i can only speak for myself but, i personally would contribute, with no gratuities expected in return. being here.... tis plenty of return on the investment IMO.

all you would need do is, figure out how to get my paltry contribution into your pocket, from arkansas.

in case it slips through the cracks, i am very glad to be here and my thanx for running such a site.

This is one I found while also looking for a new host that has some pretty killer packages at a low price, but it seems to be on a timer most of the time. Reviews have been pretty good, too.

http://websitesource.com/hosting/power_plan.shtml

I recommended this one to the Nightwatch guys for their site as well, and they went with this one.

I can't give personal preference on either, as I was fortunate enough to find myself with free Speakeasy hosting worth about 6 times what I was previously paying

(On a similar note, please note my new site address and update any bookmarks or, more likely, links accordingly  ).

I share Orph's sentiments exactly. Don't go for cheap and unreliable
hosting, as I'm sure the community would not mind contributing
financially to something that so enriches our mapping lives. I have no
problems ponying up some doe.

Oh man its good to have this place back, lets not ever fight again.

Oh how I missed this place  I found myself so lost on the internet
without my home to return to. Ah well, whats past is past, I'll get
over it  Like the others, I'd be willing to donate some towards
hosting, though being a student I couldn't make the most sizeable of
contributions.

I still think it would be nice to have a pit bank of sorts that people
can donate to and fund extra things for the site - game servers, better
hosting, that sorta thing.

(ps. while I tried to submit this post the pit went down again! argh!!!)

Right, I've gone for Globat, and will consider setting up a donations system (I'd prefer it if I could specify a 'target' amount and not accept any more after that, but ah well!) for servers and the like...

The companies I was looking at don't offer HL2DM as a main option, YET
  • but that's the deal I was looking at. It would either be a 10 player
international server with up to 5 mods, or 5 mods on an 18 player UK
server.

My thinking was that it would be used as a place to showcase the best
custom maps, and with dedicated "playtesting" times for maps from the
"Maps" forum which were under development. As it stands, it's all up in
the air until HL2DM is sold as an option for rentable servers.

I would probably also initiate some kind of PayPal scheme, as the
lowest quotes I have (with guaranteed performance after doing a little
research) are looking at least double what is paid on site bandwidth
(ATM anyway). I have the cash to purchase it, just not the things I
want from it

Welcome back snarkpit (hai? hai=='yes' in Nihongo)

I've been considering purchasing a dedicated server service from a
provider like IPowerWeb ($69 a month for the minimum system needed to
run hl2dm), setting up a hl2 dedicated server on it, and then renting
out either a hl2-dm or cs:source server. The specs for the $69 a
month system wouldn't allow for more than a single server to run at a
time, howerver, so it would be a big money loser, even with my using it
to also host my domain  .

They have a virtual server account system for only $19.95 a month, but
I'm not sure if these VS's give the root level access required to
set-up a dedicated server. If they did, I could rent out a hl2-dm
server at $10 a month, and the remaining $9.95 would be offset by using
the server to host my domain as well.

Also, seeing as Nihongo doesn't use the same characters as us to write words, then 'hi', 'hai', 'hiy' etc. are all the same thing really

Hey Lep glad to see the site is back. I'm nearing completion of my
hl2dm map and it will be great to get some playtesting and comments on
it. This site and its users are the best.

I think you may want to reconsider globat.com, these reviews do not sound promising.

Many people complaining about billing problems, site downtime, email
downtime, clueless tech support, one guy even says he got emailed the
login and password of another customer's site...

http://www.webhostingunleashed.com/reviews/globat-com-reviews.htm

For my personal site I'm using www.hostmysite.com

They are very fast and reliable and have excellent support.

The tradeoff is less bandwidth which is fine for me but probably not enough for this site.

Lunarpages.com gets good reviews, and is very affordable for there basic package (I'm currently with Lunar), but they only offer two package options, and the price of there high-end one is too costly for the space/bandwidth provided.

ipower.com has more package options than lunarpages, and still gets pretty good reviews. They are also a large-scale commercial host, so you don't have to worry about them suddenly disappearing one day. They have have scaled plans starting at $7.95 a month for a year commitment. They also offer a virtual dedicated server package for $19.95, which might be suitable even for running dm servers...maybe. I'm looking into this myself, this week.

Some people also like hostrocket.com

PS: Sorry for all the edits in the previous post...I pasted from JWPce to MS Word, then to here...which messed up the bbcode somehow. Had to edit a few times to get rid of the 'bugs'

If you go to this site:

http://whois.webhosting.info/

you can see how many domains are hosted on the same IP as your site

so if you type in snarkpit.com you will see there are 68 domains currently on the same IP as yours.

If you type in davidsmall.com (this is the first site I found that uses globat)

you will see there are 959 domains on the same IP. Seems to me they
crowd as many sites onto the same server as possible.. thats how their
rates are so low

My site IP has only my site on it, I can actually type the IP in to go to my site

Also here is a nice site for testing average ping to a site (it tests from multiple locations in north and south america)

http://www.hostpulse.com/hosting/networktools/pingresult.asp

for snarkpit.com the site reports average 292ms

and for my site at hostmysite.com it reports average 21ms

Globat sites dont reply to ping requests so you can't test them there
but I did a tracert to davidsmall.com and before it timed out I was
around 100ms (I'm in Ontario, Canada)

oktagone like you said is in australia,

hostmysite is in Newark Delaware

globat is in L.A. California

Anyway just wanted to give you some more info to consider.

A typical Paypal Donate button would suffice. Any excess goes to you for your hundreds of thousands of hours staring at your 15inch flatscreen coding this website.
