Whats your other haunts, and post some names of some fantastic HL2DM maps here.

I will have to create a list, but I have seen some top notch releases of late.

I also would like to ease the acquisition process by starting this thread. I have hopes that we can each contribute at least some names to seek. a couple screens wouldn't hurt either. (of the 100k variety please.)

Please post the IP address of your other favorite servers for us to add to our fav list.

Actually... when I play DM, I do only frag the SP server and SP
maps. I don't play much, I'm more of a Natural Selection guy.

I ain't saying that I'd come find you, but perhaps others might if they knew where.. post the IP.

[EDIT] Will wonders never cease?? I actually found a killbox i might venture to say, "I enjoy".. its still a box, but it has so many things inside it that it can be overlooked, to a point.

If you get time, you killbox lovers, play the map called "fy_iceworld_sim_v5"

yup its that awful name, but i saw nothing "Icy" about the map at all. /methinks someone is cashing in on the name to get iceworld lovers to frag it. shrugs I dunno, but its unique enough that you can overlook its strange layout.

I liked the remake of dm_lambda_bunker I came across. Don't have
an IP for the server, but you guys should check it out if you get a
chance. It's faithful to the original.

recommend any other maps I'll make sure they're not already here.

You know, when I posted this I fully expected at least 100 maps by now. (nearing the 8 hour mark)

Has HLDM really gone to the dogs, or are our members just that petty as to not bother posting about the maps they like to play?

When HL1 was out, my maps folder was like 4 gigs. Yeah it had a s**tload of mapping crap in there but a fair portion was good old .BSP's.

Anywho's, I almost regret posting this thread now. I really didn't want to know this bit of information about my fellow members. :/

/me goes back to bed, before I really get grumpy.

ok...my fav map right now is dm_big_traps_final or something like that. It can be found on [LOLOBUBU]'s server @ 213.251.144.43:27040 or at The One and Only Doghouse (24.131.224.183:27015). Also at the Dog House is Wall-Mart_v4 which is basically a big parking lot with walmart, subway, gear, and some other stores. It is your one-stop frag and shop! Yes Wall-Mart is spelled wrong for 'legal' reasons.

Also, another great map with tons of secrets is dm_mayan_sanctuary. It is a HUGE map with a big temple and great outdoors area. The map can be found at The Santuary UK. The Santuary UK has a good sleugh of maps, too, as well as dm_castle_overload...a port of the hl1dm map, with better textures and some optimizations. Another map found on that server is mayan_sanctuary_reloaded. Which is a completely different map from the similarilaly named map. It is beautiful in parts...PLENTY of secrets and great connectivity....especially if you know which walls to open

I would first suggest: dm_mayan_sancuary, then sanctuary_reloaded. Big Traps is great novelty fun as it has: a chamber which fills with gas untill you are dead, a room full of spinning lasers that burn you into a crisp if you touch them (it IS possible to live through it if you know their pattern), a pit which a big wall crunches you, a room wheres spikes kill you, a big rolling ball trap (which is the highlight of the map), a huge maze and other goodies.

Wall-Mart is nothing special, but worth a look for fun. They keep updating the map, so it may get better.

Is it Christmas already  .

To be honest Orph I don't find myself playing much HL2DM, and
especially not on any servers other than those in Australia and the
SnarkPit (thats only when other pitters are on). I play a fair bit of
DOD as I'm in an Australian clan (Buried Alive Rulz), and have been playing CS: Source a
bit lately, though its really annoying with those crappy hit boxes.
Again I play these mainly on Australian servers.

This is sad when you think about it. I honestly think it has more to do with the weaponry that the hitbox bug. I cannot speak for everyone, but I personally hate that gravity gun and the tendency to fill a map with items for its use. People just don't long to frag anymore, and I think its the lack of quality weapons.

I remember sharing maps with everyone for HL1, it seems the only person here that I share this fondness for is Juim. Most of the best maps I have came from his server.

sighs

oh well, perhaps I will just keep looking on my own. I would suggest that some of you stymied for ideas, go server hopping. There are some fantastic maps being released. Apparently, Snarkpit hasn't yet cornered the market on "Best" mappers out there.

The map of the month over at interlopers looks pretty nice and it seems
to have been well received although I haven't played it yet.

It's called dm_fallout, made by a game called ShaDoW. Here's some
pictures and a DL : http://forum.interlopers.net/viewtopic.php?t=2794

And to be honest, I don't play that much DM. I prefer team games
with objectives. DoD, CS, and TFC all do it for me.
However, sometimes it is fun to frag on DM maps to blow off steam.

You know what I want. A true "Last man standing" Mod.

HLDM has just way to much emphasis on total kills. No real time is spent on skill. Hence the killbox craze. You do not know (or maybe you do) how many times i hear some crybaby complain about the lack of items. "This is boring" or "Where is everything, I can't find enough ammo?"

If people were forced to use stalking and hunting skills in a game to remain alive to the end to win, that would be so much the better.

Also, to prevent camping techniques degrading the fun to ZERO, you would need to place a total weapon strip over the map so that every few minutes you would be forced to move out into the open to get more.

I could just imagine a game of campers.. "You gonna hide all day?" "you first, chicken", "Am not" "are too"..

The only way a mod of this type could work would be to force people out. In the end though, I feel that it would be the all time best "Bragging Rights" mod out there.. People always talk about CS as if it were special, but just imagine claiming to have won Blah.Blah amount of last man standing rotations.

I think one of the reasons CS is so popular (and one of the reasons I
always come back to it) is that every round is in effect a little game
of "Last Man Standing." There really isn't a feeling like being
outnumbered 5 to 1 and then coming out victorious. There's a
tension in that situation that I rarely feel during a game of
deathmatch. The only thing that comes close to that is when
there's a frag cap and you're neck and neck with a couple people and
its a sprint to see who reaches 100 frags first.

I am not truly versed in CS, but every time I play its always just a glorified HLDM.. No real "Team" in it. you have the "cans", and "cannots" completely at odds with each other.

If it were truly team based, you would have the cans, promoting the cannots to be better and winning through... "teamwork"

All I ever see/hear is the "elite" browbeating the n00b's.

Anywho's, I have no interest in a mod that doesn't "force" you to play at your best. For all its faults, HLDM comes the closest to doing that. If you subtract the times you die, from you kills, you can get a fairly accurate account of someones skill level. CS? I don't see that at all, or worse, for a team game, thats ALL I see happening.

Well, for CS you can either play in public servers where you will
rarely ever see teamwork, or you can play in leagues with a clan.
They are extremely different experiences. CS in pubs usually
boils down to deathmatch, but clan matches are another matter
entirely. All the faults you've listed about CS don't exist on
the competative scene (except for some egoism and too much pride from
some clans).

But even pub play I find superior to HLDM, and it's not because I think
I'm playing a team game. It's because when I kill someone
it's more satisfying because I know they just had to spend money to buy
their guns and equipment, and now they're sitting out for the rest of
the round, watching me and others play it out. When you're the
last one left, people on your team are undoubtedly watching you play
(often through the first person perspective) and the feeling of your
every move "being watched" is pretty exciting.

And to be honest, I feel like there is more strategy going on.
While DM definitely takes a lot of skill because you have to have great
aim, great reactions, and a good route through the level, I find that
the route you take in CS is more than just what weapons are available
along the way, but also where it puts you in relation to the enemy and
your objective.

To each his own I guess, and while CS doesn't appeal to everyone I have
a feeling that if you ever wanted to play a game of CS and you had
someone you knew by your side, sweeping rooms with you, and covering
your back as you defused the bomb, you'd see where the appeal
lies. I don't know if you even have it on your computer (I doubt
it) but I'd be happy to play some rounds with you with the hope that
you'd enjoy yourself a little bit in having a real teammate around.

When HL2DM first came out I was looking for maps that allowed you to drive in those cool buggies and I found some cool ones!

I did notice however a map name that I am sure you will recognise:

dm_sdk_vehicles

Ring any bells? It's the sdk map by Valve but with one twist it had no cars :/ BUT there was something in it that truly amazed me and makes me like it so much:

I just noticed I have no screenshots of it :/ So I will just tell you...
The reason I was amazed by it was because it had this huge tower with an elevator and lots of stairs. It was very cool to shoot a crossbow at someone who was at the top of the tower and watch him as he is shocked and falls to the ground

The tower isn't some crappy square one but a rather nice looking round one with great textures.
I just love it!

Another map I like is dm_lakeside which I can't seem to find on the servers anymore...I only played it once and it was pretty cool

I agree with you completly. I am in a clan for CS:S called Egokillers. Gameplay on the pub server is completly different, then the gamplay when we lock the server and play as a team. Even when we are all pubin we use teamwork.

Orph I'd say you should play with Morphine and see that CS:S does actually have some good aspects. I'd even play with you guys just to play as a team.

I hope you consider it!

I am sorry guys, I truly have no interest in CS. Consider it a "once shy, twice bitten" type of thing.

Anywho's, back on topic. I have so many excellent maps now. Well they would have been excellent had they been Snarkpit members. These maps must had almost no feedback stages.

For instance, I have this prime Dam themed map. It has excellent frame rates, especially considering its grand scale. The problem is, ALL the weapons are in the sniper locations, with almost none anyplace else. The game play is so out of balance its awful. I just groan and mumble "If only they had asked me"

Some of my favorite maps are of the 2 on 2 variety, or 4 maximum type of maps. they are small but have a well balanced setup. Two that come to mind are "DM_Six" and "DM_Carousel" I think they are named. If you get a chance, check those out.

And to affirm an earlier post. I HIGHLY suggest DM_Mayan_Sanctuary" most excellent gameplay.

Maybe it's the current lack of a large reviewing website for HL2DM? I too remember having my HL1 maps dir being gigabytes in size...and got almost all of them from the old Radium reviewing website.

Whilst it is possible to jump on a new server and try out some new HL2DM maps, I'm not particularly keen on this myself as I've been biten a number of times wasting time encountering poor levels and moving from server to server, then having to trawl through my maps dir and delete all the chaff.

I have a new favorite map. Yes Orph its for CounterStrike.. if you get a chance just take a look at a few of the maps, no need to play the game.

de_inferno is just truely amazing. I felt as if I was right in the middle of a quiet old Italin or Mexican villiage.. The fish in the pond, the bells each with its own tone, the uneven stairs, the clay pots and flowers in them, the little kitchens in the houses, the winding stair case, the different levels, and then the surrounding sky box with the hills and trees and distant buildings.. The way the two tanks block the one entrance to the villiage and the Counter Terrorist start there was a nice touch. The way the generator and lamp were set up in the construction zone.. the cannon and the tarnished plate with the map name and kudos to the oringinal map builder, all very nice touches. As a mapper I hope to some day be this good. The attention to detail in this map is just awesome.

This map has become my favorite.

There was a map made by orph, that was sci-fi, wth blue lights and winding halls that was amazing back in old hldm days.. Id love to see an pdate to that map in source.

Check out this interlopers map of the month, this time for CS:S:

http://hl2.scrapdump.com/alexroyce/de_crookcounty/

I haven't played it yet (since my computer would likely explode) but
apparently it's a huge, and hugely detailed map with room enough for 64
players. The bsp is 30 megs.... and its full of custom content
etc.

Has anyone played this beast? It's definitely the nicest looking
and most detailed living creation I've ever seen (well... in
screenshots), but I'm not sure its playable. Anyone?

Whoa! I WAS sick of city maps but this is VERY big and beautiful. That looks like some territory for some seriously nice gameplay. I'm pretty impressed. For as simple as the maps' theme is, it is pretty wicked.
