Hey, I'v been forced to write a Computer Ethics essay, on account of sending an inappropriate email on the school network, which was a bat file which caused the user to log off. What do any of you think of my situation?

What, you believe I should be banned, even though the victim was a friend of mine, and he accepted it as a practical joke.

No he thinks you should be banned because you just spammed the general banter forum with several threads. And if this is any indication of the frequency of threads you'll end up making periodically: it wont be well received.
In short, if you screw around on the school's network: it's their say. They probably made enough public points about abusing school property (in which this would be considered).
I remember at the High School I went to, if you did anything on the computers that wasn't school related they kicked your ass out. They were computer Nazis like that.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

The rules are there for you to read, so when you break them its your ass.
Even if it was your friend they have to do the same thing they would do to anyone. "the law is blind"

If we all went by your ways, then I could walk around town burning things my m8s things with a flamethrower or rocket launcher, and when the police come, I'd say - "It's my m8s, he finds it funny!"
It doesn't work like that at all you know! Practical jokes are only funny if the consequence doesn't take more than 30 minutes to fix.

I agree. But the IT co-ordinator at my school say's it's a questoin of ethics, and concerning the action taken.

It wasn't really a virus, since the "victim" had to click on the icon, and then 'Run'. And it wasn't really disguised as anything else.

Well when i download an infected .exe file, i still do need to click on it to execute the virus. Also your file cause undesired performance for the user, which basicly is a virus. I don't really consider it a virus, but your IT guy seems to. Keep that type of stuff out of shcool next time:-)

I think it's unethical to try to get out of a punishment essay by trying to dredge up points online. Course I'm probably just feeding the beast with this post here. Anyway, if your entire punishment is to write this paper, just write the fricking paper, or are you that lazy and unaccustomed to accepting the consequences of your actions?
