Site suggestions/bugs

Like AtM, it's all about tabbed browsing :wink: Too awesome a feature to miss out on just to have people's names automatically appended to quotes and a few other tiny niggles ironed out. Tabs have changed the way I use the internet immensely - I find it such a chore to use IE for browsing these days. It's a fine browser if it's all you use or have used, but FF with its tabs and the additions of a few good plugins/extensions makes it a whole different world.

And Orph, you know fine well we don't go on about FF quite as much as you with the images :razz:

And you damned well better not because you would look silly doing so. When you have control over the situation and still bitch, it would and does look peculiar.

My wife is always beating me up because I constantly worry about things I have no control over. Its a weakness of mine that, I have no solution to.

Anyway, it always strikes me odd when people continue to cry over something they have a solution for. Even if its a solution they do not particularly like.

I use tabbed browsing in IE. The only real difference between them is Firefox tabs are on the top of the screen, and IE tabs are on the bottom of the screen (in an area called the "task bar" - check it out!)

Hey, I have a good suggestion:

The only way to return to the General Banter forum after posting is to travel up to the top of the page and click on the side bar or on the Forums/General Banter/Topic link. Can we get a link to the forums at the bottom? scrolling up is such a pain on a laptop.

I dont know actually, I dont post in (any) forums much, I always say to myself I should post in forums more, I seem to go through phases where I post heaps and then nothing for ages. Will try to post more! :smile:

SourDough2.0 - With Strawberry Jam

I'm using FF 1.0.7 and I've never had the smiley reply box. I have to switch over to IE to get a full list of the smileys.

I have java enabled in my preferences, and besides the reply bug its the only problem I'm having right now.

Here's a screenshot of my problem:

Anyone know a workaround or a solution (besides switching browsers)?

I've never seen it without IE either - just one of those quirks that Lep never got around to fixing I guess. After a while, all the important ones just become second nature anyways :wink:

Yeah, weird. Mine looks normal in mozilla 1.7.12 and Firefox 1.0.7 No issues. It's gotta be some of your settings, I'd imagine.

I saw this topic for "site suggestions" and a preview button immediately came to my mind. It's so often that you want to test out some more complicate stuff/bbcode and you have to submit the whole thing to see what it looks like.

site has problems with that version. So, go to the SnarkPit
control panel then go to the preferences and tick the box to minimize
java features. That should fix your problem, and it won't
eliminate too many useful features from the site.

Or if thats too much trouble you could just roll back to FF version 1.0.7

The computers that do it are all IE6 or less. You just have to click where you want the smileys to go and then click the smiley you want.

I have two chapters up in my map thread and everytime someone posts in
the intro chapter instead of the new alpha chapter I get worried that
they haven't seen my new shots.

I think the old chapters should be locked, or all the replies should automatically go to the most recent chapter.

Chapters with new posts in them are slightly bolder and a slightly different color yellow. In the last hour or so, you had a couple new replies in each chapter. I knew this because it was as I described. So I checked both.

If people are aware of these slight alterations, they will know to look in the individual chapters.

Chapters cannot be locked because in a few cases, the other chapters have a different intention and you'd effectively end the discussion in them.

Yeah, I know about how the chapters go bold when there are new posts in
them, its the same for a new page on a thread, but I wish people would
just confine there posts to my new chapter, since in the case of my map
the intro shots are much less developed.

I know that this has been mentioned before but:

I think critiques need more rewards than simple gratitude from the author. Yes thats important, but it might encourage others to do them more often.

In the editing help, we have the options "This is an answer to your problem" right?

Well we can post, "This is a critique to your map" and the author can mark it "Helpful" or "Not so"

Then the Snarkmark scores would go up, or not depending on the authors discretion.

I think this is a great idea. I enjoy giving feedback, but
there's no real way to quantify it right now. Do you think
there's absolutely any chance of Leperous coming back and implementing

Well, I've learned my lesson this time. No more chapters for me.

I didn't read any of the pages of this thread so don't be mad on me if I repeat something that was suggested. :wink:

1. Create a new suggestion thread, this one is way too long, and most people wont read through it all to see if something was suggested...ect

2. Every time I log in the main page it says I have a new message. But I don't have a new one for I read it already. It also says I have 6 PM but 2 of them I deleted. It doesn't remember anything I did in the other pages of this site but if I go to a diffrent page everything is back to normal.

Its unlikely Lep will begin a new page.

But in response to your issues. Try lowering your settings in your browser. Most of your problems I feel are cookie related since the items involved with the site "remembering" are contained there.

If anything, my browser marks things to early. I have the opposite problems you have.

I deleted your old news post from the admin page and modified your new one before accepting it. As far as I can see there is no other news post. I don't know whats happened if you can still see your previously submitted news posts, but I'm afraid there is nothing I can do :sad:

I noticed that jpegs are re-compressed automatically, resulting in pictures that are 1kb smaller in size and look three times as crumbly. I carefully choose the compression rate (keeping them around 50-70kb but always under 100) for my jpgs. It's like automatically zipping a zip file. I don't even see a pattern like "keep them under 50kb" which I would understand.

That's not really a problem I know, but I but I find it so annoying.

I know that the site automatically shrinks them in terms of their dimensions, which does hurt the quality, but if you keep images under 800x600 you can avoid that. It definitely does something to the image. I submit them as 800x600. Maybe it wants pictures to be below 800x600 so 800x600 gets re-saved as... 800x600. At some standard compression rate of 50% or so. It's definitely not the same file. I think it's a good idea to re-compress images above 100k but if you already edited them yourself to a good size it should keep the original.

Now I have problems with edit news post. It looks alright ("News edited successfully"), but on news page are still old no-edited post. I want to add link to released map's page ( http://www.snarkpit.net/maps.php?map=2257 ). Maybe admin could make this, or it's only need admin acceptation.

Yea, noticed the same thing. Quite annoying especially if you don't have the routine with these kind of things (and no preview I believe).

Lep implemented a program that if the images are stored on Snarkpit, its supposed to optimize them in some fashion. For some reason, some images slip through the cracks but on many occasions, the images are reduced to 800x600 and about 60-80k. I wish it worked full time but am unsure why it fails.

I never noticed a lowering of quality though. Most times its great. It could be that, the image is pre-optimized and doubling it only ruined the effort.

I have since noticed the auto-compression thing, and it is a horrible abomination! I uploaded pictures of my flatshaded island for HL1 as for ages I had pictures of the old version up. Anyway, the images were 800x600 and perfectly acceptable file size, yet the snarkpit automatically recompressed them and they came out looking horrible. It didn't even reduce the file size by all that much, it just ruined the image quality. That is a feature that really needs to be changed - either it should go, or it should only recompress screenshots that are unacceptably large.

Its a crying ass shame that someone has to baby sit supposedly responsible people.

The program has issues but, did you try uploading it upoptimized to test its capability on its own?

As I said, double optimizing may be the wrong direction.

If people would simply follow all the guidelines/warnings posted there would be no need to babysit. :rolleyes:

I'm glad the JPG compression issue was confirmed. I think it's ok to babysit people if it means less stress for everyone else. The thing is it would be a real great feature if it only recompressed 100k+ (or another size, it should just be mentioned somewhere) JPGs. But it applies it to every image, even a 30k one. It's inefficient and annoying which is a bit too much - worth changing for a next update.

Are you sure its every image? I've seen plenty that don't seem to have gone through the compression thing, yet others obviously have. Its strange - I don't quite know what qualifies an image for the compression

I'm sure this message will never reach anyone with any sort of say as to what happens to the site, but:

I was thinking about this (just a moment ago) ... I'm curious how many email accounts registered on this site get spammed because of the "mailto" functionality!

I'd suggest, at some point, an authentication (through the database) so that if you click "send an email" it'll work, but spamming programs would have much more difficulty.

As it stands, all they have to do is search for the "mailto" tag ... then read in until they have reached a space or quote. Fairly simple and incredibly annoying! I think something like this may become an issue with the amount of traffic this site has and the availability it has to search engines. (Automating a program to do this through google, for example, is not difficult.)

... and then read backwards? It doesn't work that way. You'd search for mailto, ignore it, ignore the colon, then read in until you reach a quote.

Starting in the middle of the string doesn't make any sense. Also, remember that it isn't a person sitting down and doing this.

Also, just to note, just because there's an at sign, doesn't guarantee that there is an email address. mailto, does. Since a valid email was required to register at the site. Meaning, there is some syntax checking going on to ensure it's a valid email address.

The way people type on the Internet is strange enough. Anyway, it's very easy to get this information from a mailto argument in an link tag. There are many more advanced spamming programs out there. Didn't you ever wonder why you have to type in words from a odd looking picture when registering somewhere? Even that isn't foolproof. I don't think it's that huge of a deal, but it is something to take into consideration, especially considering the size of this site. (and again, it is very easy to track down using google)

Are we ever going to get a spoiler tag? It's trivial, but, making something black text doesn't work for people using the lighter themes. (Obviously, spoiler tag should make the text whatever color the background is. OR, even better, is to make it black, then have a surrounding black box highlight. So, no matter what (even quoting) would make it unreadable until it is highlighted by the mouse.

Yea, there should be a proper black on black spoiler tag. I'm an example for people actually using the white theme (I love the white theme).

I just wondered why people start writing their emails like "homer.j at hotmail.com" instead of the wohle thing. A search program could look for spaces and pick text with an @ in the middle. I mean thos search bots do crazy things from what I heared.

I'm not a programmer, of course. And it doesn't make your mail tag argument less valid. :smile:

I vote that we change the code not to say "forums" anymore... The plural of forum is fora.
