'"please update map details"- you have a map still in beta status that you haven't updated for a while'

I'm getting this message in my control panel about a map I only added today.

An option to clear sent messages would be nice, although I'm not quite sure why...

I'm thinking the "random map" feature people suggested ages ago is worth considering, though I'm not sure where it could go on the current layout. It would just be nice to have a thumbnail of a map displayed somewhere everyone passes (such as the news page), I think it would attract people's attention to maps more often. I guess below/above all the current sidebar stuff on the news page would be a good place. Just have a thumbnail of a hosted image and then "Blah by Blahblah" underneath.

Obviously to get the thumbnail thing working your would need to ensure the maps shown would only be those with images uploaded to the profile.

wouldn't it be easier to just add the first thumbnail from the map in the side bar on the last two addition which would then be a link to the screen shots of the map?

Or maybe (so the site doesn't run slower then it already does from half way accross the world) just have the screenshot logo that is shown if there is no thumbnail next to each map name which is just a direct link to the screens.

Just keep in mind, when this site resizes images, it isn't exactly smooth and slapping that on the main page would certainly be annoying if it slowed it down.

I suppose a solution to that would be the map submitter would upload a small thumbnail (no more then 15k) for that image, otherwise use the imageicon thing I mentioned earlier.

Crono, thumbnails are actually generated and saved thumbnails, they don't 'slow the site down' at all. I guess a random map could go under the 'new maps' list or something...

TBH, to address the people who propose the new spinko changes to the map display system, good ideas - but surely these changes will be more or less redundant until Half-Life 2 is here?

There just isn't a steady output of quality in the Half-Life mapping scene for these changes to be implemented, yet
/2 cents

If you try to list all the members with usernames starting with a certain letter it shows the amount of people but doesn't list them.

I didn't even think to suggest it but its a nice thing to have. Another little suggestion, would it be possible to have map screenshots shown when you reply to a map thread? I often find myself flicking between 2 windows, one with the map thread and one with my reply, so I can change screenshot and things. Would be nice to put them on the reply page if possible.

I can't make new lines for some reason. For example, I'll try and make one right here...

And has it worked? No  It shows as a new line when I'm making the reply, just not once posted. When I edit the post it also shows up fine. Havent a clue whats wrong, never had problems with it before

Yeah, quick reply  Why the character limt though? (char counter doesn't work in mozilla)

New lines work for me (I think)

Another suggestion, could the thread history when you make a new post be in an iframe? I'm not sure how other people feel about this, but to me it seems like a good idea to be able to read the posts you are replying to without scrolling down. Perhaps this could be an option? The standard/condensed buttons at the bottom of the page could go below quickreply to perhaps look neater? Also, how about a drop down box 'jump to forum' at the bottom of each thread page - We used to have this, but it disappeared? I remember complaining about it not working in mozilla  If you use ' onchange="this.form.submit()" ', it will work with mozilla.

[edit] oh, maybe newlines don't work. doh. [/edit]

ReNo, I got the same problem. You need to use a "p" tag (you know, in html) to start a new paragraph. I have a feeling it's a Mozilla thing.

Any reasons against substituting the reply button in pm's for a quick reply type box underneath?

edit: No it's not from laziness, it just might be a little less fiddley. Yes, fiddly.

That was decided against because of possible abuse/misuse. However, if Lep decided to introduce different levels for members he could give selected people the power to mass message. Another option would be to limit it to about 10 or 15 people.

so, we should punish all on a what if...

alrighty then.

we already have block ability.. that would effectively end all abuse after the 1st cases..

except leps fine ability to IP block..

he could also create a work-in-progress name blocking system..

no names with questionable content.. IE puss,c**k,ass, etc, etc

the database would require some effort initially, but in a few months i bet you could get most combinations blocked..

if by chance, someone insists on using a word thats blocked, he could send a message to lep for authorization..

just a thought..

Like it says, I can delete people faster than they can register, so although IP blocking is fun it's more the account-deleting that deters people. Andddd ok about the PM reply gubbins, but that'll have to wait a few weeks, exams :/

its obvious, snarkpit keeps up with "times viewed" on pages..
how do we, as members see how many times things been viewed, IE tutorials, and reviews?

i am kinda curious, which tuts get the most use, and why.

i have been thinking of another set of stats as well.. one that sets distinctions..
say we divide the member board into categories..
1-10 votes=?
11-20 votes=?
21-30 votes=?
in this way, someone with a 4/5 score by 9 people will not outrank someone with a 3.9 by 21 votes..
personally i like a ranking system.. i can see where some wouldn't but thats sad IMO.. one shouldn't hide their stats, even admin.
some members however are bad enuff i can see why they would hide theirs

anyways, just a thought.

Hmm, Orph you and a few others love their stats and ratings and whatnot don't you  I don't really like comparing people that much and don't see the need, the ratings system is there for snarkmarks and for newer members to see if they should ignore someone or not, really.

if, we had another outlet for distinction, i would forego the stat system, presently its our only way to set oneself apart.
i have the most votes, in its way an honor, but it is also bad IMO cause it could be viewed as "Most annoying" .. who else creates enuff chaos to get people to rank him
i would much rather be known for more positive contributions.. as in critiques, reviews, and tutorials.. these are what editing is about, our primary reason for being here at the pit..

you make it sound like i like a rather large percentage of the pit ranking me poorly.. yeah i know, more have ranked me high, but with my ego, any poor marks rankle, especially when people do it on a whim, but never return to change the score, once the reason has been resolved.

anywho's, i rather dislike the current ranking system, it relies on the person voting to be unbiased.. something even i am guilty of.

[edit] that was a 2 part post lep, is it easier for you if we seperate them?

suggestion:
since its all in the scroll anyways, can we have a message window about 3 times the size we currently have in the quick reply?

many messages exceed the current dimensions, but few would exceed one 3 times the depth..

Lep, sometimes when using the quick reply box I click submit and the little blue progress bar shows up in bottom of the screen and sticks. Once I hit refresh my post is there though. Not too sure why this happens, since it only happens ever couple of times. Might just be my crappy browser.

When I go to upload files to my homepage, I get this happening - its all compacted to a little frame on the right hand side of the page. It happens everytime using Firefox, but IE seems to be fine.

re-enable Javascript posting
