I really really want to see this, although it's 'inspired' by rather than based on Asimov's book (i.e. no psychic robot, unless that's the plot twist). Earth 'losing' is a bit early for the series anyway isn't it :smile:

I saw the trailer a while back, looked odd and I didn't see any robot action or anything.

Well, there's been a full trailer out for a while now with robot action, and it gives away the plot that, surprise surprise, the robots turn against their human masters.

And we wonder why people are anti-GM/nanotech/whatever sometimes

I think people will only be against nanotech until it becomes really good, at which point they will love it. How many people can you see trying to ban nanotech when there's some nano-uberbot that can cure aids and cancer...

Conversely, how many people can you see trying to ban it when there's some nano-uberbot that can liquify a person based on their DNA, eh :razz:

When I get my small compensation s**tty amount from the UK govt for my YEAR WASTED OF MY LIFE! cause, I intend to invest in nanotechnology shares, to the tune of a few thousand pounds, hopefully...

My friend bought some nanotechnology shares. Two weeks later he went completely bald and got scurvy. Nanotechnology is bad news.

I once got scurvy, became really ill after drinking 3 pints of orange juice and my gums hurt like s**t, was fine after a couple of days though, the vitamin c settled in and gave me the s**ts

surely scurvy is a lack of fruit juice/vitamin c ? hence sailors used to get it on long haul journeys where fresh fruit wasnt available ? methinks myrk is just a big scrubber :razz:

Naah, I didn't mean it seriously chief.. I do hope to invest, but can't seem to find good/reliable articles/info on the prospects of nanotechnology - but it is a big buzz word atm... I figure the tech heads on here might know bits and bobs :smile:

Sorry I kind of missed out some facts from my story. I hadn't eaten any vegetables or vitmin C for several weeks before, so when I did have OJ the acid kinda burnt and I became I'll because of the sudden intake of vitamins.

What's the point in creating a movie based on robots when the robots look like crappy stick figures molded from IMacs?

The book was good, but it will be interesting to see how it translates to a movie. Hopefully at least as well as A.I. or Bicentennial Man, if not better...

Nanotech is my area of specialization and interest. that said however keep in mind that this is a very broad topic which goes very deep. I may not be the most authoritative source.

I don't recommend investing in any "nanotech" firms atm. The field is very young, and while it is good to get in early, it will be very hard to pic the winers form the losers this early in the game. To be honest, nanotechnology is over hyped like nothing I have ever encountered. there are incredible possibilities but most of them only exist in the minds of scientists. Nanotech truly is the realm of basic research at present. as such you can't expect to see any radical new commercial products for at least another 15-20 years. there are nanotech products on the market, but for the most part they are mundane things like better sun screens made from titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Probably the first place you will really notice the impact of nanotech is in the computer industry.

As far as investing goes, I recommend an index fund, as they typically out perform almost anything else. However, if you find a company that has a product you truly believe in and has the organizational strength to be successfully, go for it!

I dislike Asimov, Will Smith is not nearly enough of a draw by himself, and the trailer was rather blah. I don't think I'm looking forward to any movies this year, as there's no LOTR movie waiting for me as a Christmas present. :sad:

I'd agree with Tracer, there's not really any companies worth investing in just yet. I guess when the technology comes out, medical applications will be the Big Ones to plow your money into- I think the first stuff we'll see are 'nanokits' and disease monitors and the like, not actual bots that do anything...

both of those movies were mediocre at best, yet it seems they are all you people can talk about :sad:

and will smith?? he is one of the best actors i have seen in ages.. didn't like him in that stupid sitcom, but i don't like sitcom's so its prolly not his fault.

this story is decades old, and way past due for a movie version... i would have preferred they did the foundation books first, but i will settle for what i can get.

if you hadn't guessed yet, i disliked LOTR, and have gone way past my limit on how many threads i can endure containing references to the movie :/

i concur, i know many who don't think he is all that great, but seriously, every damned day, someone mentions those two movies.. will smith is just a passing thought around here, a foot note at best.

This movie looks awesome. I worked extensively with Alan Tudyk during firefly, he's a real genuine guy. With that in mind I would go see the movie regaurdless. Will Smith?, I have no real problems with him, save for his choices in movie roles. (Can you say Wild Wild west?, come on, not only was it a bad idea to make the US's top secret service agent black, but the whole premise was just stoooopid, like a cartoon with real people. MIBII?,BAD BOYS II????????). He's not a character actor, He's Will Smith in different clothes/scenarios. If the vehichle is right then he's OK.

I enjoyed the action scenes in bad boys II, some cool stuff. Martin Lawrence constantly whining was a bit annoying though. :smile:

It's "Riddick" - not being a pratt, just incase you go looking for it online or whatever :smile:

I quite enjoyed Pitch Black, which is the film that introduces you to the character Riddick, and apparently the game is shaping up to be one of the best movie tie ins ever seen. I'm not a big fan of Vin Diesel but I might give it a looksee in the future :smile:

I'm sure the book it's based off of is good. But this movie looks like s**t.
Will Smith can't pull a decent delivery from the fanciest crevice in his body.
The story looks fine, just the acting looks terrible.

Secondly, Robots of any kind would turn only if they were made to. And if we DID create technology for them to become 'self-aware' or some crazy nonsense like that, we'll all be dead by then. We're not too far on the robot front, at least nothing near something like an android or something. (Plus it'd be too expensive)

Some good movies out or coming out that will at least be entertaining:

Orph, the movies are a pretty good adaptation from the books (which is why I like them) ... if you didn't like the books or something I can see how you wouldn't like the movies ... but ... they're good. So was the Matrix trilogy, I'm sick of people bashing it because they have a chip on their shoulder from the shoddy editing in Reloaded.

The Chronicles of Riddick looks like s**t. I hate Vin Diesel. I hated Pitch Black. It did TERRIBLY, so what do they do? Make a sequel (as in another movie, not really post story).

It's fine if you liked or disliked any of these movies, these are just things I'm looking forward to. :smile:

crono, you will notice, i bash far fewer things than people do me..
i like the movies i like, i base that on no ones opinion save my own.. will smith is a good actor, not great, but good.. he doesn't bring a movie down just cause he is in it, but he makes it no better either.
his sense of humor reflects my own, much like jim carey does.. i like basic crude humor, and he excels at it.. MiB was great. i have literally watched it dozens of times.. same with wild,wild west..

books into movies are only good if you watch the movie first.. reading it first will always ruin it IMO cause books are so much better.

comics into movies always rock.. especially if its marvel :biggrin:

OK,so this movie is about a robot, being charged with homocide? The trailer makes it seem a little bit,erm, iffy?

The movie will probably be nothing like the book, except the main female character's name is the same, as is the title. There was little violent action in the book, no gunfights, no major robot revolutions overthrowing their human masters (well, at least not on Earth) - in short, they took a book full of mostly peaceful stories about robots, dropped in Will Smith, and made a guns-blazing robot-smashing action movie.
Not that that's bad, but it would've been nicer if they could have changed the name.

the show was ok yak, it just wasn't as big as people say IMO..

still i loved the original "Dune" when many did not.. i love "Harry Potter".. i just don't like tolkien, his style of writing is not my cup of tea.

I've read tons of books before movies were even considered and the movies still kicked ass.
The first Jurassic Park was awesome, and it was rather close to the book. I, unlike a lot of people (not anyone specific), will recognize a good movie when I see one, even if it is far from a good adaptation.

I watched The Lost World before I read the book ... I thought it was s**t before I read the book and then after I read the book I got pissed off. :smile:

I think the problem with DC (and other comic distributors) is that they're locations aren't real.

You can't go to Gotham or Metropolis.
That doesn't go to say however, that I don't like Batman, Superman, GL as characters or anything like that.
Because these characters have very nice story lines once in the right hands (Frank Miller's Batman, if you do not know what this is like read the arc/trade "The Dark Knight Returns".).

That and their costumes seemed a little too 'bright' (like superman ... yikes).

The idea of Superman being a goodie goodie always rubbed me the wrong way, since even though he's from Krypton, he grew up on Earth. He would act like a human. Something they only went into in very rare arcs of the comics.

However, Batman kicks ass. I can't wait for Batman Begins. Good Director, good writer, good cast, good story ... :biggrin:
(I remember how excited I was when I saw the short Sandy Corolla film "Dead End" ... besides the new movie coming out; it has been the best live action adaptation of the Dark Knight to date)

I thought the two Tim Burton Batman movies were great comic films; Jack Nicholson was great in the first one. Not as much can be said for the last two (or that one from the '60s).

"Batman" kicked ass. "Returns" was good.
I don't recognize the last two as Batman movies... I actually remember the theater I saw "Batman and Robin" in more then the crapfest its-self.

The "Begins" WILL kick major ass.
I'll try to find a link to "Dead End" so you all will see the badass-ness of the Dark Knight (and some extra characters :biggrin: ).

As for the first two Batman films, they're good films ... but okay adaptations.

I think Mark Hamil would make a better Joker (even though he's not a better actor then Nicholson) ... not just because he does the voice (perfectly) but he looks like the Joker ... seriously, imagine him with white skin and green hair....goose bumps.

But that would destroy continuity in the film franchise ... so they would need to make him a copycat killer or some crap.

Actually, Spider-Man probably has the closest adaptation of any comic book movie. But ... since the comic is cheesy as hell, the movie is too. But it's still good :smile:

DC doesn't "suck", I didn't say that. I said that their characters aren't put in the right hands.

Think how bad ass Superman would be if he acted human? It'd be great.

After Blade and X-Men were made, production companies realized that you don't have to sacrifice quality for money.

They also realized that people will flock to see these movies no matter how good or bad they are, so you might as well make them good.

I believe when "Forever" and "Batman and Robin" was made WB producers had almost all the say in the story and feel (and it shows).

Also, Blade is the BEST change in adaptation ... that comic blew ass chunks ...

you shouldn't makes such positive sounding comments crono, the list of books to movie failures out number the successes i am afraid.. at least leave some room for openness as in my comment "IMO"

i have seen a few successful movies from books, but they still fall way short of the books.. i am afraid my imagination far exceeds the pocketbook of many movie makers.. the special effects are much sharper, with no dark scenes in my noggin :heee:

i just feel, if you wanna truly enjoy the movie, watch it before reading the book.. case in point "jaws" the book made me wet myself, the movie... blah
