I've been playing Far Cry and Battlefield Vietnam lately, since the half life MP has basically passed me by (Hey! I gave it almost 6 years!) and I've noticed that people are not very friendly in these games. In fact a great many of them are just downright rude, crude, selfish, and trashy. Whatever happened to the days when people knew each other in servers?. When you talked about the latest stuff whilst fragging? I could suppose that this may be a result of my playing in larger public servers, as opposed to the more privately run games, but now adays, the gamning engines are so intense, that your average Joe cant run a server and play in it at the same time. I've met less than a handful of seemingly friendly people in the past weeks of intensive gaming. I miss the Diner, Globalassault, and you know family type servers where everybody knew each other. I hope to find a more friendly gaming community once HL2 comes out. I imagine I'll see lots of old friends in there. (I hope so anyways).
Anybody have the same experience with on-line gaming lately?

Everyone from here will probably play HL2 together, so you won't be
alone then. I agreewith you about a large number of gamers being
immature idiots. Their numbers probably seem to be greater because they
are the loudest though.

The friendly people of HL are still playing HL
I've found, most often, individuals who bust in blabing their mouths off at people with their mics (which them of all people shouldn't have) are proud CSers. Not saying CS is bad. But, with it being the 'pop mod' it brings in many people who're immature and undesierable to play with.
I'm certainly not saying all people who play CS are morons. But a big number of them are not very enjoyable.
Those type of people exist everywhere, of course. But, If you play some dod you usually meet up with some very friendly people, or at least they're polite.
I'm not sure why this 'phenomina' happens. But it does.
As far as Battlefield goes, I don't think I've actually played it online.
Far Cry probably just attracts the "I only love my graphics" gamers.
All in all, don't sweat it Juim, man

indeed, one's balls are bigger than the other because of the wide gap of internet means that they can act big and no body can physicaly enforce. I wish there was a punching portal where when someone gets out of line you can knock them in the face through the portal and set things straight.

When I play CS people on the servers are quite friendly, like when someone gets a headshot with a scout or something, then they'll prolly say 'nice one' or something.

The only place I've found good people to play an online game with consistantly has been with Neverwinter Nights. I've only ever come across one slight jerk, the rest were insanely nice people. Dungeon Siege was a slight step down but still good, while FPS games are usually a joke and I don't both conversing much unless there are a handful of fellow mappers in there I know or a known friend.

It depends on the time you play. At 10 AM In the morning, a CS server
is crowded with 12 year old brats that are constantly going like "ph44r
my AWP sk!illz !" and "n00b !" and "*I'm going to do something to your
mother*".
At 10 PM, things are much better ... it looks like everyone
concentrates on the game and the only thing you read is "nice one" or
"good shot".

People are just idiots and there's nothing you can do about it. It's probably just best to find a good stable server, play it a bunch, and get to know the regulars. I had a couple of TFC, HLDM, and CS servers that I always played and it was tons of fun when everyone knew everyone else (especially when you could pull off beautiful shots and not get accused of cheating).
I've also found that making fun of the idiots makes games fun if the people are mostly assholes. When the morons start getting mouthy, you just go and beat them down repeatedly, round after round, game after game until they shut up. There's nothing more satisfying than imagining some poor sucker extremely pissed off yelling at his screen about "that f**ker Yak_Fighter killed me again!!"

Hahaha, pwned.nl RULES! The perfect example of a situation we all know too well. Seriously though, if you'd go crazy at the loss of your comp, please shoot yourself now.

also, I hate when they start to spray pr0n on the walls ... half of
your team just stands there doing obscene player moves, and the game
is b0rked.

The thing I hate the most in online gaming today is the use of the word 'nub'. You look retarded enough calling people who've owned the game since day one newbies, but then you compound it by calling them nubs instead of n00bs. Gah! At least use a semi-correct word!

<DIV>Agreed, Yak.</DIV>
<DIV>I've just come back from an awesome CS game on GameArena. There were a few obvious hacks to start (a guy was floating in the roof), but once we asked them to turn them off, they complied, and the game was awesome. Plenty of nice comments and such.</DIV>
<DIV>Nice to know that there's still some good pub server players out there.</DIV>

I've only recently got back into playing some online games, in UT2004 and HLDM. I find both of these are filled with mostly alright people, with most of the UT servers I've played in being full of people who will compliment you on playing well or pulling off good moves. HLDM has also been pretty good for me, though I've only really been playing in 24/7 Gasworks and (where there has only been one mouthy annoyance) Yaxxbarl's Lament (which had a couple of foreign people arguing, but me and some others were having a good time and close matches).
That said, I did play DoD for a while, and due to the limitations on how many people can go each class, some "good" players get bitchy if a newcomer is taking up good classes. For instance, I know I'm a reasonable shot in FPS's, and can handle the DoD sniper rifles fine, but not knowing the maps meant I wasn't making good use of the class. People were shouting over the mic calling me lame just because I wasn't camping the right spots. This wasn't a one off either, its happened on more than one occasion. All in all I've not been hugely impressed with the DoD community, not seen much in the way of friendly comments, its mostly bitching if anything.

Depends mostly on the server ReNo, although there's been a sharp
increase in lamers on DOD recently. Try playing on the MDK server;
80.168.35.20:27025. It's empty atm, but fills up from about 5pm onwards
til the wee hours of the morning.

I haven't been able to play online too well for quite a while now (I used to be able to play HL fine with my 56k modem until they put in their 'improved' net code!).
Get my 150k broadband connection (not the fastest by any means but all I can afford atm), which should hopefully get me back up to speed a little bit.
My past experience of online play though was that in general, HL players were friendly, UT players were neither here nor there as no-one ever chatted at all, and Q3 players were just plain nasty.

Yeah ... DoD has ups and downs ... like massive TKers. It happens every once in awhile where some guy will think its hilarious to sit at his own teams spawn and kill you when you spawn.
There's been a few times where this has happened and when I killed the guy back, I got kicked.
Also, DoD has some ... problems. When people are far away they're encased in black, they look like a silhouette. The only way to tell (fast) is if the flag pops up over their head, they're on your team. Well, most times it pops up too late. You shoot the guy, you see what you did, and you apologize. Most times (if you're doing well) they'll accept your apology and wait until you've spawned or something and hurt you or something like that. But, there are a lot of people who just freak out about it and hunt you down, round after round, shooting you going "oops sorry". Which is obviously immature and annoying as well as unfair since you're obviously not TKing on purpose (Usually its just like one.)

I haven't been able to play dod in along while so I haven't really
played any online games but the one I have seen the nicest people in
are DoD and Ultima Online I met some really friendly people on there
but there was also the idiots but thankfully they weren't as bad as
those that play CS.

God- Mic spamming is the worst thing since ever... I was playing in some random CS server with some friends, and during one round it was me and one other guy on my team versus one terrorist. My teammate gets this idea to blast this INTENSELY ANNOYING HEAVY BASS techno pissas**t song. I couldn't hear the terrorist shooting me, it was that loud. Not to mention my ping spiked up to about 400. Oh, I was pissed. The annoying thing was, the admin was in the server at the time and was actually encouraging this bastard to do it. /rage

I have a mic, and use it sometimes, only to say from which direction the ct/t's are coming from, and some stuff like nice one etc. Not to blast heavy metal through the server though.

I've found most online experiences not requiring a lot of teamplay to be pretty entertaining. I often read what people chat but I totally ignore any voice commands (I tell people to type if they have something to tell me, since usually I can't understand them anyway) and I rarely say anything back. The worst players I've seen are on Diablo II, just about everyone there calls each other "nubs", player kills for no reason, can't spell, steal items / experience, and ask for "frees" all the time. CS, UT and other teamplay first person shooters tend to be okay with me since I just make sure I'm killing the right color enemies in the right areas on the minimap, and hope for the best.
