Dunno if anyone cares, but here's a great write-up of Halo's performance on the PC thanks to the one and only Zoner. http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=8846686

most of that made sense, even to my stupid ass.. but i have to ask, why would anyone design a game from the getgo, with a 30fps cap? is it because it was designed for T.V. sets?

anyways, was a good read.

It probably reduces the number of calculations you have to do if you know the framerate will never be over a certain amount. I expect animations are somehow framerate dependant, and that if the framerate was alllowed to go to say 100fps, all the animations would go fast and screw up. Maybe the physics engine only goes at 30fps, and so anything above that will make the physics look jerky.

Complete guesses without rtfa btw

if i recall, T.V. sets run at like 24 frames per themselves, maybe 30 is overkill.. i mean, the article said, you could drop to 15 in a firefight, thats a 15 point drop from 30.. but if they capped it at 24 that would put a fight at 9fps.. sounds possible i suppose.

At a guess, I'd say 30fps was to fit in nicely with the US/Asian tv standards. NTSC M has a vertical frequency of 60Hz. The 2:1 ratio looks too neat to be a coincidence. Or maybe it is, and I just waffle too much.

I believe that the NTSC standard is 29.5 FPS.

Boy I am so sympathetic to gearbox's plight now.

I quit computer science two years ago so I don't really know what it takes to code something this big, but it sure would seem to be like they could have ported it properly if they really wanted to instead of doing a half assed job of it. ...oh, recodings going to be hard... oh well screw it, let's just ship it as is and then defend our actions on internet message boards. People will understand!
