I want to make a button to shut and lock a door. I've searched
the forums and tutorials, and everything says to make a func_button,
but whenever i try to do that the entity thing creates a
func_ladderendpoint instead. i can't find anyone who actually
describes HOW to make a func_button. can anyone help me?

First make a trigger brush where you want the button and tie it to an entity. Then hit ALT+enter (will bring up properties screen) and search for func_button in the drop box.

make a brush that will serve as your button, press ctrl+T and select func_button.
The settings are easy to figure out, just remeber to set the dont move flag.
Now make your door, name it door1.
now go back to the button and set up two outputs.
on press ----(trigger)---> door1 -----> close
on press ----(trigger)---> door1 -----> lock ---(delay)---> 2

Theres a dropdown list on entities you do realise? Geeze use your head! Mapping isn't just about learning from others, its about self tuition and logic, and dedication (at least some).

func_button isn't in the drop-down list of entities. i checked.
jeez use your head, mapping isn't just about criticizing others before
you get your facts straight.

it's not in the list of point entities, but no-one said it was. try actually following the advice that people give you, instead of bitching at them. myrk plays drums and listens to heavy metal, so we don't expect him to be civilized.

(i see we have to go into full detail to explain things...) make a brush that you want your button to be. right click on it in one of the 2d views and select 'tie to entity' a menu should come up. in that menu youll find a drop down selection. in there fine 'func_button' and select it then set the nesscarry settings and make the door and the I/O commands as our drglass kindly provided above and your set! easy as pie!

it wasn't a threat, more of a note that its pointless to complain about people wanting help in their own forum they posted in order to get help. It
was meant to be a point, not a threat, because yes, you are right, that
would be a pointless threat. any internet threat is pointless
anyhow, what am i gonna do? e-kick people? haha. thanks again for
the help, but give me some credit, i may be new to mapping, but i'm not
stupid. :razz:

my post was originally worse, because i hadn't realised that you were paraphrasing myrk. i still intended it to refer you back to previous posts though, one of which you have now marked as the right answer. it appeared less offensive then than it does now, but that's possibly due to my comparing it with the first draught. :razz:
a good tip for someone as new to the editor as you seem to be, would be to have a right good read at the hammer docs, with shortcut keys being a main focus of your attention. the explainations of the keys give you a wealth of info in relation to what can be done in the editor (and may save you a little time with mouse clicks).

none of this s**t is very user friendly at all. Worldcraft sucked too. Noone should ever feel bad for finding themselves lost, frustrated, or even downright suicidal after trying to make a map. even the simple explanations some of us give as answers aren't really all that simple at all. just because we understand something completely doesn't mean we have any talent at all in teaching it. a lot of the answers I read require even more answers to all of the stuff the teacher took for granted that I'd know.
I long for the day when there is a program for mapping that works easily and correctly and actually has a comprehensive manual to read with it

Thanks! I appreciate everything except the whole, "Valve doesn't owe me anything" bit. That comment has made me even more retarded as it sank in. Considering I have bought Valve's products, had to pay for mods that used to be free, recieved near zero support from steam, had to use steam to begin with, and am required to know where documentation exists because the help files that come with it are weak, and the usual crashes, bugs, etc - I feel like they owe me quite a bit. I expect a full reimbursement by you since you seem to be their PR man. A blank check wil suffice. Thanks again.
*as I open all of your links I see that I already have every last one of them saved, so I guess I did know where (I should say HOW) to look

I could go into products of theirs that I bought and did not get them to even work. I had the original DOD on this computer and it played fine. Then one day I change to a new Steam account (meaning I bought, yet another HL key) and then found I must now pay to have DOD again. Well, thanks to one of my buddies pestering me I bought the p.o.s. game and it would no longer run on my machine without crashing. So what did support do for me ? They gave me a dozen different instructions in a list I like to call, "Your next 3 days homework" and I proceeded to do bury myself in PC Geek activities . Three days later they finally refunded my money (but not my time and frustration - and lemme tell ya what $10 could get you in the kind of computer geek work I was involved in over this) and told me it was a one-time refund to show how nice they are. I would have just bought DOD source but why gamble and have to go through all of that horses**t again? The game played on my machine before, it's a crummy little HL mod, for Pete's sake I run BF2, CoH, WoW, CS:S, you name it on this PC.
And that's just ONE story. I am required to have Steam to even play my games so in a sense I bought that p.o.s. too and I don't even have room to even BEGIN to get started with stories of my so called, "support" with that.
I am still here enjoying Valve products and I will be paying for TFC when they release it and I will continue to obsess over mapping, gaming, servering and I will continue to be highly pissed and bitch about a lot of it even if some fanboi thinks he's earning Valve Miles when the great Valve God reads his posts defending the bastards.
