They give exactly 50 MB, with a lot of options (traffic monitoring, etc..) But there are sites who give 100 MB and more, but with a less elegant adress (Freewebz, ...)

Yahoo has a file host system that used to allow up to 15 meg files. Perhaps thats an option?

I meant that to read, 15 meg chunks. I think you had 50 or 100 megs total.. Might pay to check on the site.

For screenshots there are a lot of free image hosting sites on the net. imageshack.us (my personal favorite), photobucket.com, etc.

For other files you might want to check and see if you actually have some hosting you dont know about. For example, colleges and ISP's often throw in some webspace that you might not know about.

There is either a heck of a lot of hostility, or a heck of a lot of insiders joking at this site. I hope I can sort out which it is before I step on someones toes and be on the receiving end of some.

Any members in particular that I should avoid, or better, buddy up with?

I want to learn mapping not spend all my limited on line time staving off blows.

I am so happy, I made a box with a light in it today. I really walked around inside something I made.

Great feeling isn't it?

As for which toes to avoid? Well like all forums, our members have
their own traits, for better and worse. General advice would be not to
ignore or get angry at people for giving you honest feedback on your
work - most of use pride ourselves on our honesty in this regard. Some
people are better at coating the honest feedback in sugar than others,
but always accept the feedback, no matter how harsh, and use it to
improve.

yes, a good feeling.

I do believe that a level of honesty is best, but some of the honesty I have been reading is pure sniping and general low level attacking. Some of it to people who have been here a long time judging by their membership roster.

I have been here a while just reading. I didn't really like what I was seeing. It was my interest in mapping that finally boosted my confidence enough to become verbal.

Check some of the most recent comments in the maps from the front page. (specifically some that just slid off the page)

I saw a four year veteran attacked by two members from quite recently for giving an honest opinion. I almost said no way again.

Anyway, I am glad you took a moment to clue me in. I hope to get some favorable feedback, positive and negatively expressed alike.

I feel once I establish what is humour and what is actually funny then I will be OK.

One persons humour, may be another persons shame. Some love to be shameful and hide behind humour in doing so.

Funny is universal. Everyone understands it. It may not be funny to them, but when there is no other underlying motive it is still considered funny.

I see so far, to little funny and a lot of shameful humour.

I have read some truly professional tutorials the past few days. Its a shame the people and their humour cannot use the same level of people skills with their wit.

I have noticed though, the tutorials are not truly basic. Not my level of basic but perhaps I am reading them in the wrong sequence. Is there an order in which to do so?

Theres no defined order... if the tutorials are a bit ahead of you, it just means youll learn more by following them.

Try not to worry about some of the members here... what often seems like pointless flaming, usually isnt. Also bear in mind who its directed at, there have been lots of nasty posts in that mod recruiting topic, but if youre starting a mod and cant take criticisms you shouldnt be starting a mod yet. New members can easily come under attack by overreacting to the older members opinions and suggestions, and can often retaliate (see any mod recruitment thread). As long as you can take honest criticism, youll do fine here.

Just as in real life, some people here have an aggressive way of
telling their opinion. It's their personality (which can add charisma)
and they arent worse for that, you just have to know how to take their
comments. Add that with the fact that written language can't give
subtle underlying nuances etc and you can easily feel hostility. Just
as irl, the trick is to relativise.

This is a good example of a discussion where you can have the feeling "let it go" and pass on Most ppl here are really nice, but they may seem overpowered by the few big guns.

It looks hostile because of the black background, and the very agressive avatar of the founder (Mr. Leperous): I've always recommended using some pink, or maybe some animated cartoon style banners...

But even if it looks vicious, this place is actually very warm and welcoming ; Enjoy your stay, but if I were you, I'd avoid upsetting a member who calls himself "Orpheus": he's like some kind of big guru in here, and all I can say is just... avoid pissing off the guy.

You guys keep talking about this Orpheous guy. Funny thing is, he was the veteran that got tanked so badly by the new member I mentioned earlier. If he is what you say, why did no one bother assisting him? Worse, why did he need assisting?

I don't about how you define humour, but I do like the idea of straight honest feedback. I hope to receive some on any misadventures I take in creating a map. If you guys can be honest, then I suppose I can deal with your absurd sense of humour.

Anyway, we seem to have drifted a fair portion from the topics heading. I suppose the humour discussion has about run its course. Back to free hosting gents?

Weird? because I d not think making fun of someone is humour, or because I do not think baiting someone in the guise of humour is funny?

Well, I can live with weird if you can I suppose. Could be worse, and it may get that way before to long.

what they mean underdog is that you are different to the rest of us and i personnally perfer your way of conversing, its a lot nicer and considerate. compared to the few f**kheads that have joined recently. your little 'weirdness' is a very nice change.

like for example your last post could have turned into a heated argument that spiraled out of control (cough cough hence "Desperate Need of a Programmer!" cough cough) but it didnt you ended the ingriedents that could have potentially made such a thing with saying 'well, i can live with weird...' and that was a very nice thing to do.

so thanks underdog for not following the downward path the few noob idiots follow.

i agree. like i said in my last post; relativise, take a chill pill when someone lurks you toward that downward path.

and i also think they meant weird = different, and in a positive
manner. Discussing like adults and not like e-thugs who want to proove
themselves, forums would be a nicer place. oh well.

Like I said, weird I can live with. There are a few other terms I have been entitled with in my day that make being weird refreshing.

As for baiting me, I doubt thats even possible. Lets hope it is anyway since I kinda like it here and would not want to leave if I can help it. I am not easily enticed to anger. I am not a monk either so the old saying "it takes two" cannot happen if I bow out.

Yeah, weird sounds good.
There is no history until something happens, then there is.

I should probably make some clarifications about the "Orph" thing: actually, it was a joke. Underdog said "who shouldn't I be messing with in this website?", so I indicated one of the nicest members, if not the nicest  ... I thought he'd say something or go on with the joke, but apparently he didn't read it, or it pissed him off. If that is the case, I assure you it wasn't my intention to bash anyone...

Or my sense of humour has stopped being very funny...
