i turned on steam this morning and had to update HL2, CSS, and SDK. i opened CSS to see what the newest thing was.
the only thing i was greeted with was 8 fps.
it is unplayable.
i checked the video options and found HDR was on high so i turned that off and all the options back to what they were.
again only 8 fps.
just a few days ago i got a playable 25 - 35 fps and now i cant even play it.
it is the exact same with HL2.

so can anyone suggest what is causing the problem?

my specs are:
1.7ghz pentium 4
640mb RAM
Geforce FX5200
intel mobo
Bullet Control: $5000 for a bullet.

I too am having the same problems. At first I thought the game was
unable of writing the userconfig.cfg file but I was wrong. I am now
stuck at 8 glorious FPS on lockdown.

Anyone have any ideas before I slit my jugular?

my specs are:

1.8ghz AMD AthlonXP

512mb DDRx1

Geforce FX5200 128MB DDR (latest driver).

Try re-running Steam. That update tha you're talking about, a lot
of people had trouble with it. They released another update that
fixed the errors.

My only guess.

Update your video drivers as well. Maybe its that the old drivers can't handle the new HDR.

Really?

<span style="color: lightblue;">

I got the HDR update just as it came out last night and steam hasn't updated ever since. Am I missing something...?</span>

Thanks for posting this here.

I just updated steam, but I'm not touching anything until the next
update. It's so sad Valve borks up something with every update they
release.

And it's not small glitches, we're talking about a lot of people who've
paid for a game they cannot play whenever they want to. And that's just
not right. I'm not against the steam system if it really works and runs
smoothly. But it doesn't, appearently.

i think i found the problem.
while going over my video options it said my hardware level was 'DirectX 9' when before it had been at 8. so i think that my ancient card trying to run source at a hardware level of DirectX 9 is what is dragging my fps down. my card never ran at it before and thats why i had playable fps.
anyone know what to do about this? (i am planning on getting a new card but money is something i dont have just now)

I would love to think that the source engine was made to run well on a
large variety of machines, from NASA-worthy ones to old crusty
coal-powered ones, and that VALVe kept and will keep this thought in mind at all times. Cause if they won't
then they risk loosing a large segment of the gaming public. Not
everyone can afford to buy expensive hardware every year to keep-up
with game requirements.

That command doesn't seem to exist.

And nothing is "broken", it's just that our antique display adapters
can't keep up with the latest graphics update. And that we seem unable
(or just too stupid, which is a possibility) to deactivate it.

The command is "dxlevel 80", and yes, it does exist.

Further more, the steampowered support area says that there's a good chance it will not run well if you 512MB of ram ... or less. (It goes further to recommend you clear up as much ram as possible)

I haven't tried, but I bet this is the reason why mine is crashing.

I had no problems. I booted up HL2 looked at my options they where the same, minus the HDR option. The game worked fine.

i tried 'dxlevel 80' into the console but did not work. but my card trying to run at directx 9 is what it is. i have all my settings on low and it still looks like high texture detail plus high shader detail.

So have I. It doesn't seem to run from the console.

[edit]

Rival, go make steam.exe a shortcut and paste this after steam.exe under "target":

-console -applaunch 320 -dxlevel 80

That how I fixed it.

You can use the 'find' command in the console to, well, find console
commands. The one that controls the directX level is something like
mat_dxlevel or such, just do a find for dxlevel.

I'm still having some performance downs now and then though, I can't remember having them so badly before this update...

Heh, yeah, with the overload of commands these days...

I used a similar command in FarCry to find a suitable cheat to get past
one of the last levels. Disabling the AI was a nice one, not as
standard as godmode or noclipping...

Well, you can use 70, 80, 81, and 90. Meaning: DirectX 7, 8, 8.1, and 9 respectivley.

It suggested 8.0 to fix the errors caused by that new patch.

I also believe "dxlevel" is a launch option ... meaning, if you do it in game, chances are, you'd have to restart the game. But that's a guess.

Having a nasty 5200 sure isn't helping your situation any. At this point, my gaming machine is in storage and I cannot even play HL2 ATM, but with this 56k I have now, I am not really in any hurry either.

Good luck with this issue. It would be curious to know if anyone not using a GeForce card is having this problem.
There is no history until something happens, then there is.
