I want to know if it is just me, or if everyone has such horrid internet traffic limits. Mine is 3gigs. If I exceed it, they cut me off. Do you guys all have unlimited? I live in south africa, thus I get crappy internet. But I want to know:

What is your limit?
Is 3gig laughable?

I haven't actually known anyone in the US with a transfer-limited broadband connection. I guess the American internet just r0xx0rz European internet.

Mine is unlimited transfer, and the only restriction I know of is that they disallow running any kind of server. My house would burn up 3GB in a week or less.

people" as regards to I.T., don't get unlimited :smile: Although as fishy
points out, unlimited is with strings attached - ie, if we catch you
downloading s**tloads of films/music etc, you're suspended.

I probably use about 3 gigs of down bandwidth every 2 days.

Till I got my taboo burner, I downloaded several 700 megs files daily. (700 being the optimum size for that file type)

Nobody has a worse "unlimited" deal than me. I can tell you Orph's is close, but still no cigar.

My internet is to internet what Denny's is to Sausage.

My internet it Satellite. Or as we call it, s**tellite, when it breaks. You can't use it during storms, it has a 718 DL rate and only 128UL. If you download more than 300MB within 8 hours they kick your speed down to 4kb/s until it is reset after 12 hours. You wold think with 728, that one could play games on this connection, but you'd be wrong. One can't. You see, satellite internet technology uses "burst speed" technology like a CDROM drive. It saves up all the data for like a whole second then jizzes it up into space for the satellite to process. So when I play HL or HL2 online, I go from the spawn place, one second later, I am 10 feet away and in the next second I'm dead from some player I didn't even see move by me in a crouch as he took my ammo and typed "lozl lagnub" very slowly.

If you ever live 15-20 miles from the closest town and your nearest phone company has 150 subscribers, and you want internet, feel free to call the satellite internet company, and get something spikey crammed in your butt every time your lovely STEAM has some updates to DL.

Unlimited. No one really cares what is download. The traffic is not monitored by the ISP, of course logs are kept, however.

There are caps on speed though, 5 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up. The service goes upwards of 30/5.

I've got unlimited DSL, and when Verizon aren't being dicks about "maintainance"(read as "pissing people off because they feel like it"), which rarely happens, it's pretty damn good.
Also, I've downloaded about 30 episodes of Futurama, varying in size from 30 to 260 Mb, in one night, without any repurcussions.

10gb/month 256k ADSL, after that, shaped to 64k. I wouldnt use a quarter of that most months tho. It was much worse a couple of years ago, 500mb limit above which you are billed for additional downloads (something ridiculous like 20c/mb). Fortunately it seems Australian internet plans are getting better, even if the coverage isnt (I'm extremely lucky to live in this area and not have pair gain).

I'm aware there are radio wireless internet services, like 802.11 on a citywide scale, but thats generally for inner-city laptop users and doesnt even extend to my area in the almost-outer suburbs, so its unlikely to be an option for you Orph. Doesnt hurt to look into it though. Nickel is right, satellite is really bad for anything time-critical like games or possibly VOIP (note the delay on TV interviews via satellite) but I'm guessing it would still be better than 33k dialup.

I know on my 6Mbps DSL my pings are slightly worse than when I had 5Mbps cable... I can only imagine that with internet at the speed of light your pings would roxor.

I really like my cable modem and Optimum Online. On local DoD:S servers in NYC, I usually ping around 8.

I play on a 786k, and get good pings. I don't know how your connection would would. You should look for the demo, and try it out.

I haven't played any online games since I got it.

It's damn fast though. Even though Comcast (my previous ISP) said their cable was faster (8Mbps) it only went about 4Mbps ... on a good day.

Fiber optics is a pretty much guaranteed speed. I pinged a server in San Fransisco and I got 4.98Mbps, which is good. If I ping something near my house, like Beaverton, I get like 5.11Mbps, which is awesome, because that's more than we pay for.
Most all downloads always go 400Kbps to 500Kbps now (off of corporate servers, of course), which didn't happen when I had cable.
It's probably because no one has FIOS yet (which is verizon's official lame name) and everyone has Comcast cable around here.

The only down side is the enormous modem they put outside your home. It transfers the light into an electrical signal for the router. So, like, if something is wrong with the connection, I have to go outside and unscrew a box to check it. Which, I haven't had to do yet. It has been incredibly reliable so far.

I think I'll connect to a CS:S server just to see how my pings are in a game. I know the connection is good though.

I connected to two different servers:
The first had a latency of 1707, my speed varied from 128 to 218
On the second server, the latency was 11, my speed varied from 14 to 25

I have DSL from iowatelecom. 512 DL, 256 UL. Unlimited amount, but a lot of people share the same line, so if someone downloads a lot, everyone else suffers. We used to have a problem where at around 7:00 PM, the transfer would drop to around modem speeds, but that no longer happens.

I always thought DSL must be pretty cheap in the US for example.

People talking about games: theres a lot more to consider than just connection speed. 256k should be ample bandwidth for the majority of games out there (I have pings of 50 on Australian Source servers on 256k DSL). Latency is the crucial factor. You can have an enormous fiber-optic connection, and still have terrible pings if youre trying to play across the Pacific. The server's connection is important as well, no amount of fiber optics will help if the server is hosted by some kid with DSL (which I suspect is the first server Crono connected to).

I have dial up that kicks out all the time because I'm far away from the exchange and it sucks that I can never get broadband or cable while I live here even though I compete in Queensland's CS comp TBGL which sucks since I can't practice.

I had 192kb, and I had pings of 50 for most games (I play on SA servers). Then it went up to 383kb/s, and I still get the same ping.

But I still wanna know, how much does a 45player server in BF2 use per second? Like 12kb/s?

The packet flow isn't static. It changes on how much stuff needs to be
sent(for example how many rockets/grenades are in the air at given
time). There were some transfer tables about the bandwidth needs of a
CS:S server in the valve developer wiki if I don't remember wrong. I'm
sure a bit of googling might give you the bandwidth usage for BF2. :smile:

The ping times are more affected by how quick the network is to react
to changes. For example I had a 512/512 cable at my studying apartment
last spring, I got ping times of 50 - 60 ms at german servers. Now I'm
tied to a 512/512 WiMAX connection, which has exactly the same download
rates, but the ping times are 80 - 110 ms on that same server.

I'm on 1500/256 ADSL with 25GB limit, but that costs me $70 a month. Prices are high thanks to one company that owns every ADSL exchange in Australia. =[ Things are starting to get better now with smaller ISP's rolling out their own equipment.

We only have one ISP, Telkom :rolleyes:

They charge $200 for 192kb, 3gig cap.

Well for me my cable is rated 5Mbps/512Kbps and the monthly limit is 60GB, but it's not a hard-cut...they'll usually complain if you blow that number out of the water. Depending on the person (most of my friends have done it at some point or another) you'll either get a scolding email, a phone call or just cut off for a while. This is for $39/month CAD.

I need to move to Canada.
