I don't know the best way to do this, but I have a little problem at my apartment.

One of the new tenants at the apartment are Koreans, and I believe they are dumping regular kitchen trash into the recycle bin. I know because I can see the Korean newspaper in the trash, along with some chicken bones and banaba peels.

It smells really bad in the recycle bin, which is just wrong.

I don't know how to tell them. I know they don't speak English (they're an older couple), but I don't think it's right to allow this random dumping to occur.

I think there's no such thing as recycling in Korea. This may be a foreign, Western world concept for them.

How should I approach the subject? I have never spoken to them before.

Just say politely, "Hello! Its really nice to have you here! You see
here its good to recycle things because it keeps the place clean and
doesnt mean you have to use more resources making new porducts. So it
would be very nice of you if instead of throwing this stuff away,
rather recylce it or keep it. Newspapers can become very handy!"
I would love to change the world, But they would'nt give me the source code.

Um, try bringing it up to the managers of the complex. They got them to sign a rent/lease agreement, I'm sure they can get them to seperate their garbage.

Now, of course, if they're assholes who jump on anyone doing something wrong, then, be cautious of that option, but if the people really don't know, then yeah.

In addition, you can go personally over and try to explain, best you can, that you'll have someone come over and talk to them about it. I'm sure they have to have some understanding ... how could they get into a legal agreement otherwise? How would they know when to pay their rent and so on.

Or do you own your place? Like a penthouse or condo type deal?

I know a couple people that speak Korean, I'm sure I could get them to write a note and I could scan it ... although, I can't confirm what it says so ...

Take your shotgun out from the cupboard and make 'em see how trash is seperated, eye to eye.

Christ, you're all so square. Calling the authority on them? I'm sure
they're not doing this to piss anyone off. Just see if you can get in
contact with 'em and see how much English they speak, then try and make
them understand.

throwing garbage in the wrong bin and I don't dare go over there and
talk to them so I sent for you. Give them a good slap will ya?"

I think you're mis-understanding aze. It's not like calling the cops on them or something.

I specifically said don't do it if the owners are dicks. But, they are the ones whom will get wrath from recycling henchmen. (They obviously already know how to establish contact and agreements.)

I'd imagine, if it happens enough, on a large enough scale, the managers will get notified and probably send out a "reminder" to every single person.

In any case, they can probably talk to them.

You could also print up a paper that says "Plastic. Cardboard. Paper ..." etc in Korean and stick it on the recycling bin. Put it up in a couple more languages, just to not seem discriminatory.

Going over yourself often causes long term trouble between people.
Especially over here, the environment agencies here often work in
conjunction with police in bad cases. They can also give them a fair
warning without causing any undue hatred.

Our landlady is very nice and reasonable, so I left a message on her
answering machine about what I saw. I'll let you know whether the
problem is resolved.

The Korean couple is very cute. Neither of them can parallel
park, so it takes a team effort--one driving and the other one
directing--to park the car. Even so, it takes more than five
minutes before they successfully park the car.

From my window, I get a perfect view of their common struggle.

Shoot them both in the back of the head, and dump them in the recycle
bin. Oh make sure to lay plastic down first.. wouldn't want to ruin
your floors.

( OH IT Helps if you read the message and not just the title.. DUH. )
yeah I think calling the landlord and just saying I dont think they
understand what they are doing, can you explain it to them??

Our landlady talked to them already, and they understand how to properly dispose of their trash now.

The old couple's daughter happens to be around, and she translated for them.

Everyone is happy now, and no one got shot.
P.S. Interestingly, when I looked closely on the recycle bin,
it's labeled in three languages--English, Spanish, and Thai. I
especially like the Thai sign, as the characters are very cool
looking. I'll take a picture if I can.

I say you drive them out of the apartment they live in. Try threatning them whenever you see them. Cut the electric for their flat. Paint "Get out Now!!!" In sheeps blood on their door and windows, or better yet, burn down their door.

The idea is to just be a real bitch to them, they can't report you if they can't speak English, right? Be Nasty! Then they'll go away and everyone will be happy, except the koreans.
