Pretty awesome stuff. The Citadel on Xen, in particular, catches my
eye. It seems practical enough to build, but also devastatingly cool
looking. The other stuff is great as well. If this guy didn't get the
job, yikes - I want to see who did.

Indeed -- it looks as though he had some kind of (better) idea as to
what happened to xen, than what we learn from the standard HL2 story.

Most of them are photoshop tracings, so don't be too amazed. The ones which aren't you can tell because the proportions are quite out. Thats why he didn't get the job!

You always word these claims in such a way to suggest "I know better!".
How do you know he did that, or that, if he did, that is the reason he
wasn't hired? If you don't "know" and are just speculating, then stop
wording these speculations in such a way as to suggest otherwise. I'm
not saying you are wrong here by the way, some of them do look like
they are painted over 3D models or something, but I don't really see
enough evidence to agree either.

Personally I think they are great, and could easily have been Valve's official concept art.

He did a good job of completing each piece, but there's something about his work that just didn't strike me as fluid enough ... like he just wasn't bursting with natural talent.

It's nothing I can really explain, but when I look at his stuff, and then I look at the concept art at www.conceptart.org I see a difference. Maybe its confidence, maybe its scope or color... but he doesn't quite measure up to the stuff on that site.

I hope I didn't come off as a prick just then.

Why create a concept piece of art from a situation that clearly occurs in the game? You can see where things have been traced, just look really closely- theres a difference between whats been completely made and what hasn't. I know because I do it myself on my course, you use 3d models and images, overlay them all and retrace to make yourself look amazing at drawing, its a cunning trick.

It's still good, I'm not denying that!

This is good stuff, but I'm not surprised if he didn't get the job. This looks like the talent of someone who needs another couple of solid years of study before he can compete with the level of professional talent that companies like Valve look for. It is impressive, and I sure hope this guy keeps pushing his stuff and improving, becuase he will be a true badass before long.

nice. though i must say, in that first pic, Alyx's head looks a bit like in the DM background (splash screen?).

You want sweet concept art? Check out the stuff done for Homeworld 2!

I've saved a bunch of those drawings to my computer, just because I
liked them so much. Specifically Rob Cunningham's stuff.
