Wow, that screenshot is awesome. Look at the detail... each blade individually rendered... oh wait, thats just the background.

If it does something cool-looking, like 3D windows or the like, show screenshots, but if its just XP with a black taskbar (and shortcut labels wrapping incorrectly), words will suffice. I wouldnt switch OS for looks.

I jave seen no evidence of this "3D
desktop" that they were bragging about... Pretty much just some new
looks. A goth taskbar, and some pretty grass.

Also, there's no FILE EDIT VIEW HELP at the top... you have to click the cog

I just want XP to stop changing my folder settings seemingly at random.
It gets so annoying to suddenly have certain folders as "music" folders
for no apparent reason, or for some folders to start using thumbnails
instead of tiles or lists like I had previously set them. If Vista gets
rid of that sort of behaviour I'll be happy.

Yeah, Every time I plug my flashdrive into a computer it's set back to freakin thumbnails!!! XP does this to me also.

Looks just like XP with a prettier theme. Who wants to waste computer resources on a 3d desktop anyway?

Um... couldn't you get the same thing with a theme?

Looking at these screenshots, looks like a waste of $100. :/

The really spectacular VIsta 3D-stuff (glass windows, a lot of transparancy) need a powerful CPU and video card, and now honestly, who wants to upgrade to have a few flashy windows. Rubbish I tell ya.<

And besides, I don't think it looks so clear at all. No structure in those map views.

So far, the thing that has been the most impressive is the installation process, which had minimal steps and automatically, "activates windows" and all you have to do is check the box that tells it to do so.

Also, this is a brand new computer. the only thing that IS missing is a powerful GPU.

Hmm, I was informed that Longhorn wasn't going to have a taskbar... changed I guess?

edit: Unless Microsoft tells me something spectacular about this
OS, I'd agree with everyone else : A flashier desktop and more
wasted cpu power is all I see here

Nickel, are there any new features that are worth mentioning?

Longhorn beta has been out/available for well over a year now. I had build 4096 or some odd number myself for a time but was afraid to use it for fear of not being able to play games with it or some other similar horror.

What, if anything is different? Is this beta legal, where mine might not have been?

I am also not talking about the program that makes your WinXp resemble longhorn, I had the beta of the real longhorn.

Morph- Not too much worth mentioning, other than the new IE has tabbed browsing, which pisses me off, but other ppl seem to like it. and they still use the STUPID windows XP style start menu.

Orph- nothing you have is legal. anyway, this is Beta2 and it was released by Microsoft directly to us because we are Government Funded.

Hey! I resemble that remark. (You have no idea how much legal vs. borrowed I do posses)

Still, thats not something you should say in an open forum. How would you like it if I told everyone how ugly your sister was before... Oops. Did I type that out loud?

On a serious note. I would bet that there is a claus that specifically states that You are not permitted to post screens on it. I'd read the fine print O'wise 1.

If I had any pee left after talking to Fisheye and Gwil in IRC I definitely would have used some on this comment. I seriously had a dry heave pee thing going I was laughing so hard.

To think, this from a Missourian. Will wonders never cease? We were gonna talk about you Nickel, but something more important came up. Beer.

I want Windows to go back to having more options during install, or at least give an admin/developer option first thing so that you can pick and choose what packages to install. They used to do this back in the day

I've seen the beta in use when I was in school. It really didn't show me much other than what I already basically do with StyleXP. (And yeah, I hate how you can't have folder settings just stay properly per folder, or pick which ones are set in the same way you can pick stuff with policies.)

The only thing I've seen so far that is even remotely different with Vista is a better local networking setup which really is almost nothing anyway. 5 years since XP for this so far? Give me a f**king break. I like Windows but this is an insult.

Definitely worth a few hundred $$$ for me to give to Microsoft...again...

Seriously...what is the point of getting Vista?
