I am not going to quote the entire article, because it's quite long. But here is the source.

But, what the hell is this. What has the world come to when you can molest a child, and because your short not go to jail.

I read the article - ridiculas. As they stated - short people can now go along, rob banks, murdor, rape and get away with it. Here in SA sex offending is a life sentance, wether you 2 feet tall or 20 feet you are in for the rest of your life.

So basically, they're trying not to discriminate short people by discriminating everyone else?

Ah! The oxymoron "positive discrimination" is at work then! Again.

There is probably an argument in there somewhere to claim that the guy's life would not have been worth living had he gone to prison, but it would have to have a lot of evidence for it. Similarly, I'm not entirely sure the article was balanced. Whilst it did have the views of one supporter of the probation, the quote included the line:
It's good to see somebody looking out for someone who is a short person.
Not necessarily the best argument in favour of it.

Having said all that, on the face of things it seems like a daft idea. It might be well-meaning, but I'm not sure that makes it a good idea. It detracts from the whole "prevention, retribution, rehabilitation" philosophy.

does this give every shortarsed criminal grounds to appeal for an early release, with the possibility of seeking compensation the state?

Bah, people are idiots.
A spokesman for the prison system said Thompson's height would not put him at risk among the state's 4,400 inmates. There are protections available in prison to help inmates who feel threatened, prison spokesman Steve King said, but to his knowledge, no one has ever taken advantage of them based on fears related to their height.

"He's not the shortest guy we have in prison," King said. "We've got some short guys that are as tough as nails. We've got people from all ages, physical stature of all sizes, in general population."
He's not even that short. 5'1".

Edit:
Andrei- That's not a result of freedom, it's a result of the cultural climate being so f**ked up, because politics is too heavily influenced by special interest groups.

  • Special interest groups are worse than racism.
  • The guy should be put in jail to let him work off his debt to society one butt-rape at a time. He should ahve thought of all this when he started molesting kids!

Hey Nickel, wanna start a special interest group against special interest groups? We can ask for donations and run slanderous ad campaigns about the other special interest groups.... it'll be fun!

I was rather thinking that the "land of the free" mentality has gotten
to people's heads and now they think being different is a right rather
than a characteristic, but I imagine what you say being the truth though.

Isn't it grand. There are so many things now to protest against.

In Sweden we have specific prisons for sex offenders since they are so hated by other prisoners, same thing goes with corrupt cops.
As far as I know, many get psycological care instead of a "real" prison.

The longest time a person ever has been in prison for one crime in modern Sweden is 24 years. He is sentenced for lifetime, but will probably set free in the future.

I know its not a funny situation, but your wording had me in stitches. I would hope that if he is ever set free, that it is in the future.

a friend's son was sentenced to life for murder, with a recommendation not to serve any less than 14 years. if he hadn't gone back to his victims house and tried to burn it to the ground to hide his crime, he would have done no more than 8 years, and it would still have been termed a 'life sentence' by the brit legal system.

Yeah, our special interest group will be called NAAAG or the National Association for the Advancement of Average Guys. We will support everything that is protested by other special interest groups. and "peaceful assembly" is not part of our charter.

Andrei, I love your wording. People today think that being different automatically makes them good or somehow initiates them into the intellectual elite. Instead of "different" just meaning different.

Perhaps Britain is trying to repent for all the people unjustly incarcerated in centuries past. During Britain's conquering era, I imagine quite a few prisons filled with.... Discontented members.

depends on what side you look at it from. normally i'm in favour of the death penalty, but that's because i believe that the sentences handed out by the courts don't serve as a real deterant.

but how can i be in favour of hanging someone, when i remember throwing him in the air as a child like it was yesterday?
