Well Canadian Politics are usually pretty boring, if not nonexistent. But today something interesting finally happened. Quebec is now recognized as an independent nation within Canada. At this stage, I don't believe there's any real impact at all, but Quebec finally did it.

For those not in the loop, Quebec has been trying to break off from Canada since forever, and not until our new PM stepped in have they managed to do it. They've had I think 3 referendums, and each time it's been voted against, but the PM thought it would help or something like that...

So yeah... damn Quebec...

Yeah, 'cause they keep trying to separate. It's been an issue since pre WWI.

Apparently it's just a symbolic move to cheer up the angry French - Quebec will still function as a union with Canada:

Not that I care much living on the West Coast and generally being ignored Federally anyway, but it's a potential stepping block towards them trying to seperate. They practically are anyway other than sharing the same currency. Personally I'm more for the Cascadia idea of the western Provinces and the States west of the Rockies making their own country, that's where most of the resources and technology comes from...it'd be mighty prosperous.

No, I think they're gonna squable more until they're a separate country. If we lose them though, I think we might drop to 3rd largest country.

Cool!

It must have been a great day for may of those who lived there.

However I generally don't like it when countries split up. Big nations often have the possibility to push mankind/science in a direction much easier and efficient than a small country.

I really hope that EU can become more unified, but actually do think its doing great already (besides the fact that the farmers is getting like 50% of the cash).
Lots of great projects is supported by EU which help countries cooperate in environmental issues, as well as science.

It was tentatively WESTERN Provinces, Alberta is in the west. I'm not sure whether it was as far as Saskatchewan or Manitoba that was considered but it's not just BC.

I wouldn't be too worried about that. The SNP have been pushing that
line for years, and it's still fairly unsupported. If anything should
be making the headlines, it's the rise of "English" independence which
is being trumpeted by the red top papers and their sorts.

Either way nothing will come of it, the "break up the Union!" argument
(ie England Scotland AND Wales/Northern Ireland, theyre not invisible)
has been rolling for years with not even a serious debate in parliament.

Why do I have a feeling that you don't see the big picture here? Brussels is already dictating things within countries, forcing governments to make laws that would've never passed before because of their pure senselessness in the region. Farmers definedly don't get 50% of the cash, only the big ones do(Finland is a small country and as such we have become a payer instead of gainer in this situation). EU is dictating everything from hunting to waste and I can assure you that there's a long way from Brussels to here... Completely unified EU means the failure of Democracy, what's the use of voting if some German or French guy is going to dictate what happens inside your country anyway? Power will shift to the bigger countries and smaller ones will suffer. Most of you don't probably even see this happening because you're living in a country whose citizens are counted in tens of millions, but here where people are scarce it's already showing.
European Union has brought some good, but the fact that my freedoms are diminishing at alarming rate(ISPs are forced to keep logs of your movements in the internet for 6 months on the basis of preventing terrorism... Considering that there have been only a couple of attacks in Europe and almost all(if not all) of them in Britain and Spain, why in the name of hell rest of us have to suffer? This thing is going to make connection prices skyrocket... not to mention the fact that your movements are constantly tracked) makes it seem that we are losing more than we are gaining here... Sorry for my rant, but what seemed like a good thing in 1995 when we joined EU doesn't seem such a good idea now.

i love these kinds of arguments.....i have kids, im good at them... :heee:

1. EU sucks.....because?

2. you hope californian "bastards" break off and fall away because?

you dont have to write a novella sir, but a bit of reasoning would be appreciated, otherwise i might end up just thinking something stupid, like, "yer a shmuck", or something else distasteful.....

whats that word you brits use all the time..... asshat?

oh, sorry! forgot my elaboration!

Eu sucks because:
  • they steal national identities.
  • they embody a failure of democracy
  • They think thier s**t don't stink.
I hope california becomes its own country because:
  • I hate thier political policies
  • They make USA look bad
  • my brother is from there

I tried sniffing coke, but the ice cubes kept getting stuck in my nose.

Sadly, without the half drunk slurring most Brits use, "Arse" just doesn't work in the States.

it doesn't work well with the way a lot of english accents shy away from the letter R, either. it sounds much better with a scottish or irish accent.

<span style="color: white;">That's mostly true with French... I could list why I think that US of A sucks, but I'm sure you're all completely aware of those reasons.

By the way have you noticed that annoying way that french online gamers have? They refuse to speak english even though everyone else on the server is speaking english. So if Quebec is a mostly French speaking city, I can't say that this wasn't happening soon(double negative, so what).
