@Orph/fishy

Fix of this problem:

Is it possible to code some kind of image-size-check? So that even external graphics are only shown if they are 800x600. A message could tell the user "Please resize your images" or something like that - don't know if it's possible since I am no PHP guru.

Ding, as far as I know, it's only Gwil that's dealing with the site code now. I don't know the first thing about how that stuff works. :dorky:

'Though I don't imagine your suggestion would be the most difficult thing to do. The pit already resizes external images over 800x600, so blocking them shouldn't be too hard.

are you seriously suggesting that i can't use my own webspace to host images that i show here?
I read this again this morning. I was confused at first because I assumed you meant your pit, which you have but seems totally unused.

Now though, I am more inclined to believe you meant a host outside Snarkpit. The answer is still "I dunno", but at least I think I now understood your comment.

I personally don't like external links for the official map profile pics. They get no thumbs, only small, little icons that are easy to overlook and are annoying to click (because they mostly lead to 1600x1200, 500kb pics anyway  ). Last but not least they're often gone after 6 months resulting in map profiles with no proper pics at all. If you want more than 3 pictures, provide an additional link or post pics in the forum. 5 is kinda random as a limit also. Either you can present the map in 3 pics or you need 8 or 10 anyway.

Also the thumbs make the map profile more compact and clear on a first look. I think linking 5 external pics to the super-official map-profile isn't a necessary feature. You can provide a few links in the description or somewhere else if you need more than 3 pics.

My 160kb suggestion was mainly about little inconsistencies (like 1024 vs 1000 bits to form a kilobyte, ect). So if you say 100kb is the limit, then there should be a 10kb buffer (like pictures that are 101kb). Maybe 100kb are better than 150. It's a nicer number, anyway.
Why snark works.

Spam-Bots on Snarkpit:

Check out some of the latest registrations here. You will see a lot of people having the same term in "user name" and "location". If you check the home pages of these guys you will find something like http://porn-pictures-loka.blogspot.com/ etc.

Examples:

So, what's the plan, gwil?

Hello, I don't know if this has been suggested before, since I've neevr really spent that much time in the old thread unfortunatly.

But wouldn't it maybe be a nice idea to add a page to the website called 'competitions' with screenshots and downloads of old competition maps etc.
And maybe a function through which users can submit their own ideas for competitions.

I know you lads usualy use the forums for this type of thing, but it would maybe be interesting and more popular if you'd make a simple page for this.

Though I don't know if this is easy to code/implement into this website.

And if you can't see what you are typing, go to your profile and tick the box that disables as much java scripts as possible.
Fixed that problem for me.

Level Design Discussion forum: we have the editing forums, which really only cater to asking specific questions with somewhat concrete answers; and we have GB, which seems to be the catchall for everything else except map threads and showing off 2D/3D art/photos, including (mostly) off-topic stuff. There's no specific place to discuss design theory, techniques, etc. and I think such a forum would fit very nicely into the Snarkpit community.

I think you could suggest some theorys etc. in General Banter, but indeed, maybe a place for those hardcore level designers that want to talk about engines, elaborate on new tecniques and stuff like that, it wouyld be nice to have a place of their own.

But you can always open a topic in General Banter untill that time, I'm sure people will reply to it in there just as well.

I don't have anything in particular in mind, it's just that those topics seem to have a good run at the start then get buried rather quickly, once they hit page 2 they're pretty much as good as dead. Having a forum specifically for those kinds of discussions would allow them to stay on the front page of topic listings much longer, and would probably help keep them more on topic. It could also be a place to post test/theme/concept screenshots and floorplan/concept drawings, and for people to ask abstract questions that usually just remain unanswered in the editing forums.

That is true, I think in general banter the other topics do outpost the more level design focused ones.

I always thought the level editing forums are too restrictive (allowing only questions, not discussions in general). Good idea, Snickers!

I agree wholeheartedly - a new forum, perhaps for overall game development discussion (as opposed to the gallery/help sections we have), would be a useful addition to the site. I think Gwil might be able to make that happen...

This is more of a suggestion about being open minded, more so than actually creating another forum:

I would like to see people post links to other engines and authors works. I mean, HL2 can do almost anything that the other big engines can and I feel that duplication is just about the most flattering aspect of level editing.

day gone by we all tried to recreate something that HL1 couldn't quite pull off, and no one seemed to get to worked up about it (except that time I got ripped for recreating that Q3 map by Dietz)

Anywho, I would like to see people openly express their desire to see another engines work recreated for HL2.

/Xmas wish list.

Or mapping for other engines entirely, a good place for that would be a General Level Design board. :heee:

Yeah, that's a pretty neat idea, but I guess like gwil said on irc, the whole forums might need a complete overhaul, so it might take some time and effort to make it all work.

I'm really curious about what is going on in the background right now? Are Gwil or others about to change the site's structure (or code)?

If/when there is another update for Snarkpit, I'd like to see the maps "chapters" removed.

Its annoying in its current form. I would either like to see them removed, or better, have it so that when you create a new chapter, you have the option of self locking the previous ones to prevent having posts scattered all over time.

To see a reply in a months old chapter, that was meant for a more recent chapter is yucky.

If only lep would fix the bug with Firefox Browsers. I don't care whether or not who is more standard-compliant, it just has to work ... 10 % of people browsing use FF, we might just be losing that 10% when it comes to posting.

Oh, sweet. I could tell it was probably a Java issue because when I installed Firefox 2 it said I had an incompatible Java Add-On and after 'Searching for Updates' (I use quotes because such activities by my computer rarely work), my computer basically gave me the finger.
