So whats new?
Play the orange box yet? Hands down: best single player FPS of the year, best 'awkward' game of the year, and best multi player game of the year, all rolled into one convenient package that costs ~1.2 of any regular new release game.

Hey mate, nice to see a familiar face making a return  Whats new? Not an awful lot really. As omega said though, the Orange Box is really rather special, and once you've played it TF2 and Portal might just change your mind about what game you want to get back into mapping for!

Those evil, evil MMORPGS... keeping so many people away from mapping.
Why snark works.

Well some stuff that I have been doing recently.. I moved to Gulfport MS, lived there for 6 months building houses for Habitat for Humanity, and working in a casino. Was asked by family to return to El Paso TX to help take care of an ill uncle. So I am back here, board to death.

I cant seem to get my sdk to set up and work. I noticed there is also a new Source SDK base as well as the normal Source SDK.. whats the difference? I followed the set up instructions but every time I reload it the I get no game selections. So I have not been able to map.

I'm glad to see so many faces I recognize. Fishy I remember them Snarks..! The only thing is its backwards. =) I should use that as a texture in a map. =)

I have not yet tried the Orange box.. I may soon though. I am so outta mapping practice I am having to relearn so much... so who knows what I will end up mapping for lol.. most likely CounterStrike or DOD source.

If anyone has some suggestions on how to get my SDK to work.. please let me know.. I want to get started mapping again.

The ominous "Source SDK Base" is just a base for mod developers to be used for third party mods. Not an SDK itself but a bare-bone version of the Source engine that can be used by mods without needing a specific game (HL2, etc) as a base to run on. As far as I understand. Doesn't hurt to have it installed, though.

The non-base Source SDK contains all the mapping related tools. No need to set up FGDs etc. Just install the SDK, load the little start SDK window and make sure the right game is chosen in the "Current Game:" box on the bottom of the window. Then start Hammer and get mappin'.

PS: I heard you have to start the game you want to map for at least once before loading the SDK.
Why snark works.

yeah load each game you want to map for and fire it up, then it should pop into the SDK.

Nice to see you again money!
