No idea..
The Full story.
Full Story.
NEW YORK (Sept. 6) - The family of a slain motorist has filed suit against the maker of a video game that two teens claim inspired them to shoot at passing cars on a Tennessee highway.
Grand Theft Auto, a video game that allows players to "fire" on people and cars in realistic, shoot-'em-up fashion, is a cash cow that propelled manufacturer TAKE2interactive to the top of the video game industry. For the middle and high school students who play the game for hours on end, it's a means of escaping the monotony of teenage life.
But for two stepbrothers, 16-year-old William and 14-year-old Joshua Buckner, that escape turned deadly this summer. They told police they were emulating Grand Theft Auto on the night of June 25 when they took shotguns to Interstate 40, near their Newport, Tenn., home, and opened fire on vehicles.
A Bullet Through the Window
The boys told police they did not mean to hit people, but the results were catastrophic.
"I have eight bullet fragments all in my body," said 19-year-old Kimberly Bede, of Moneta, Va., who was hit in the pelvis as she rode in the passenger seat of her boyfriend's car. "The bullet entered my hip and I'm still receiving medical treatment."
Aaron Hamel, a 45-year-old registered nurse from Knoxville, Tenn., traveling in a separate car, was killed.
"We had a beautiful day in the mountains, and we were heading back home to Knoxville," said Hamel's cousin, Denise Deneau on ABCNEWS' Good Morning America Friday.
"We were talking, laughing, listening to music and all of a sudden my cousin told me to look at the beautiful flowers. And as I did that, my glass shattered and I felt heat across my face," she said.
When Deneuau saw the glass and blood she thought she had been shot, but when she realized the car was out of control, she looked at Hamel. "He had a large bullet hole at the side of his head," Deneuau said.
After the car made it across the highway, passing oncoming traffic, it stopped at the guard rail.
Deneuau said she knew her cousin would die quickly from the nature of the injury. "I reassured him that I was OK and that I would take care of his pets and I told him that I loved him," she said.
Family members say the nature of Hamel's death is especially ironic because he had volunteered to work at a Tennessee facility for wayward teens shortly before the shooting.
Teens Plead Guilty, Lawsuit Filed
The teenage shooters, who each pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, will be held at a state juvenile detention center until they turn 19. The law in Tennessee allows them to remain in the custody of the state Department of Children's Services until they are 19, but no longer.
In written statements, the boys expressed remorse for their actions.
"I will always hate myself for what I did. I am so sorry," wrote William Buckner.
"I didn't want to hurt anyone," wrote Joshua Buckner. "This will be with me the rest of my life."
The Hamel family hired attorney Jack Thompson and filed suit Thursday against TAKE2interactive, the video game maker. Thompson says it's time to send a message to the video game makers.
"We want to send a message with a huge verdict to Sony and TAKE2interactive and the entire video game industry that if they're going to continue to market adult-rated games to children with these horrific consequence, then we're going to take their blood money from them and send a message to their boards that they have to stop this practice or there will be other suits on behalf of other people, killed by these games," Thompson said.
TAKE2interactive declined to comment to Good Morning America about the incident.
Are Parents the Gatekeepers?
It's not the first time the game Grand Theft Auto has been linked to bouts of real-life violence.
A gang of teenagers in California, charged with plotting carjackings and murder, say their actions were inspired by playing Grand Theft Auto, morning, noon, and night.
In Oakland, Calif., a group of young people who called themselves the "Nut Cases" told police they played violent video games before going out and robbing and killing random victims on the street. They said their favorite was Grand Theft Auto. The five men and one woman are facing charges in dozens of robberies and five killings that took place in 2002 and early 2003.
The Entertainment Software Association, which represents the video game industry, pointed to research showing that youth crime has gone down even as video games have proliferated. The games are rated for violence, and ultimately, parents make the decisions about what games they bring into their homes, the association said in a statement.
"Parents are present at and involved in the purchase or rental of games 83 percent of the time, according to a September 2000 Federal Trade Commission report," the association said.
Family members of those killed in video game-related shooting sprees say it is time to take Grand Theft Auto off the market, before more lives are lost.
Bede, who says she will never fully recover from the incident that left bullet fragments in her body, isn't satisfied with the sentence the Buckner boys received. "I really don't think they got what they deserve," she said.

on one hand, I think directly blaming games, music, and anything other than the parents and society for violence like this is a cop out.
on the other hand, the GTA games sound pretty sick to me just from what I have heard.

its a problem but if a kid cannot understand a game is a game they have something wrong imo.
Anyone heard the idea behind XIII ? t'was that if it looked cartoony/cell shaded but still kept the extreme action/gore in it kids wouldnt take it seriously. I think itd work, problem is some of us (myself) want realistic looking shooters.

The thing that pisses me off most is that these kids are not allowed to be tried as adults. They'd be facing a real penalty and a whole HELL of a lot of jail time if they weren't so inconvenientally aged. Let em sit in juvie til they turn nineteen and then stick em in the real slammer for another fifty years I say.
Sick, sick, sick.

CCS, if you want to put somthing in jail, it should be the parents.
Those kids are a bit old for it, but children in general do not differentiate between reality and fiction the way adluts do. at this point, they have to be segrigated from society, but an insane asylum or some sort of counseling center would be more apropriate.
The very concept of GTA is disgusting. I've never played it, only watched other people, but I find it skickening. That said, though I also think It's silly to ban violent games. it's the parents job to raise their kids in a respoceible fassion.

If a 16 year old is old enough to drive a car, I sure as hell hope he can differentiate fact and fiction. Maybe you have a point for the younger one, but I think many of our ages of social responsibility are unnecessarily high.
Think about what these people did, they went to a freeway and OPENED FIRE on passing cars. That's f**king wrong, and there's no reason a 16 year old and a 14 year old shouldn't know this. Also, they did not just fire once. They fired at the cars and CONTINUED FIRING after people started getting hit. Honestly, does three years in juvenile hall really make any sense as a punishment?
I would not be against charges being brought up against their parents/guardians as well, but only in addition to, not instead of the kids.

You make a good point Jinx. The parents probably had no idea what their kids were doing. In todays society it is easier to sue some maker of music or games than to actually take responsibility for your own actions.

topics like this, should be avoided unless one is truly ready for the responces..
mine, are along CCS's, but a bit harsher..
decisions = consequences IMO
harsh outcomes = harsh punishments
if parents cannot teach children these two fundamental things, the parents should share in the punishments..
thats about all i should say, cause i could go off on a tangent here not many would like
for the record, my youngest son (now 16) plays all the car games, i don't particularly like them, but there is no way that someone could confuse them with reality.. hitman was far more realistic, and it still was cartoonish IMO.. anyways.. i have seen the games, the concept of an RPG round impacting with the body in HL is about equal IMO..

I think, like Kornflakes said, that you have to be pretty tapped in the first place to try and re-enact GTA or any other violent game - most of the hundreds of of kids at school played it and I am yet to see any direct portrayal of its violence through them.
It's easier to blame videogames than it is to blame imperfections in a human or their parents..

bottom line, any kid who would do these acts, would do them no matter.. the game is not the catalyst, just the excuse..
believe it or not, i was more/less carded the other day when i purchased the movie "erin brockavich" crowd gasps yes i know, but i couldn't get this great movie thru kazaa
anyways, the government bullshit about under17 s**t is for the birds, it never prevented me from getting what i wanted, not is it for my children, i will decide what is appropriate viewing, and i alone..

The point is this guys:
After your done playing Wolfenstien:Enemy Territory, do you have the sudden urge to fight nazi`s in a forest of snow?
After playing Half-Life, do you want to pick up a crowbar and whack innocent bystanders?
After playing BF:1942, do you want to RENT a bomber and bomb half of the country?
No...Well, maybe hitting innocent bystanders would be fun..But thats not the point, the point is:
THESE KIDS ARE f**kING IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!
I now end my statement.

I think we all pretty well agree with you. my only difference is that I don't think these kids were particularly insane. I've seen any number of kids (normaly yunger than 12) who have very little grasp of reality. they've all had dumbass parents.

Guess what, asshole parents of a bunch of fucked-up kids, and your lawyer too: it's time to
"We want to send a message with a huge verdict to Sony and TAKE2interactive and the entire video game industry
SHUT. What the hell should you know about the gaming industry?
that if they're going to continue to market adult-rated games to children with these horrific consequence,
THE. Emotions encourage behavior in the stupid, not in the strong.
then we're going to take their blood money from them and send a message to their boards that they have to
FUCK. Blood money? I thought that you were the one making thousands of dollars off suing innocent people for the sake of murderers.
stop this practice or there will be other suits on behalf of other people, killed by these games," Thompson said.
UP. I am absolutely sick of people who have never played or seen a game in their life pronouncing instant judgement on it because bad things occur as a result. Morons who shouldn't be allowed to play games are the ones who kill. There are millions upon millions who have spent their entire lives seeing artificial death and never even thought of killing someone, and I'm one of them.

Its a s**tty excuse but for such a small sentance it worked for them.

I play GTA plenty of hours a day, racing around and having a fun time in a virtual reality world, right along with my senseless murder of innocent marines on Natural Selection, and my bullet time slaying of The Specialists; and not one time have i wanted to do it in real life.
stupid parents + violent games + stupid kids + lack of common sense + guns(ammo) = murder/harm
This is the case about 99.9% of the time IMO.

I live in america, and i agree...The stupidity rate climbs everyday here, and people wonder why?
I am probally one of the reasons, but there are people 100x stupider than me..Yes, its hard to believe
People today are just trying to find ways to ban all video games that have explict or mature content, because they see video games as a waste of time...I think video games actually decrease the suicide rate in teens because if not for video games, where would depressed people stick all of there time?

Orph...it's a lot easier to kill with a gun than bare hands. With a gun it can almost be an "oops" moment. To kill someone otherwise with pure physical force would be viciously brutal and take more than an instant. It's not quite the same.

Yer I agree with Gorby. Guns are so easy to kill with, point and pull, done. And no mark is left at the crime scene apart from a bullet, something there are so many of.

I'm not being selective in those views...give me good examples and show me what you mean. I understand that you could kill with any weapon, but a gun is such an easy to use weapon...it doesn't take much. I'm not blaming the gun...I think you read me wrong. But I'm blaming stupid kids...they're so lazy that if there was no easy access to guns there would for sure be a drop in violence. I'm not against guns, but I'm not for retards getting ahold of them, that's just being irresponsible.

What you said Orph, about if people WANT to kill, they WILL, explains a large portion of the Murders in the US i would think, but (Sorry another stat for you!) I asked a friend of mine who is apoliceman, in fact he was the best man at my wedding, so I know I can trust this, If he would like a gun he said no because he looked into it and found the figure that 40% of police deaths by shooting is caused by friendly fire.
On another note pertaining to Statistics, perhaps a better comparison would be to look at the whole of Europes shooting figures compared to Americas as Much like the Europe, each state has different laws, punishments and guidelines concerning fire-arms. Just to compare Britain to USA is unfair, a better comparison would be to compare the UK to a state in the US with similar laws. I think then you would see a comletely different comparison.
and besides 90% of statistics are made up anyhoo!

I would like to hear a few good reasons as to why guns are good, besides simply that I am a close minded city-person.
Saying 'guns don't kill people, people kill people' is all well and good, but what reasons are there for their existence.
Insulting the other side of an argument by calling them close minded at every opportunity unfortantely only makes people believe you don't have a very strong case.

if you seen a news clip on cnn, showing afgan or iraqi schools that had been supplied with ps2's, and custom games of 'suicide bomber', or such like.
the state spokesperson says 'this is only a harmless game, for all for the kiddies to play and enjoy, without them actually doing it for real. we tell them that doing it for real would be a very bad thing'
how many people here would say,'yes, harmless fun, wont influence the kiddies at all.'
