 OK am having problems with this. When i read something about the valve.rad and lights.rad that i can't copy and paste the info in the valve file because it's something that u need so you can open it. I'm thinking that I need to just open it then open it from the clipboard but i don't want to run it. YA YA YA you are probably laughing at the little noob i was doing this a while ago but forgot what to do.

NOOB NOOB NOOB (with little noobish styles)

If you want your textured lighting to work. the lights.RAD file has to be in the same folder as the compiling tools. You can delete the valve.RAD file. If you want, I have my .RAD file that you can download if yours dosent work.

WC, ask yourself, would this not be one of the most asked questions at an editing forum?

shoot bud, it was part of my Tid-Bits tut for ages..

looks around

where is my tid-bits tut???

oh well, still its a very common question, and has multiple answers here.

Delete the lights.rad, and rename valve.rad to lights.rad this is used to enable the text lights to give off light.

cough, no Omega. You delete "Valve.rad" and leave the original "lights.rad".

:azelito: No vash, omega is right. The lights.rad with VHE is an empty file. So you need to delete it. But valve.rad has a lot of default light entries, and ZHLT only accepts lights.rad so you need to rename valve.rad to lights.rad.

Also, place your lights.rad in the same directory as your compile tools (hlXXX.exe)

You know this whole deleting thing was wrong it didnt answer the question originally, what you do to edit the light vales, is either download a program and chang it yourself (dont remember where I got it though) or change the ending from .rad to .txt, this will change it to a text file with six light values (dont know how they work) and you change those values, then make sure you rename from .txt back to .rad

you open lights.rad in note pad and copy wateva is in there [me thinks it is a white texture] then paste it in the valve.rad, then delete the lights.rad and re-name valve.rad to lights.rad

Double click on your .rad file. Windows will now say, "Hey, I dunno what this is, whaddya want to open it with?" Then it will give you a list of all crazy sorts of programs you have on your computer. Scroll down to notepad (or textpad if you have it) and click on that one. If there's an "always associate this type of file with this program" box, click it. If for some reason .rad files are associated with another program, you can still open them in notepad by right-clicking on the file, choosing "Open with..." and then selecting notepad.

Red, Green, Blue, Intensity. Intensity usually has to be pretty big (>1000) to light up even a small area.

Just make your own rad file: mapname.rad in the same folder as the mapname.map! it's easy, and you don't need to worry about what the settings are between maps.
