Now I have my own computer with a permanent net connection I'm gonna get back into using IRC, and so I'm looking for a good frontend program. Obviously I have mIRC but what ones do other people use and recommend?

I'm one of those "idiots" that uses Trillian. Personally I can't stand mIRC. Hell I'd take the JavaIRC client over it.

I don't mind mIRC, but I also use Trillian. I hate cluttering up my taskbar and system tray with 8 million things when I can do it in just one

I've always used mIRC (except for way back, when i thought it 1337 to use non-standard things  ) but on this computer it is proving exceptionally annoying, as if it is maximised, nothing else can be displayed over it, even if I bring them on top

I use trillian. Works fine connects fast - I would only move to mIRC if I wanted to run a bunch of annoying mp3 scripts or away scripts (I think there are some for trillian anyway though).

Trillian, purely for the multiple chat networks.

  • mIRC + nnscript
  • Trillian (works great, don't understand why so called "idiots" shouldn't use this.)
  • Chatzilla (In combination with a Mozilla-based browser like firebird, works great too)

I don't use Trillian because it refuses to run for more than a half hour or so- it always seems to crash on me. Always.

I used it in the past, but stopped. Problem with it was that it would get disconnected from MSN every couple of minutes, thereby defeating the point of having multiple messaging programs in once since MSN was my main one. It seemed ok for IRC, but not as nice as mIRC. That could perhaps be attributed to my familiarity with the latter however.

Long ago I used Trillian, but there are certain things it cannot do...and those happen to be the functions I need. Voice and video chat were a bugger, and lots of little things. It had lots of neat features too, but since I don't use AOL or ICQ anymore either I don't need Trill.

mIRC is great, especially when you get a nice /play setup to show a bunch of 8-bit Nintendo sprites in the channel.

Also, I wrote a lot of scripts once to unban myself, kickban others, etc. I don't know much about the scripting features of Trillian, are they any good?

EDIT: DesPlesda has the right idea though.

I use Gaim for IM, and X-Chat for IRC.

Yeah, I use GAIM for the most part, but I still can't connect in to Yahoo for some reason...

Everything else works just fine, though.

That is surely true of any client? There are idiots using any program you care to name, doesn't say anything about the program...

Like I said, mIRC is good if you want to run a bunch of useless annoying scripts. If you simply want to use IRC, and send files, trillian is fine.

Definently mIRC, simply because its the best program for IRC out there. And even with mIRC there are scripts trough which you are able to connect to the MSN Network, they just aren't as nifty designed as Trillian. mIRC might have tons of annoying and useless scripts but it also has some genuine classics which is the reason that I'll always prefer mIRC over any other program.

Like said before, mIRC in combination with nnscript = teh 0wn.
