Another game making an appearance at E3. Looks like more of the same mindless killing we all love. Missions are for chumps.

That second shot makes it look far more realistic than the other GTA games graphically - makes me think more of Driv3r (which is looking really excellent  ) than GTA.

I'm not a big GTA fan really, I haven't bothered with them since the first game (which I loved, coincidentally). Doubt I'll end up getting this...unless I invest in the xbox GTA double pack before its released and decide I love the 3D style that is.

I'm not that impressed with the graphics - same old same old. I'm more interested in how the gameplay works out.

Looking forward to this game as well. Doesn't look like they have updated the engine much though? I can still see those awful trees where the canopy is just two flat sections at right angles...

If they don't fix the engine, correct all the mistakes from VC, and add multiplayer then I think I'll be done with this series. Is it too hard to ask for cars that don't vanish when you turn around? Or for not having every other vehicle on the road be identical to yours?

No. I meant computer. I'm aware it is also on consoles, but I don't really care. (Their engine has poor managment of draw distance and such. It doesn't get any better on the PC port.)

I was meaning that because its a port of the PS2 version, the engine is limited to run on the PS2. So the PS2 is the limiting factor, rather than the power of people's PCs. My eye rolling was at the limited power of the PS2 and my increased cynicism toward it as a system.

I was kidding around, Reno

But, yes. That is part of the reason, however, Vice City has the same problems and that was optimised for PC use (for the PC version).

However, they're still fun, even if they run rather slow. Also, I thought it was cool, in Vice City, that you (basically) play as Ray Liota and beat the s**t out of people  (Think Goodfellas).

Oh come one, how much of a slowdown would you get from getting the game to remember what car it just drew when you turn around?! I'd like to see more places to explore really- the vast sprawl of GTA3 was immense, there was quite a lot to visit, but VC was a bit too small for my liking :/

Well you'll be happy to know this is the last GTA game using this engine.

For those who haven't noticed the GTA3 series is a remake of GTA1- using the 3 cities from it and reconstructing the game to the 3rd person game it is now.

When did you play it? If you played it 2 years ago it was outstanding. But I agree mafia was better because it portrayed more crime senarios than GTA3 did, which is what I liked.
But for those of you arguing that the game was bad, then you obiviously havent played it long, once you get started you realise that you can literaly do anything (in vice city) and thats what made the game great, I mean How many times does muging a hocker get? Or ramming into somes one's car, or going over large jumps with their wacky physics engine? Or just stopping a car on the street and taking that car? There is nothing more funny than that.

I agree, if you could get into the gameplay of VC, it was awsome. I think a big problem was that many people had played through GTA3, and then VC wasn't that different. For me I had never played GTA3, so VC was all new. Seriously though, how can you say VC wasn't good? How many game awards did it get, and how popular was it?

I played it late last year. From what I saw, in all aspects, Mafia > GTA3. Mafia had a more engaging storyline, it had a far more efficient graphics engine (smooth fps on a GF2!!) and the cutscenes were absolutely brilliant.

You can ram cars, and stop cars in the street and steal them in Mafia as well...

GTA3 was also infinitely better and more playable on the PS2 imo.. the PC version has tainted it simply by having to use the keyboard (if one does not have a PC pad thingy).

It plays a lot better as a console game than PC, because its not

A) first person in regards to the combat system - more based on a simple one button aim and fire approach. much more suited to the PS2 pad/setup

B) driving - sometimes you need to be a slick mother in your wheels of steel, and im afraid keyboard/mouse just doesnt cut it as a tool for driving. with the exception of NFS:underground, (and a handful of others) most PC driving games/games with driving as a large element are pure cack.

wil5on - what on earth do you mean? you can ram cars, steal cars etc in GTA 3 also? I've not played Mafia, but i'm willing to wager that GTA3/VC also has a lot more "sub-games" to undertake, as there is depth beyond belief in that game.

also am i to presume that you work solely for the mafia through the game? the idea of GTA3 is to be a lone criminal, and move from gang to gang - making enemies/friends, and changes to the city as you go - a very "immersive" experience!

A PS1/2 to USB pad adapter is ?7 delivered from play.com. I've got one with two pads plugged in and they both seem to work perfectly in any game... I think they should sell that kind of thing a lot more for the PC, I think people would like a game with split screen multiplayer, or that allowed you to have one PC with two monitors. The main thing missing from PC gaming is not being able to play against people who are in the sample place as you (with the exception of turn-based games). I suppose the main problem with this idea is that a lot of people have a monitor that isn't very big...

Mafia may have the story and characters, but that was never really the point in a GTA game. GTA has more depth in terms of gameplay, giving you more freedom and more things to do. Mafia focuses more on the story aspect, and while it does give you some freedom, it doesn't really gel together as well as GTA in my opinion. Besides, GTA has tanks and apache helicopters you can steal.

I imagine it would play better as a console game. I think that might be why I didnt like it, it had a consoley feel to it.

Mafia has 2 game modes, you can play through the story or choose "free ride", you get a car and some money and you just drive around doing whatever. In GTA3, can you steal a taxi then drive people around for money? Didn't think so

Of course you can taxi...you can also go after criminals in the police car or military vehicles, pick up injured people in an ambulance, drive remote controlled toy cars with bombs strapped on them, or control remote conteolled helicopters, pick up people in a bus, partake in street races, sell rare cars, buy property.....and that's all of the stuff you get to do outside of the missions (in fact, I don't think I've even listed them all). I can't even remember how many missions there are in GTA: VC...

Driving the cars and overall control is much easier with a keyboard and mouse. Maybe your configurations are the default (to people who claimed it is easier with a controller).

I couldn't play the damn thing on PS2, it was such a pain in the ass.

In Vice City, you have to use a controller for the remote hellicopter. The boats drive just as the cars (just with bad handling) ... so maybe you need more practice, Jeff

However, something you can't deny is that, both GTA3 and Vice City look much better on the PC. (more so for GTA3).

Maybe I'm just too used to playing Hitman and such. But I have no problem blowing through those games.

I've read in a few places that the Xbox versions are the best versions - not sure if they meant in terms of visuals (since it took a while to port, perhaps the improved things?), controls, sound, or a combination of the lot. I've not gotten around to picking up the double pack yet, but probably will sometime.

I'm not sure if anyone else has brought this up yet but...

San Andreas won't just be a city; it's an entire state. 6x the size of Vice City, apparently. Deserts, mountains... Wow. Your character will have to eat and visibly gain weight. Empire-building is going to be overhauled as well.
