As many people have come to realize, Half-life 2 and Halo 2 are 2 of the most anticipated games of this year. And, at that, they realease within weeks apart  . My question is, which game do you think will be better? I ask this because several people claim that Halo 2 will beat Half-life 2, evan though I know half-Life 2 will blow Halo 2 away. Which shall win? it's up to you.

I agree with KFS, I guess. Either way, it doesn't really matter because each will be "better" in someone else's eyes. Hell, even if a poll says 70% of people like Half-Life 2 more than Halo 2, it doesn't mean that it's better, it means that 70% of people like HL2 more than H2, that's it.

Well,
this guy is some EGM (electronic gaming monthly) editor (elliot shawn)
, who got to play the game. By the tone of his respondents, you'll know
he's legit.

http://lithium.1up.com/zd/board/mes...scending&page=1

His quotes are:

I agree about Halo vs HL 1. But I'll s**t my pants if Halo 2 can
outdo HL 2. HL 2 is like Stanley Kubrick made a videogame, not
necessarily in its tone, but in its near absolute perfectionism.
Everything from A.I. to dificulty to sound to music to pacing to dialog
to just plain imagination is clearly the product of years and years of
love and genius

Best shooter ever made. Possibly the best single-player game I've ever played

IMO HL 2 makes a mockery of HL 1, it's that good. I'm just giving
these guys the benefit of the doubt, but I honestly think there isn't a
snowball's chance in hell that Halo 2's single player will be better.
But it's apples and oranges and when I review Halo 2 I won't even make
the comparison. But as an FPS nut who loves console and PC, I can have
my personal opinions.

Doom 3 and FarCry are garbage compared to this. Doom 3 more so. I
really wish I could tell you why, but you'll have to wait. Once the
reviews start coming out you'll get a better picture.
SPOILER: (highlight to read)

The ant lions are amazing. Did you know they can fly? : )

I can't really say much about it yet, but it's good stuff. And a
very clear indication that either HL 3 or a series of expansions are on
the way.

Interacting with the environment is amazing. The sheer imagination
in the level design, events, surprises, and discoveries you make as you
play is amazing. The AI of friends and foes is amazing. The pacing, and
variety is amazing. Ditto for characterization, visual effects, audio
effects, music, level of difficulty, everything. It's like Stanley
Kubrick made a videogame and obsessed over every detail. There's not a
whiff of commitee anywhere.

I'm a total HL 2 fanboy now. You're right in that Halo 2 "could" be
better (of course if I already played through the final game i couldn't
tell you), but here's the thing: I play most every FPS in existence and
I have never, ever seen anything remotely close to Half-Life 2. Not
even. Let's say I haven't played Halo 2 yet. I'm still in a position to
say that its single-player would have to be absolutely fscking nuts to
beat HL 2. But the whole argument is pointless. You'd be stupid to
overlook either game, and until the Source mods start rolling in, Halo
2 will have the sicker multiplayer anyhow.

Define 'better'! Halo 2 could be more fun, with seemingly better vehicle battles and obviously better deathmatch from the onset  but perhaps not so "technological" and involving as HL2.

There should be no doubt as to which will be better. That doesn't mean Halo2 won't be a great game though.

Ill agree with you, I believe that HL2's gameplay be superior to Halo 2 because the interactivity of HL2's world will be more than what Halo 2 will be.

But before I continue Ill say that I need to play both games before I judge them correctly, ill just say that im more bias to HL2 than Halo 2.

No you are not. I personally thought Halo was great, but better than any other major FPS that came out around the same time? No way. Halo is great the same way Goldeneye is great, they were on consoles, showed FPS could work with a controller, and were alot of fun despite their limitations. However, anyone who claims that Halo was better than HL or UT or Q3 is insane. In any debate all I'd have to do is point at Halo's level design and win by default.

As for a comparison between HL2 and Halo2, there isn't one.

I enjoyed Halo a whole lot, but its certainly not all that a lot of
people make it out to be. I've been in too many Halo arguments to
really care to be in another though, so I'll leave it at just giving my
quick opinion  It was a breakthrough for console FPS's though,
despite its shortcomings, and was visually astounding at the time.

GB lets not go that far to say HL1's gameplay was better than halo's cause it wasn't.

Yes, Halo had stunning gameplay that you could enjoy while running through identical gray square rooms and retracing your steps constantly.

Halo Game play = Tedious and Ridiculously Repetitive, yet fun at times.
Half-Life Game play = Awesome. The difficult parts make you want to play more.

I think the main difference is, I can recognize an area of the game from someone else describing it. With Halo, you'd have to describe what the mission was, because everything looks the same (for the most part).

HL had more variety and it took place in a facility. What is Halo's excuse? it had at least two planets.

As for a HL2 vs H2 contrast. Come on. Halo 2 looks almost identical to Halo 1, except, you're in a human city.

HL2 looks nothing like HL1. There are similarities, but, only things that worked well in the first game.

If anything, Halo 2 looks like a supped up expansion pack.

But, seriously, Halo is fun ... in small doses.

Uhh... Halo all took place on the single ringworld, you know, hence the game's name. And a big part of the game was going back through the areas you'd already been to. The gameplay itself forms a 'halo,' if you will, circling all the way back to the Pillar of Autumn itself. Ok, maybe I'm stretching there... but it's still reasonable.

I think if they'd used fewer featureless textures, it would have looked much better and left room for much more variation. Unfortunately same seems to be true in Halo 2. Imagine those spiffy architectural bits with some real texturing on them, rather than the bland grey generic stuff.

Also, you can't expect a full-on graphical overhaul for a game on the same platform. There's only so much you can do beyond the first game without getting a next-gen system (one of the biggest advantages for developing/playing games on the PC right here). I think they've done a decent enough job making the game look better than the first, which given the above is a tough job to do.

I always wanted to play Halo. But then again, I don't have an Xbox :dorky: It did look much better than the PC Half-Life (the PS2 HL is somewhat arguable). But did Halo have any kind of "presentation" to it? It wasn't just a fancy Quake2? Right? RIGHT?

KFS, I wasn't talking about graphics, the gameplay looks practically the same.

I mistook the beginning of the game for a planet, I forgot that you're just on a ship. .

And technically, because the game does take place on a mechanical ring, that's not a planet. Just a really big unnatural habitat, or there could be some funky theory in the game, I don't know I haven't played it all the way through.

GB: No, as far as I remember, Halo had a pretty decent story for the most part. I think the game was rushed for the Xbox launch so they didn't get to do everything they wanted. If you really want to play it, just play it on your computer. Just remember to turn VSYNC ON, because the models are at 30fps

Or because the poll was hosted on a HL editing site.

KFS made a great point in one of his post, and I am not saying this just because he is KFS. :kitty:

I have noticed that many PC players say HL is better and many console players say Halo is better. I have an advantage on the view being both an intense console and PC player. I am EXTREMELY excited about both games and will have a hard time which one I want to play the week I am skipping school.

Halo and HL are both amazing games and I still play both of them. I think we are lucky to have two such great games and then have their sequals come out the same year. Plus if you don't like one you got the other, and if you don't like either one then you need to be submitted into a psych ward. Halo and HL are both very original games and anyone who says Halo is a big cliche should take a look at their own maps. Once AGAIN like KFS said Halo takes place on a freaking ring in space. How cool is that. Anyways gotta go finish beating StarCraft for the 2nd time another great game.

Everyone seems to be concentrating on the single player portion of the game, when the real meat of the game was in the multiplayer, that is where the game shined. When can anyone remember playing a 8vs8 war that could last for hours? And no one say UT because its not a console game (except for the lame x-box port which wasnt that great either). And I dont care what anyone says, cause Halo was a great game, and the actual HL2 vs Halo2 is really anyone's game, it just so happens ill be exploring HL2's world while Halo 2 is released.

Halo shined only in coop mode. That was seriously awesome.

But I will settle the argument between HL multi and Halo multi with another simple response: How bout that level design?

Seriously, would you rather play Datacore or that stupid one hallway level? Bounce or Hang 'em High? Stalkyard or Rat Race? Would you even want to play that lame teleporter level? The greatest gameplay in the world can't overcome crappy level design. The only good map is Blood Gulch, and that's a CTF map for crying out loud.

The thing I noticed about Halo is that, in multiplayer it's more fun to do s**t with the vehicles then to go around endlessly killing/getting killed respawning and running back accross the map to do it all over again.

My friends and I always play chicken and with the Warthogs, then like cheating f**ks they jump in the tank ... bitches.

Sidewinder, Blood Gulch, Rat Race, Damnation, Cool Out, and Hang 'em
High are all wonderful levels. I guess it depends on how many people
you play with - I suppose anything would be entertaining in a 16 player
