Deadlock is a Half-Life 2 mod now in development. If you have mapping experience, texture experience, model skinning experience, or other valuable skills, please drop us a line at mailto:team@deadlockmod.com.

Please send screen shots of work you have done in the past. If you don't, our first reply will be "please send screen shots of work you have done in the past".

We (your adoring public) know next to nothing about this mod. And
your website doesn't help much either. Basic information, like
single-player or multi-player, isn't even there. All I see are a few
unskinned model renders and some news posts. Please put more
information up so people can make a decision to join or not.

And please respect our forum members more in the future. You are the ones who are coming and asking for help, not us. Thanks.

Man - what the hell us up with people in this forum? When I registered I missed the part where it asked if you were an elitist ass-hole. If you want to join a mod team, email us for details. If you don't, ignore us. It's that simple.

I am not trying to be a prick or anything and I will be the first to
admit that I am not the most talented person. But I have been on the
modding forums for over 5 years and I know what kind of jerks and smart
asses post replies.

I dont really care if I piss anyone off... We are looking for people
who are serious. So if you are serious then you can email us and we
will discuss the mod in private. We are not ready to publicly tell
everyone our ideas just to get them ripped off.

DigiChaos: If you've been around the modding block, you would have noticed that very few mods actually get completed, and of those that are completed, very few are actually good.

There's a lot of talent here, and with the right attitude, you'll easily get people to work for you. Please, don't expect people to jump at the chance of working for a mod. Most people here have already seen the fate of mods that start of with enthusiasm, but dont get too far. I'm not saying this will happen to your mod, but lots of folks want more data of what exactly is happening before they are willing to commit.

Take this as you will, but I intended it as just a bit of advice. Your ideas usually won't get ripped off by anyone, so at the very least you need to give people a storyline.

What we have now is very little. You have model renders, and a general Urban Conflict setting. But people need more details. Is it single player, multi player, or both? Is it team based or deathmatch style? Does it have something unique? What, exactly, is unique? Do you have a clear plan of development for the mod? How big do you expect this will be? When do you realistically plan to complete?

Please, most smart asses who post have a valid reason for being smartasses, and the actual smartasses havent even started posting yet.

And we're not trying to be a prick collectively, either. It's just that we get quite a few people who flit in here and post things asking people to join mods, and it's really quite hard to determine if you want to work on a mod without recieving ANY information on what the mod actually entails.

However, if you were to first post something along those lines (the bit where you say we can get information if we email you) earlier, then things would have been more kosher.

Plus, Orpheus's post was something that you may not know about- it's a tiny little thing called "humor." No, I don't find it to be funny, either. But give the guy a break. This is a public forum. As they say, water off your back, man. Let that little thing slide. Don't retort with some comments saying that he's a smart-ass and that we're all elitist bastards.

Yeesh.

Out of curiosity, on your site you say "past works: CS_Italy mapping" -
by this do you mean you made cs_italy, or something else?

Sorry I was away.
So you guys created cs_italy... do you think you could have made it any more slanted towards the terrorists? I mean sheesh, three good autosnipers can hold down all three paths and the CT's are screwed unless they get some lucky shots off or enough people take bullets to force them to reload. I hate that map so much  (except for the close combat fighting in the middle path though the house, that's just sweet)

glenc,DigiChaos

sadly, this all started from a joke. is it really us? i wonder.

i read through all the replies, i am proud of the camaraderie, but sad that it was necessary as well. perhaps we should add a line or two on the membership pages about our mods, or rather our mods history, and new members part in them.

newguys, shut up for a couple days, read a few dozen threads, get to know us, then return with an attitude befitting snarkpit, and the members you may want to recruit. we are not elitist, and i would be the first to drum one out of here if i noticed them, but on the same note, we do not like narrow minded asswipes either whom think their idea is somehow original, or worse, the first to show up with it.

with the talent around you, do you think for a second you could come up with an original concept when "urban" is the theme????

on the plus side, we have seen a couple mods work out, yours may as well but quite honestly i do not.. you cannot even manage the recruiting stages which are admittedly the easiest to handle.. coordinating a team through the stages of a mod will truly strain your patience.

one last note, i can survive your ridicule far better, than you can survive the collective snarkpits. PLEASE rethink your attitudes, you are in our home.

for what its worth, welcome to the snarkpit.

I'm no elitist, neither is Orph, far from it, but when people decide to
join a mod-team, they want to spend a lot of time to it, don't they ?

I don't want to spend a lot of time on a mod I don't even get the basic
info from. It puts me in the risk of devoting to a project I don't
really like, you see ...

And that would be bad for me, and for the mod team counting on me.

I really don't see how anything here was trolling, but you're the boss. I also don't see why this mod shouldn't be looked down upon, given the fact that there is no information about it on the website, all they have to show for it are a couple of model renders, and once again we have some overused theme that will inevitably lead to tactical combat in an urban environment with counterstrike weapons, with a focus on realism. I mean Orph's post was making fun of their tired and overused theme, and the first thing they do instead of trying to explain or differentiate themselves from all the other mods they start calling people assholes and such. Why exactly would we want a forum that fawns over whatever bulls**t mod comes around the bend?

1)can someone explain the term "trolling" for me?

2)and how my replies fall into the hypocrisy end of the discussion?

i realize thats a 2 part question, but i really wanna know cause i thought i was very generous considering how the thread degraded so rapidly.

its obvious these guy's don't know what true elitism is, and they also doesn't seem to know that we do high level map critiques, hence the title "Master"

it has been my experience that elitist are anything but masters, more monsters than anything else.

still i want a definition to my two questions, before i misunderstand and decide that i was just accused of something. :/

Trolling is posting with the intent to piss off people and starting an argument. Deliberately taking an unpopular opposing opinion just to start s**t is trolling. Insulting people can also be considered trolling.

sighs I don't have a problem with people asking for more information or whatever; I agree this mod does seem to have the typical noob-style "we'll give you more information later but right now it's SECRET!!!1" description (in particular CJ I wasn't attacking you in any way). However, I DO get annoyed when certain members take the "oh look at my experience" attitude or somehow imply that an attack on them is somehow against unwritten forum rules... Perhaps trollism isn't the right term, but I am getting worried at the elitism that is slowly forming here

all i can say is, in times past this thread would have been locked already due to poorly thought out replies, and innuendo's. this thread went better than could have been expected, had timely intervention not occurred when it had.

most, if not all the replies were positive, yes they had some negative content, but dammit, even when discussing tumors one cannot be all rosy about the diagnosis. its expecting a bit to much to handle every new member with kids gloves, especially when they take the first poke at someone.

its also expected that a certain amount of defensiveness will occur, after all we have known each other for years. i fully expect that each of us can cope, and defend ourselves if need be, but most times it speaks 10 times clearer if others do it instead.

lep, i know you mean well, i know that you must take a stand, and yes it speaks mounds that you are defending the new member, but sometimes its best to let them swim or sink.

i will add, that if my term "Master Critiquer" is considered by majority to be an elitist title, i will lose it in a second.

most of you know, i tack on the title master off handedly to many people, because i truly feel they deserve a tiny bit of recognition.. fishy-master modeler, lep-master webmaster, gollum-master mod programmer, KFS- lucky son-of-a-bitch-level-designer-master

as i said, i apologize if my joke started all this, but i shouldn't HAVE TO

honestly, i think these two dug a hole, its up to them to decide if its to big a hole to fill, or move on.

another thing you need to consider lep, you are never going to dissuade us from uniting against a perceived threat.. as you said earlier today, learn from your mistakes.

/ 2 cents.

okay, just to add insult to injury. my 2 cents... :heee:

i too have detected a bit of arrogance among quite a few folks around these parts in the past few months....(just because i didnt post every day as i used to, doesnt mean i didnt do a spot of reading from time to time.... ) i remember the days not so long ago when i was asking all the noobish questions and was pestering and certainly annoying and.......noobish. but i had a leg up on most of the rest of these guys, because of my background...the humility was the reason i kept coming back, because i felt "comfortable" asking "the noobish questions"....

so its another mod with the same ole criteria and the same ole setting.....big deal....handle it like we used to and we may run across our next NS, or kfs, or reno or finger or orph or mikee or, or god knows wht other super talented mapping God .....to those i didnt list, my apologies...you know who you are... :heee:

leps right when he says the "tone" is changing.....whether it's "elitist" BS is a mute debate, imho

orph's been orph since orph BECAME orph.....and imho, hes one of the most consistent, and honest, and sincere folks around here, with a dry sense of humor to boot.....i like him... :heee: ......and ya get "his neck up:, ya know what to expect......yes?

so, now that ive run my tab up to a quarter, i leave us to ALL ponder our behaviors, like any DAD would....

comments?....

I would have to second that thought......

also, i think perhaps, well maybe we should just allow this thread to die before someone begins burning flags in effigy, or worse, someone accuses someone of doing so.

i have detected a certain amount of hostility, i have voiced my concern of it as well, but i must say i detected little or none in this thread. all i really detect is a s**t load of false guilt, none of us should be shamed into saying sorry, or even inquiring that they may have crossed some line.

HL2 is out, the boredom should dissipate IF ITS ALLOWED TO!!!

no one was wrong enough to be made to feel guilty, even the new guys.
and doc, wipes sudden increase of eye moisture thanx.. it means more than you know.

It is pretty obvious at this point that this approach was all
wrong. From now on we will contact people instead of trying to
reach out to the community. We currenly have enough members to get our
gameplay testing done.

Leperous, is it possible to delete this thread all together?

not completely wrong but the approach was questionable.

that would be worse still, you would be invading their privacy by doing so

and thats good news, in spite of the fact i wish you the best of luck, i also feel you are going to need far more help than luck will give you.

after all these pages, and some of the most helpful advice i have seen come out of this forum for days, you learned almost nothing of how, or where you went wrong.

how do i know? how am i so sure? well.. its this sentence
instead of trying to reach out to the community.
this sentence side shifted your responsibility back onto the people you were asking for assistance. this community is tough, but as fair as they come. they might still cut you some slack, but blaming us for things, is not persuading them very well.
good luck with your project.

Both parties need to stop stoking the fire. There is a lot to be said for a flat response in terms of repairing diplomacy.

DigiChaos, I see little point in deleting the thread myself, but if you
want it gone you have to get glenC to ask - or turn it into a humongous
flame war, then it will be deleted

Well this is rare, a mod-help thread that went into flames in the first... hmm.... one post! Is there a forum where this kind of thread is normally well received?
