i've been working on this for a couple of weeks now, and it's starting to take shape not too badly. at least i think so. the thing is, i've never tried to make a dm map before, and tbh, i've not really played many dm maps either. so i'm just trying to do the things i feel are important. like making a decent network of routes, so there is always a good choice of where to go etc.

i know there's not too much can be said from hammer screenshots, but thats all i have 'till it's ready for a compile.(maybe a week or two)

in the meantime, any comments would be gladly accepted.

Seems fairly good to me except you sewers texture dosent match. Looks kinda ugly to me actualy. Only an opinion though.

[edit] thanks for re-adjusting your images.

Looks very nice to me. I especially like the underground ceilings

You've made one big mistake though - you have not compiled! Even using a temporary big box is better than nothing.

cheers guys.

as soon as it's playable i'll post a link. and i'll be looking for some suggestions for weapon placement etc. i've not played much dm, so i'll definately need some guidance.

one more thing. as most of the textures are from tfc, should i wadinclude them for a hldm map?

I dont think you'll be able to wadinclude the whole tfc wad as its to big. What you can do however, is get Wally and create yourself a texture file. Then, open up the tfc wad and just copy/paste the textures you are using into your new .WAD file. Then save your new wad (I use the same filename as my map) and wadinclude that. That way, you only include the textures your actually using. Mind you if your using ALL the tfc textures, just wadinclude that, but I doubt thats the case.

^ Ignore that. -wadinclude only compiles the textures that your map uses into the BSP. You should definitely -wadinclude them.

Apologies Wild Card, I didn't intend to sound mean. It's just that your advice was...well....wrong.

Really nice map. Sort of reminds me of Zelda: Ocarina of time. I really would like to see the compiled sewers shots, as those lights could prove really effective. The cliff texture looks a bit repetitive on the second screenshot, but otherwise great. I like the way you've done the bridge.

Looking pretty cool so far, but as Gollum said, compile often. I couldn't imagine not seeing my map ingame until it was nearly complete. Its so much easier to test it frequently, lets you weed out parts you don't like when you make them, rather than having to go back and change it much later on. Also, what if you have made a leak accidentally every 30 minutes or so. Compiling often means you might have one leak to fix each time or something, which isn't overly time consuming, but compiling after a week of mapping could come up with 10 or 20 of them, which could take hours to patch up.

Anyway, thats just my thoughts, the map looks good regardless. Oh and with rock textures it is always advisable to scale them up to 2x or more if its a large area, they tend to look terribly repetitive (as in your screenshot) if you don't. Lowers r_speeds a bit occasionally too

Wild: Using -wadinclude just includes textures that have actually been USED from the wad, not the entire wad. So if you used 3 textures from tfc.wad, then doing a -wadinclude would put those 3 textures into the BSP, no more.

i compiled the top half of the map to have a little run-around, and to see if i could find any obvious probs. there are one or two ( or maybe 3 or 4  ), but nothing that i didn't expect.

i reckon it still needs some work on the lighting to create some more contrast. much purdier than in hammer though.

most of what i done since the hammer pics was to seal off the top section, with very little being done to the actual content of the map, so the repeating patterns etc. are still there.

OH MY GOD!, Thats a nice looking map all compiled..

Is It ready for download.. I must run around in that!

Great work! From the first pictures the only thing I saw that was a tad off was that one corner of rock below a building.. it didnt have the same flow as the rest. It was just cut as an indent, and it didnt feel right. ( *note: from the very first picture in the first set of pictures ) But it looks like you fixed that, Im not crazy about the long arrow look you went with though, its not natural. But it still looks good.

If you need any ideas there was a map that looks kinda similar to this released for the PHL map comp called Olvidada=Muerte. Not that it looks like you do need any ideas... it looks great already.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the light_environment should be set at a different angle?

Map looks very nice, but the light angle really jumped out at me.

Shouldn't the side of the building have some light on it (in yellow)

The angle of light should be from the moon (in red)

yet, the shadows seem to be coming from a light source somewhere else (blue)

no Doc, it's not just you. it's out by 5-10 degrees in 2 directions. but even being that close was a fluke. 1st compile y'see. it'll get tweaked with each consecutive compile until it's right.

A_S, as it stands, the r's r higher than i would like. in some places they're hitting 1100. i really dont like that, so i'll be trying to get them down a bit in the usual way. but i might also have a go at making some of the small detailed bits as models. all depends on how much face splitting is playing a part in the r's atm.

MS, it will be soon.

Fishy, take a look at this TFC map which uses many of the same textures to get some ideas.

Pretty. Your glow sprites are too bright, tone them down somewhat. In my opinion, the glow is just to enhance the light's appearance, not to draw attention to itself.

Looks sweet! Only complaint I have from the shots is the lack of detail on the lightly colored building in this shot... could use some variation for sure:

at last, i now have something that compiles as a whole. there are no weapons or health to be found yet, the texture alignment/transition sucks in some (only some?)places, and the odd corridor/room is still makeshift. large sections still have some pretty dodgy (if any) lighting too.

hehe, sounds good, eh?

Ok whereas others are very kind, I can (rarely be rather ev0l D:~~~)

Personally, although this map looks kinda ok, it is very boring and "ordinary". I think the lighting needs a good angle (the sky is fine) but you need decent textures. The textures your using are CS and TFC standard- ie. UGLY!

Change to some cool textures, more contrast (i.e. less bouncelight...)

Also add some little extras, some cars... To think critically, think this- Would this place actually exist? Add stuff to make it look real.

Since when has TFC been realistic? That's half the fun of the mod...

Looks nice, although as Myrk said, it looks kind of "ordinary" and there's not really anything to make it stand out from other levels done with a similar theme/style.
