I can think of another place HP uses non-metric measurements - when
Harry is being "fitted" for his wand in book 1, the wands are measured
in inches. And that definitely was in the UK edition.

Miles for distances and pints for beer (though, confusingly, not the
same size pints as used in the US) are still standard in the UK. Inches
are still pretty widespread in non-technical uses, though I can't speak
for people younger than me (who probably didn't grow up with both
systems being used).

I have haven't even read half the book yet but I figured as much
without this spoiler. It's enough to hear all those people crying "OMG
you'll never believe who dies!" to get suspicions.

And risk having a guy with a strong irish accent tell you the story

(it's should be out by 2030  ).

Silly, they have to make one movie per year to attempt to be "in time" with the books. I doubt it will be anywhere near 2030.

However, why is it you can type English, visit a predominantly English speaking website and yet, spoken English is mumbojumbo?

Do not written and spoken go hand in hand? Hell, I always thought you could learn to talk it long before you wrote it. :/

<div style="text-align: justify;">I wouldn't say that they do Orph. I'm
not much cop are foreign languages, but when learning french I think it
was quite a bit easier to digest written words than spoken ones. Speech
has accent and it also dictates the speed, whereas with written words
you don't need to "keep up" or battle with somebody's way of talking.
It most likely does depend on the person a bit though, I'm sure some
find it easier to pick up spoken words than written ones.

Strange. All I really had to deal with as a child was Spanish. I grew up in Phoenix and it was the second language of choice there. Speaking it was many times easier than writing it..

Oh well.. I was just thinking that since damned few member here are that poor in written English, I assumed that they had the rudimentary of spoken.. Accents aside, we can still listen and understand each other in other words.

I have listened to people from Germany, Scotland, England, The Netherlands, etc, etc, and all that really caused issues was the accent, not the words. Most slur words or speak gutturally.

Anywho's.. The audio book is available and I can point you in its direction.. Its up to you to want it, its not up to me to deliver it.

Snogging is a very common word in the UK, albeit not a particularly
nice one. I think its mainly a young teenager type of term - I haven't
used it (nor heard any of my friends use it) since I was 14 or so.

Oh, i've spoken english many times. But most of the people I came into
contact with either had an american accent or a pure english one.

That's what I like about german - Scheissdreck is pronounced
"Scheissdreck" and not "Stheissdhreck" or "Steissdreck" (although those easterners...bleh! let's not
derail this one as well).

just got the book today read three quarters of it in eight hours. it is really good. but what stumps me is the the dialouge - they are what sixteen in it? they certainly dont seem to speak like sixteen year olds. the dialouge hasnt really changed at all throughout the series i dont think. also i seem to be quite liking this voldemort this book doesnt really put him across as too much of a supervillan i think

Wouldn't work in the US, the term is already used in association with intercourse. Kissing has many terms and slang, but Snogging and Getting Off are not among them.

[edit] I just noticed something. Not a spoiler, its been throughout the series. The house elves can apparate within Hogwarts.. How?

Yeah, I can see that it would help them with their duties, but couldn't anyone turn themselves into one and go where they pleased? I mean, they have that potion that makes you look like others.

Is this perhaps an oversight on Rowlings part?

House elves' magical powers are far beyond wizards' ones, thus spells
which disallow wizards to apparate do not apply to house elves or any
other magical creature.

As you might have understood, house elves do not need a wand to do magic, unlike wizards.

You also have to understand, that polyjuicepotion only makes you LOOK
like another being (creature) but does not give you the magical powers.
The heck... if it would, I believe a lot of people would already have
turned into Dumbledore and done magic beyond their own capabilities

I think Rowling has thought about that, but atleast it's as I understand it.

part of my point, normal wizards seem not to have any spells that can kill of injure or be able to use any. when fighting with someone who is trying to kill you you should have a right to defend yourself adequately.

but maybe im just analysing it too much

I think R.A.B is Regulus Black who was a death-eater and was killed on
Voldemort's order. If you remember at the beginning of book 5 Sirius
and the rest of the lot came over a heavy locket no-one could open
while cleaining the Black House hint hint hint.

RAB could in fact be Dumbledore, who says his first name is 'Albus' that could be his middle name and the reason for doing the thing with Potter was part of an overall master plan.

Well I still think RAB is Regulus Black and that he hid the locket in the Black Family House.

Dumbledore, the genius, prattles on about how "magic leaves very distinctive traces" and then three seconds later he, oops, drinks an untouchable killer potion without any way of knowing it wouldn't kill him on the spot and then takes a trinket that apparently has no magical properties. Dumbass.

hmmm when I posed it I thought it might be a spoiler (look in my last
post). But there's also something else which I can't remember exactly
which couldn't be moved from there.

You said RAB was his uncle and I said it was Regulus Black, his younger
deceased brother who was a death eater. I just made the connection
between his name and the locket that Sirius couldn't open, locket that
he found whilst cleaining his place up. Not really a spoiler if you ask
me.

Hmm... indeed, that might be true... the locket might really contain one Horcrux.

But as for the others... hmm

I have a sense of feeling, that the other one might be hidden somewhere
in Riddle's grave... i am talking about Voldemorts dad. The place he
was reborn?

Wait a second... Room of Requirement! What if one Horcrux is hidden
inside the RoR!? Remember, when Harry tried to hide Snape's old
schoolbook (you know what I'm talking about) in the RoR, into a
closet-type of thingy, he saw something there! Couldn't it have been a
Horcrux? I doubt it is so badly secured, but why the heck not!
