With the summer dwindling away, uni starting soon, and a severe lack of parties this summer, I decided to take advantage of my parents jetting off to greece and host one of my own. With a decent turnout and nice weather it was all going nicely, although quite a lot of random folks were making appearances later in the evening. At 5.30 I finally got the last folks out the house and went to my bed.
The next day, cleaning up, it was discovered that two antique chairs were missing. We found the leather seat of one of them up a signpost a few streets away, and residents of the area responded to flyers we put through their doors to let us know they had found the remains of one chair, though barely recognisable as a chair, and taken it to the tip  This does not account for the other chair though, and unfortunately nobody seems to know who is guilty for the crime.
So far the police have been bugger all use, having taken a statement but not come to see what the chairs looked like (we have 2 of the set of 4 still in the house), taken fingerprints from the found leather section (perhaps thats highly unlikely to be done in these circumstances however), or apparently even looked into the matter whatsoever.
These chairs were really important to my parents as they had come from great grandparents and possibly even further back up the family tree. Its so utterly frustrating that nobody seems to know who did it, and I feel totally helpless at the moment. I know that there is very little I can do but does anybody have any suggestions on what to do? My parents get back on Friday and I think the least I can do to make up for what I've done is find who did it for when they get back.

Ack! Tough situation Reno. Hopefully, they didn't tell you "no parties". It's ashame that assholes out there have to make trouble for other people, especially when you are offering your house as a place to par-tay. Doesn't seem like there's much you can do beyond finding out who they are, and dealing with your parents dissapointment. I'm sure you've learned a lesson from this, and if your folks are good peeps, they will know that, and probably remember the crap they pulled as a teen.

Throwing an open party is always a gamble. I did it once with my bandmates, so we could jam in front of an audience in the small town we lived in. We took all sorts of precautions, like putting all the furniture downstairs and locking up the room it was in, wiring shut all the cabinet doors in the kitchen, and checking ID's at the door. I even put out about 100 aluminum disposable ashtrays (that actually turned out to be a great idea). All was going well untill some girl screamed. I ran into the kitchen to find our friend Tony knocked out cold by a bitter mountain man type who then proceeded to flip the bar table upside down and basically rampage throughout the house. We gave him the bums rush, finlly getting rid of him, but Tony's girlfriend had called 911!. So police and ambulances showed up and all hell broke loose. Kids started running for the doors and windows to get away. Someone jumped in their car and ran a police car off the road into a ditch, while simultaneously some brave soulr rifled the ambulance(looking for drugs probably) while the medics were up in my house reviving Tony!!!!!!. My wife (who was'nt at the time) worked for the local courthouse and informed me that the police were considering pressing serious charges against me and my bandmates. We were dismayed to say the least. Oh, and that locked room where the furniture was?, I found the door lock had been picked and my bed used for some kind of sexual encounter!!!!
People are not to be trusted in your home if you don't know them. That was a hard lesson to learn.
I'd say those chairs are gone for good. Perhaps someone from the party will snitch them out.

Figure out who did it, and I'll fly out and snipe them with my assassin
abilities. I'm still waiting for someone to put a bounty on Blue Ball's
head. haha, no pun intended.

Damn ReNo that sucks. I've no real experience with this sort of thing, but it seems like your best bet is word of mouth as I think has already been said. find someone who knows someone who knows someone... it's a long shot but I don't know what else to tell you. Good luck.

whats what I had to try when my friend's subaru wrx was stollen. It had
15,000$ modifications to the engine and a 7,000$ new stereo system.
Luckily insurance picked up most of the costs. I'd also like to point
out he bought it completely with his own money and he didn't have his
parents pay for it like 80% of the wrx's on the street are now. f**king
posers.

ReNo, if it's really important, I suppose you'll just have to ask everyone you know who was there that day even if it causes some trouble with your friends. Chances are, somone might vaguely remember seeing a "floating" antique chair or something. Friend of mine lost a somewhat expensive calculator in the library and we basically traced it by asking everyone we could recall seeing over there. We kept it up for a few days and it magically turned up in the lost and found section (which we had already checked earlier).
Ferret, I demand teh copyright charges!!!12

Eventually the truth will come out unless it's someone who no one knew. It's like this party I went to, a couple of people said I wrecked the toilets at this pub, turned out it was actually some other people and I was just drunk spewing up in the toilets at the time. Of course I couldn't remember crap, but the likelyness of me doing any activity apart from trying to sleep in the state I was in is slim lol.
As most people have said though it's down to word of mouth. If anyone had a camera at the party then check all the pics. If theres people in the pics you don't know then find out who they are. Make sure you're discreet about it all and get your friends to be too. That way it's just like them wondering who it is rather than being spies for you

I've made a list of everyone who I knew was at the party, and have been trying to get in touch with as many of them as possible to find out if they know anything, but unfortunately nobody does  I had one tip off on who did it, but investigating further it couldn't really have been him as he left the party with a fairly large group of folk, and they were the people who noticed a ruined chair at around 3am. Speaking to him he was really pissed off somebody had named him, as he thought they might be trying to set him up or something.
The best chance I seem to have is getting in touch with the person who named that guy as the culprit to see why he thought it was him, or who he heard it from. Thats a rather long process though, as I don't know him personally and will need to get his number from a girl I know's brother by the looks of things! My phonebill is going to be huge after this week, I've been getting phonenumbers for loads of folk from loads of folk...

ReNo, unless you plan on exacting some sort of revenge yourself, or know some large hairy people who are willing to do it for you, i dont see much point in pursuing it.
we all know that the police are more likely to ask if you hadn't seen the yellow pages advert than be interested in actually doing anything. and even if you did find out who was responsible, there's not much chance that they'll put their hands up to it.
it may be hard to swallow, but i think you'll need to put this one down to experience.

If the police won't do anything, at the very least I'd like to speak to their parents (though more likely MY parents would want to speak to their parents) to see what they plan on doing about it. If they didn't do anything, then who knows, perhaps the culprit would find themselves on the receiving end of a good beating from some large hairy friends  The fact is though, that this has bothered me so damn much that I can't get my mind off the topic, so I might as well actively try and find out who did it.
In a small but noteworthy update to the case, I got in touch with a mate of the guy who pointed the finger at somebody, and asked why that person thought it was the other person (its getting to the stage I need to assign fake names!). He replied with "Because its true - him and his mates smashed the chairs up outside your house, they even told me the next day." I really don't know who to believe, but this guy who told me that is a sound guy that I get on with, and I'm inclined to trust him. At the same time, it doesn't likely seem that the people would simply tell him...

He didn't see it happen, he just heard about it the next day.
He has just now given me the name of the guy who was bragging about it, so this is a major step forward. At long last another lead!

Shenmue?! DAFT?! I think I'll have to collect that bounty on your head now...
The joke is kind of about how farfetched and utterly logic-less the
game was. I mean, if your father was murdered by a Chinese guy, do you
walk around your local neighborhood asking about Chinese people or a
black car? It was just kind of funny and ridiculous with some of the
conclusions Ryo draws from the foundation-less testimonies of crazy
people. Oh, and the less-than-great voice acting was just the cherry on
top. It's kind of difficult to explain; anyone who's played the game
knows what it's like though. Great game, and the graphics were amazing
on Dreamcast. Still
beats out a good number of PS2 games too.

Yeah, it's a really cool game. Hard for me to really get into...but there is a lot of "normal" stuff to do. You can just tinker around like you live in Japan and that's about it if you want. Some of the characters are just hilarious.

The sequel lost some of the original's charm and world interaction, but ups the scale of environments hugely and makes you feel truly part of a large thriving city, and gives a somewhat more dramatic storyline. Pity they took out the cool forklift driving job - so much fun, and it introduced a proper job into a game without being overly monotonous or pointlessly simple.
