Terminator original was cool, Terminator 2 was not as cool, and Terminator 3 was craptastic.
How come movie sequels are always so bad, yet so irresistable?

Hrmm, I'll take the Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in Fight Club and raise one Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard in American History X, then two Johnny Depp's, one for Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and another for George Yung in Blow.

Snatch, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, and Boondock Saints are also favorites of mine. Oh, I also love Kevin Spacey in LA Confidential and Usual Suspects.

i measure actors by their ability to swap hats and do it convincingly.

few actors can pull this off to my satisfaction. a notable exception is whoopi goldberg, she can do any part, and have you laughing at the appropriate times, crying on cue, angry or full of pity with equal and unparalleled grace.

actors whom are stereotyped can still act well, and do an excellent job in their field, but never will they be in my top lists.

 I see we have similar taste in movies (/me looks at his own post quote)

One of the best movie character has to be Samuel Jackson in Pulp Fiction as the scripture-reading, veggie-eating, and gun-totting assasin who carries a motherf**king wallet.

Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" was quite memorable too, especially the orgasm scene.

if i remember actors correctly, i think the best performance by this woman was the movie she made about the female chopper pilot who was wrongly accused, then it turns up she was a hero.

this flick had me slobbering all over myself.

[edit] this flick was her best IMO.

Orph...I can't stand Whoopi, but that is besides the point. I too measure actors by how well they can switch roles and do it transparently. For this I have to say Robert De Niro is one of the best. That dude has been in so many different roles....and I'll bet you can't find ONE where he isn't believeable. He has been in comedies, dramas, cartoons (his voice), thrillers.....he has played all sorts of roles.

i am glad you agree, but cannot fathom why one would dislike whoopi.. i also find it odd that you pick one of the few actors i dislike. still we each share the belief of "how" we measure greatness
BTW, i was not asking for a clarification of why you dislike her, its unimportant.

The title of the movie is "Courage Under Fire". It's a decent movie, but nothing too memorable for me. She also played an alcoholic in "When a Man Loves a Woman" with Andy Garcia. Her dramatic roles just aren't as convincing for me. I prefer to see her in the quintessential romantic comedy roles (she probably hates to be type-casted that way though).

its an absolute must see if you have not done so already. i heard that jim did the movie with no money being paid to him. he liked the script so well, he offered to do it free. no one said he could do serious, so he set out to prove them wrong. he did well.
the movie, had almost nothing to do with jim. IMO it was one of his best, even though he did very little in getting it there.

I agree with 'Biopulse' on the Boondock Saints. That film is wicked. Also the main characters are 'Willem Dafoe' as the detective, 'Sean Patrick Flanery' and 'Jeff Danna' as the 2 brothers (saints). Also you got 'Billy Connelly' in there

shudders I hated that part.

I like Jake Gyllenhaal in Donnie Darko. That was good, but confusing. I
also have had a strange infatuation with Willy Wonka and the Chocolate

Erm, you guys, I don't know about you, but I think Pitt's performance
and overall character is way better in 12 Monkies then Fight
Club
.

Some of my favorite characters (Not movies mind you, in fact some of these movies suck):

Ron Perlman : Enemy At The Gates

Bruce Willis : The Whole Nine Yards

Hugo Weaving : The Matrix (Seriously, one of the best villians ever)

Keven Spacy : Seven

Brad Pitt : 12 Monkies

Jamie Foxx : Ray

Tom Cruise : Vanilla Sky (I don't like this movie, but I loved his character and his performance)

Ryan Renolds : Blade Trinity (Craptacular movie that I love, and he was the best part)

Daniel Day-Lewis : Gangs of New York (He stopped making Swedish shoes to play it for good reason)

Louis Gossett Jr. : Anything (Just an all around awesome guy)

Collin Ferrell : Daredevil, Tigerland (Both overly awesome, especially in the new DD scene at the Airport)

Kensaku Watanabe : The Last Samurai

Denzel Washington : Fallen, Glory, Training Day

Helena Bonham Carter : Fight Club

Jared Leto : Panic Room (Such an awesome actor)

Jean Reno : (Guess) Leon: The Professional

Brian Cox : X2, The 25th Hour, Rushmore

Bill Murray : Anything ever for all eternity

Owen Wilson : Bottle Rocket (Not the greatest movie, but his character is hillarious in Bottle Rocket)

Rip Torn : Dodgeball (Bye Bye)

Nick Nolte : Hulk (If you don't like this movie you can go f**k your self)

Jim Carrey : Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Peter Sarsgaard : Garden State

Clifford Smith : Garden State (So awesome)

And Many More.

What about his (and Jamie Foxx's) performance in "Collateral"? It's his best performance yet, in my opinion.

And Robert DeNiro in "Cape Fear"? That's a villain worth fearing for.

You should see Michael Ruffalo in "You Can Count on Me".

I like "Moulin Rouge", but no one particular character stands out as spectacular (even though there is a theme song called that).

Oh, I forgot to mention Adrian Brody in "The Pianist". It's a great movie, and he's so right for the role!

Oh, yeah, another
one (On the topic of Michael Mann films, minus the craptacular

better then his performance in Collateral (However, they're
both excellent)

Hugo Weaving as Agent Smith in The Matrix
Yeah! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Agent Smith rocked. At least he did until they completely destroyed his character and turned him into a stock villain w/ superpowers in the 2nd and 3rd films. The scenes between Agent Smith and Morpheus in the 1st movie were top notch. I could totally understand how he would think that humans are a disease to the planet, etc.

Brad Pitt truly is a good actor, but I can't call him my favorite because then I'm :sailor: . In Fight Club and Meet Joe Black he really had the demeanor of his characters down. That he was Tyler Durden in Fight Club really added to the image of the character as being someone with a lot of presence.

Edward Norton was born for Fight Club. That's not even an exaggeration. I've heard readings by him and have seen a few of his movies; nowhere is he as good as he was in Fight Club. His demeanor, his voice, and his tone were absolutely perfect for the Narrator.

Helena Bonham Carter was okay, but considering she looks like a beast it's hard to believe that the two main characters went for her. I suppose it fits with the theme and all, but still.

Brian Cox : X2, The Fifth Hour, Rushmore
You mean Spike Lee's 25th Hour? Good movie and great role
for him. The guy can do so many different roles, I'm surprised that it
was him half the time I see him.
Brian Cox is good in anything he does. He just brings so much to
the screen and is such a great actor. See him in L.I.E., it's an
amazing film and his role is scary and incredible. And don't get
it from Blockbuster because that's the edited version.

Edit: Also, Cassius, you're crazy man cause Helena Bonham Carter is hot stuff!

Not in Fight Club she isn't. But
they did that purposfully.

Mouse, seriously, Brain Cox blew
ass before like '86 or so. He was a terrible actor. Then
apparently something snapped and he became amazingly awesome and
talented. Dammit, I love him in Adaptation too.

"For
Gods Sake don't you DARE end your movie with a Deus Ex
Machina!!"

Oh, man, seriously Adaptation is one of
my favorite movies EVER. It's Charlie's best written work (yes, even
better then Eternal Sunshine)
I suggest it to anyone and
everyone. Also, it's the only movie I can think of that Nicholas Cage
actually acts in.

You know, I only recently discovered him and have only seen his more
recent films. I'll have to go to IMDB and check out some of his
older work. He's one hell of an actor now, though.

You're from the UK, you should know that Helen Mirran is a good actress.

Helena Bonham Carter is pretty good, she's in a ton of art films.

Kim Basinger was real good in Door in the Floor.

Audrey Tatoi (sp?) from Amelie is a good actress.

Sigorney Weaver as Ripley? C'mon she kicked ass.

Frances McDormand from Fargo is a great actress.

Naomi Watts, aside from being amazingly hot, is a great actress.
Just watch the audition scene in Mullholland Drive where she goes from
one character to a completely different one at the drop of the hat.

Joan Allen is pretty good. She was the mother in Pleasentville, in Bourne Supremecy also.
