Which is your preferred writing implement, and why?

I use gel pens, mainly because I don't apply too much pressure when I
write. Ballpoints require me to press harder than I find comfortable,
and that screws up my handwriting. I could use a fountain pen, but with
this I don't have to worry about carrying & refilling ink, or with
ink leaking out, etc. Plus, refills are easy to find and are quite
cheap.

This is only for writing, though. For sketching/illustration I use a
mechanical pencil with B or 2B grade leads (and a separate eraser). I
vote for Gel pens since I write far more than I sketch.

I think many of you are in occupations requiring you to write quite a bit, so this should be quite interesting

Don't know what kind of pens they sell in India but our ball point pens practically sling the ink out of their tops. Hell, most now days write upside down.

As to the poll, never heard of some of the options and truly, never gave it much thought, so I guess I will vote "Ball point"

Pencils for the win.

I use mechanical pencils. My writing is fairly messy, and I don't
like not having the option of erasing (yeah yeah, pen erasers) and
unless I have to (teachers forcing me) then I don't use pens.

Mechanical pencils are #1 in my book since they force me to write slowly (and thus pay more attention to the stuff im writing).

I don't find myself writing by hand a great deal these days, which
means the type of writing instrument I use on those odd occasions
doesn't really earn much thought. Typically I use whatever is to hand,
and that will most likely be a ball point pen.

Mechanical pencil all the way! I love the precision of it, and the fact that you don't have to sharpen it. Also the mechanical pencils I use have a nice rubber grip that is easy to hold.

I'm not a very big fan of pens since you can't erase them.

I would choose Roller Ball and Mechanical, but pencils are better for shading etc, and because what I do is graphical, pencils (mechanical for that nice crisp line) are best.

I'll either use a ballpoint or a gel pen, speaking of which I should get some classy ones since school starts on Monday. It'll be a cold day in hell when I use a pencil (again), I'm to them as Elaine is to The English Patient...

I like to use a black ball point pen for writing. Just makes it
look better somehow. But when I draw, it's mechanical pencils all
the way.

Pencils. I use them every day. I sketch a lot and write down my idea's
often in a sketchy way. Also, it's number one thing on school. Most
lessons are either boring, or things I already know, so I take the time
to think out idea's or concepts or to sketch some stuff.

I mainly favor soft pencils. 4B and 6B, if that's an international term...

Yeah, for drawing mechanical pencils are too thin and the lead isnt soft enough. I love 6B.

I use blue ballpoint, because all my mechanical pencils mysteriously disappeared...

Yes. This is most definitely true. There is an international gang of
pirates, thieves, robbers and other generally-unscrupulous people who
keep stealing my pens and pencils

You know what the best kind of mechanical pencil is? I can't
rmemeber the name. I think it's Zebra. They're metal, with
a black grip thing, and gome with a pen. They've lasted for
ages! My dad has had his for years!

Best pencils ever.

I draw with mechanical pencils, but I spend most of my time taking
notes in class or filling out tests and therefore I use my cheap blue
ball (snicker) point pen. If I lose the pen it doesnt matter
since I buy a bunch at once.

I like fountain pens and all, but I always tare the paper when using them.

Strangely enough, I can use my fountain pen, which is a dip style.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Essays etc - Fountain pen every time, since I seem to be able to write a lot more neatly with it

Notes - Couldn't do without my gel pen. Does anybody else here use GTD
(Getting Things Done - David Allen book)? I find a gel pen is very
useful for the famous

where neatness is imperative, i'll sometimes use a pencil to write out whatever it is that needs writing, and only when i'm happy with it will it get a 'top coat' with a pen. then the pencil can be erased.

though mostly i'll just use whatever happens to be handy at the time.

I've favored mechanical pencils for a small eternity now, since like others have already said. They're precise and always sharp. I personally favor HB graphite for taking notes. Oh and I've had mine since the ninth grade and it still works like charm.

I need a new ribbon for it, but my prefered writing impliment is my
typewriter, simply for its old school feel, and the satisfying crunch
of the keys. It looks cool on cassette labels etc.
