Ive made a lot of maps for HL deathmatch and a few for sven - coop, but
im lacking feedback, is this due to having a low snarkmark count or is
it the fact that my maps may not appeal to everyone since HL1 is
old. (3rdly could my maps be bad)?

no they really don't.

They are mostly a sign of who's been here longest I guess.

Snark marks don't really show you as a person, just how long you have been on the forum along with your activness.

So don't worry, ill give seem feedback for them now.
What do i put here again? :(

Snarkmarks don't say much, except for who's being active and who's been here for a long time.

HL is indeed old, though there's still people mapping for it. Just not so much here. Also, you'll need to draw some attention to your maps. One way is to comment on other maps, so you draw attention to yourself and to your maps. You may also get some friends in the community, which is a great thing as you can learn a lot (and spam forums, of course  ).

And maybe your maps aren't great... but you can still get feedback if you're actively looking and asking for it. See it as selling a product.
Also, to improve, you can look at the maps from others, and see what people liked about them and what they didn't like.

Hi there!

While the exact formula that calculates the number of snarkmarks still remains a secret (only known by the dark owner Lep), it has to do with how much you are being HELPFUL on these forums: I've noticed that people who give useful advices on the map editing forums get a lot of these snarkmarks. I've been here for a few years now, and I've never hepled anyone with an editing question (cause I usually hang around the general section), and my snark-quote is still as low as ever....

Anyway, who cares about snarkmarks?...

<span style="color: lightblue;">What are these snarkmarks that you speak of?

But seriously, those dont tell you what
type of mapper you are. Just how active you are. Write some tutorials,
they tend to rake in the marks. But still wont mean your any more UBER
than anyone. We are all the same here.

I love these misinformed posts on what snarkmarks are.

Most points will come from tutorials, tutorial ratings and general interaction with the community on a "deeper" level.

They don't mean too much, but kudos if you have a lot - it means you
GIVE a lot to the community in terms of answers on the editing forum,
tutorials etc.

Leperous posted this regarding Snarkmarks in a thread from the 15th of January 2004:

<div class="quote"><div class="quotetitle">? quoting Leperous:</div><div class="quotetext">
Hiding it keeps people from bitching about it, usually, they just
'went down' as they're recalculated when you login or check your CP and
I probably changed the formula since then  Buuuut if you must know, make of this what you will:

SM = ceil((40*tutaverage*tuts) + (5*answeredqs)
+ ((posts+(5*topics)+(2*comments))*(userrating/5)) +
((mapratingaverage+1)*5*noofmaps) + (mapdownloads/5) + (profilehits/5))

So you can get quite a lot from writing lots of good tutorials and uploading lots of good maps, among other things

</div></div>

As for your maps, I think most people haven't commented because it
seems like you were just uploading them for cataloguing purposes.
Usually, people come here requesting feedback for maps in progress.

If I were you, I'd start work on a new HL1 map, and then come here once
you've got part of it done and create a new thread in the maps forum
asking for comments and help in improving what you have.

amen to that. As Kain and Gwil said, they're an indication to how helpful you are, so in that way they're great. But due to the many inputs, you can't really tell what aspect the person excels in.
...((posts+(5*topics...
and here lies the problem: basicly you can spam the living hell out of the forum to increase your snarkmarks.

So i judge people on their mapping profile instead.

Don't think you get one SM for every post any more. I think you used
to, but now you don't. You get for new topics and posting in the
editing forums, I think, and for posting correct answeres.

I got about 600 SMs for my tutorial.

You definitely don't get 1 SM per post. I have 1000+ posts and
this many SMs. I don't really map, so I can't get any that
way. But you know.. who cares.

that's because rating is involved. if that formula is indead the last one, and, say, you have a rating of 3, you'd get 3 SM per 5 posts. starting a new topic goes 5 times faster. Indeed this seems a lot, so it must have been toned down a bit. but i believe posts still count to some extent. There are other issues too. the map rating of some noob has the same weight as the vote of the more talented members. And indeed, who cares. i bet most ppl are looking at map profiles instead.

I thought it was one snarkmark per four posts, and that value was adjusted by rating, so SM = (posts/4) * (rating/5)

Ok, I'll explain snarkmarks, seeing as I was there when they were being coded.

Its basically a load of equations distorting other numbers to create snarkmarks. Submitting a map gets snarkmarks, getting a 5 rating increases the snarkmarks, each download adds to it etc etc

Also your own mapper rating is like a multiplier. Posting on forums does pretty much nothing to your snarkmarks.

Overall the snarkmark system is the best rating system on the internet. It takes ratings from you, how much you've contributed to the pit, and puts it out. Obviously no n3wb could instantly get more snarkmarks than an old timer with 8000 snarkmarks- they can't have a huge impact on the pit in a small amount of time.

Snarkmarks for the most part can give new members a general feel for the way members should/can/might be viewed as far as general usefulness. So, if a member has a crapload of marks, one can assume they have been a big part of the site.

Sadly, there are a few cases where this is not truly the way it works (many maps and nothing more) but generally, the marks do show who to turn to. If one assumes "high marks+long time member= high probability of reliable info"

On topic: I am kinda tired of my lousy 4800 SnarkMarks. The system is setup so that you are awarded scores/SnarkMarks for ratings on your maps. I am requesting that those who have seen/played my HL1 maps to go rate them so I can break this lousy 4800 mark.

I need two people per map. I don't really care if you score them all "1's" but score them something IF you played them of course. The system requires at least two members per map to qualify.

I am asking specifically those whom I have done a critique or two to take the time to download/look at/score my maps.

Thanx in advance.
