I was quite surprised to read in the Steam news that there's a new free weekend. This weekend. To say it in the words of Dr Kleiner: I expected more warning!
I might try it out this time! Enough bandwith saved for exactly this kind of opportunity. Anyone else give it a try?

No. I don't want to get too attached to a game I technically don't own nor plan on buying.

The free weekend begins at 1 PM Pacific Coast time July 7th (today)
Goes until the 10th at the same time.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

A wth, I'll give it a shot too. Might as well find out what all the fuss is about.
I'm not stingy, but as far as I know you can't buy DOD:S without being forced to shell-out for HL2 and CSS as-well (i wonder).

I didn't encounter any lag in the game (one server I was on died though, but s**t happens) but the game's frame rates were awful. At the atuo-recomended setting, I was losing frames left and right during play.
On a more trivial note, I found that the grainy effect that the game has made it hard for me to see anything while dead, and the vibrato effect that nades have made gameplay pretty annoying.

The download isn't that bad. It says 1 GB in the preferences but I think that included some HL2 content I already had so it wasn't much more than 400 MB.
btw I found fishy in my friends list but on his and some other servers my map differst from the server. Happens a lot
___________________________________
I played my first 2 hours and it's really a good looking and polished game. I'm pretty sure I won't get it though. It seems the only unique feature is it's over the top realism (FPS "realism") with slow movement speeds (only 3 seconds of sprint which almost feels "unrealistic"), weapons that don't hit s**t if you're not crouched in a corner and general a set of weapons that besides the usual rocket/sniper/smoke grenade cycle only differes in rate of fire and power. It's like CS mixed with TFC. I must say I found TFC has more to offer in terms of gameplay and variety. About 6 classes and 10 maps more.
Graphics, again, are beautiful though and you really feel like on a battle field which is a bit disturbing until you get a hang of the game mechanics and see the realism is nothing but a pretty package for your FPS playing needs. Maybe if you live in a german (speaking) country you're much closer to history which makes the whole "WW2's a game" thing a little more macabre. Some of the German voice acting actually has an Austrain accent ("Wieviel Zeit - Keine Zeit! Aufauf Stellung halten! Sehr sch?n ?bersetzt, mein lieber!") The sound is very well done, with echoes in the distance ect.
An interesting game, but I hope Valve will leave the realism line for TF2 and deliver something more gameplay oriented. And drop that annoying stamina bars. I hate them.

Yea I played those a few minutes ago. Quite fun.
I like the game, but $20 seems a bit too much.

@fishy: Until you told me that was a candle, I thought it was a wireless mouse for some reason.
@reaper47: I understand your gripes, but I still love the game. I think my enjoyment comes from the atmosphere and the polish. The gameplay mechanics aren't as varied as TFC, but the excitement I feel when rushing in to stop a cap at the tank in donner is pretty memorable. Also, I like the sprint system. It makes running from cover to cover while under sniper fire that much more intense, considering you can't fire back while sprinting, and if you miscalculate you can end up fatigued out in the open in which case you're pretty much dead.
As for the weapon accuracies and power, I find that it takes some getting used to, but pretty soon you'll be able to find which weapon you really like. They aren't such trivial differences. I think my favorite weapon had to be the US heavy assault type sub machine gun... can't remember the name now.

Phhft. After playing this game today and comparing it to the original DOD, I'd have to say this game is pretty bad. Bare in mind, this is my opinion.
1) Huge ass hud. One of the things that I liked about HL1 was that the the hud would shrink with higher resolutions -- I dislike huds that eat up half of my screen. Also, considering the size of the hud, Valve made absolutely useless things HUGE (such as the "who killed who" bar, (i,e: Player1 ---> Player2 ) while things such as the health bar and ammo bar are incredibly small and are hard to see.
2) I still can't tell the difference between allies and enemies. I know this all boils down to being true to WWII, but damn, I think it plays out quite poorly in game. And yes, I have the game set to render icons over allies.
3) The crosshair is useless. Even if I set it to maximum size, not only is it completely opaque (making it hard to see around) but it still doesn't accurately tell me where the bullets are going.
4) Attack direction. One of the things that I heavily relied on in the HL1 version of CS, was how bullets would make sparks and flares when they struck a wall. The amount of debris and s**t flying around in this game makes it almost immpossible to tell where a shot is coming from. To add, I don't think this game has any damage indicators. Also, the bullet hit sounds are extremely quiet. In half-life 1, when you were struck by a bullet, you heard a nice loud THUD. In addition, the screen would jar back a little -- in DOD, I hear a barely audible moan and thud, and the screen doesn't vibrate or shake at all.
I realize that every game has a learning curve to it -- unfortunately, I'm no longer willing to faithfully play a game I don't enjoy 1 hour or more each day in order to grasp it. This was essentially what I had to do for about half a year until I could easily paly CS.
I'd rather play TFC :/

I just had a go at it, and I'm afraid I liked it, even if only because
of the maps. I can't really understand why some people complain about
the realism,
the fact that you have limited stamina. After playing that accursed CSS
for so long, the fact that you no-longer see people bunny-hopping in
full battle gear is a nice breeze of fresh air. While I didn't find the
"hugeness" of the HUD that annoying, the crosshair on the other hand is
a tactical disadvantage when dealing with targets that are a fair
distance away from you. I found myself unloading tons of MG bullets at
a wall,
unbeknownst to me that my target had changed position earlier (MUCH
earlier). The maps
I thought look great. My machine doesn't support HDR (maybe it's for
the
best), but that doesn't stop the maps from looking great.
Another thing worth mentioning is that the DOD community is much
smaller than the CSS community and thusly somewhat more mature. I
played last night for about 3 hours on 2 or 3 different servers without
hearing a single "omfg fag" or "n00b camp3r haxx". Maybe I was just lucky.

True, but you can still bunny hop in CSS if you move forward, then
sideways, jump, forward, sideways, jump etc. Ok,more like a stoned
bunny, but still...

I so want to by DoD.
What I find stupid is that DoD costs the same amount as HL:ep1!
I wonder what I would rather by? 3 hours of "fun", with absolutely no new content or anything, just a few new maps (Most of them pretty much the same as HL2 anyway), or Dod: Practicly a whole new game, ALL new content, totaly new theme - and guess what? NO LIMIT to gameplay! I can play it for a million hours if I want.
And even for the same price I can get other stuff...Like "The Ship" (Something which looks great).
Conclusion: HL:ep1 is a total ripoff for what you get, for the same price you can get something much more worth your money.
Pity its too late for me to play this free weekend. But im soon going to buy DoD. Looks awsome (And I loved DoD1)

There's a lack of DOD:S maps still. Even in the few hours I played I felt like playing the same maps over and over and almost got tired of them. But it's true the texture and modeling work (and let's not forget sound) is A+.
I never thought of Episode 1 as a ripp off, though. They put a lot of effort in what's there (and 3 hours is the extreme speed-run lenght, I got my 5-6 hours of game time). After all it is short which cost Valve a lot of review scores, but I'd rather play HL2:E1 than something like Blue Shift or a boring lenght-streched Mission pack thrown out with little motivation and attention to detail. The commentary system is great a nice addition, too, although it will become a standard feature for future Valve games anyway...

Yeah, you have alot of true points. I agree about BS (Blue s**t/Bull s**t), BS was nothing like Op4 (Which pwned imo). I think HL:ep2 LOOKS AWSOME! I would much rather play ep2, but unfortuantly I dont want to otherwise I would fall behind and not know what is going on if I dont have ep1, and I dont want to buy ep1. I might buy DoD when its been alive for some time, with a good bunch of maps.

If I had the patience I would have waited for HL2:E2 (or E3) and buy it in a bundle. I'm sure I could save som 10, 20 euros for the pack and play all three in a row. Would be awesome.

It's one of the few times marketing actually interests me. There seem to be a least 2 persons in this small thread that are buying DOD:S now because of the free weekend. It must pay. I find it a positive idea anyway. For example I learned that it's not my kind of game and got a very clear picture of what it plays and feels like.
