I got the retail version at walmart. Does this mean I can't have DOD:s?

You have to pay $20.

Fishy, it does that for the retail packs too. If you own hl2 you can't buy the game again. However, it is ridiculous that if you didn't get anything over $55 you don't get HL1:S ... period. They don't have a purchase option for it.

Likewise, DoD:S should only cost $20 if you don't own hl2. (It's a mod, for Christ sake.) Besides the fact that the game simply costs more then any other game. $55 starting price. But ... they're not charging $20 if you want DOD:S .. they're charging $50 (You can buy a MP pack, which gives you access to everything that isn't the single player hl2 or hl1)

I don't understand how Valve made so much money with HL1 if they're doing this kind of stuff now. Because you also have to remember, when people buy it over steam 100% goes to valve. So ... you'd think those packages would be cheaper, right? (A good example is the Bronze/Base Retail package, they're $5 difference. Which is another thing that makes you wonder "wtf" about the CE edition compared to the Silver.)

I think the only thing they're really pricing fairly is Aftermath, if it is a full expansion, like they're saying, $20 isn't that bad of a price. (Taking that most expansions start out $10 under full game price).
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Crono- that's the sort of stuff i was talking about! it just seems kind of underhanded that they get 100% of the profits from steam, and yet the stuff is still so much. Steam = more money for ValVe and more hassle for Nickelplate.

personally i see nothing wrong with valve.
sure they charge more for games and such, but that is how business is conducted. more money for valve = an even better HL3.
even steam: when it f**ks up during an upgrade i still dont take my anger out on steam because i know it was probably something wrong with my comp. anyway ill stop now - i love valve because they make great games. (by the way what was wrong with HL2???)

Aftermath? it is a full expansion? it was supposed to be out this summer but does any one know anything about it? if you do please tell!

Andrei, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't work as its an online only game,
and as such there are validations that you wouldn't be able to pass
with a pirated copy. Unique IDs and accounts etc.

rival, just search any gaming site like IGN.com for information on
Aftermath. There are videos and screenshots and interviews and
articles galore.

Well I was kinda thinking of using it with my steam account, as the

admit that I'm wrong. Or even if you can tell me good reasons why they
DON'T suck.
1. STEAM

Bitch as you will, but the bottom line is that it is a brilliant system
to help keep track of all your games, buy/download products, and
distribute updates. That's right, the update thing is a good
idea
. Lot's of people wine about it, and I know that trying
to keep all of the customers on the same page, with the same versions
of the game is a bad move, but I still support it.

Granted, Valve has their problems. All companies do.
Granted, they got greedy. However, they are still an excellent
company that has helped the industry a lot.

Anyhoo, It's 4:30, I thought DoD was to be released at
3:00. I still can't download it. I'm upset. I want to
play. What gives.

About 5 minutes after I posted, I tried it agian. It worked like
a charm. I've been playing the last hour, and it's pretty god
damn super awesome.

Right now, my only real complaint, is that every f**king server has
1000 ping. I don't know if it's people who want to try to run it
at max, or people's machines aren't good enough, but almost every
server had ping through the roof. I got onto one server at 50
ping, and stayed for about 45 minutes. That was the best
one. God I lvoe avalanche

The problem with the high ping that you get is because many people have
issues connecting to servers so they just make listen servers at home.
Issues will be resolved but its gonna take time, just like HL2 and CSS.

Valve are a great team but their problem is hurrying their projects so
they can make their already delayed deadlines. And thats where all the
bugs and issues with their games comes from.

PATIENCE MY MINIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am a brilliant person who is perfectly capable of doing all these things himself. I can go down to a store and buy a game, If i wanted to wait an assload of time before testing one of my maps, I'd download the updates myself, I dont need it automatically. I can keep track of my own games, What does that REALLY mean anyway? it tells you what games are on your system? Who doesn't know what games they have installed. "Oh look, HL2! when did that get on here?!11"

My favorite part of Steam is being able to access all my purchases from
any computer. When my new computer arrived I didn't have to hunt
down all my CDs... I just downloaded the Steam Installer and began
downloading the games I wanted.

It's so convenient if you have a fast internet connection.

Played some pretty long sessions on both Anzio and Avalanche, and it
gets my seal of approval. As french toast mentioned, its pretty super
laggy just now, but hopefully the network performance will get
smoothened out soon enough.

I would just like to say that Anzio looks f**king awesome...I can't
wait until my 6800gt arrives back so I can test it out properly with
HDR and all

That was sarcasm. It's a good system. Keeping everyone on
track, with the same versions etc. is a good move. Maybe
my sarcasm is too advanced, but I figured it was clear.

Indeed Reno, the maps look awesome. It's a lot of fun to wander
around and remember the maps as they were in HL1. I was worried
they'd really f**k up the ports of them, and add parts that shouldn't
be added etc. etc.

My only real quarrel with the maps, is that tree in the middle of
Avalanche. Granted the Allies needed some cover when running
around that bend while I raped them withmy MG, but I just don't like it.

On that note, the Axis (can't remember what they started calling them) MG is frieking awesome. Total killage awesomeness.

I've got the exact same problem as you CJ, and its pissing me off. If
you check out your other Source games you'll find their all f**ked as
well. Once again Valve releases an update with a major game release and
manages to screw over a significant portion of the community.

Edit: Good news is it now works, for me at least. If you had this problem try now and it should work.

Yeah, I found out I had to unblock hl2.exe on my firewall (even though
it was already unblocked!). The HDR looks great. You really have to see
it in motion though, screenshots don't do it justice. As for the
maps... yowza. The amount of detail and the -giant- 3d skyboxes really
add up. I'm definitely moving away from realistic map-making soon, I can't compete
with this kind of stuff. :-P

Donner and Anzio are my favorite maps, visually and layout-wise.

So, uh ... you can see people's health, eh? Cool.

Just to add to the question mentioned ... two pages ago ... even if you get the entire game on steam it needs to be unlocked on the steam servers for your account. In other words. No, it wont work.

When CS:S Beta was going on, I got a key for Condition Zero from a friend and tried it out, it didn't bother checking the key, but it let me download and play (it locked it out later, since the key was in use ... and I got a face full of CZ and never wanted to play it since ... since it sucked balls), So, yeah, copying GCF files or something like that wont work ... for that you'd need a "fake" steam thing ... Huh? No, I'm not giving any hints... you're crazy ... crazy.

I wish I could play DoD:S ... but, it wouldn't run well ... I'm not paying another $20 anytime soon (I think, if I really explain my situation and point of view I could get a lowered price ... I'd be willing to pay about $5 ... Which I don't expect, but, I don't expect anything for free, but ... I've still shelled out more then most people here for the game and I don't even get to play it) ... and I have school.

Anyway ... more maps. I DEMAND MORE MAPS. Isn't there only four?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Yeah, there are only four maps. But damned if they aren't the purdiest
maps ever made, every bit as detailed and beautiful as the new
cs_inferno. I actually like the new layouts of Donner and Anzio better,
I found them much funner to play than I used to. However I hate the new
Avalanche, that used to be the funnest map, but its like they listened
to anyone who ever whined about how hard it was, and put all these
little sniper holes everywhere, as well as changing the layout and
shrinking the size. It also seems a bit too cluttered now. Apart from
that it was definately worth the wait, however I hope they add all the
old weapons soon, as I can't do without my allied carbine.

The maps they've re-done are the ones that get the most play on
official servers. Besides a couple of custom maps, these are the only
ones that clan leagues play.

The m1 carbine is still in the game French, I found it last night under the bazooka class, its their support weapon.

Andrei, I doubt we'll see that map anytime soon. It had a pretty poor
layout from what I can remember and it was a custom map, so Valve won't
be re-making it.

I loved that one that Andrie was talking about... dod_glider methinks.

AS, I know that the rifle is still there, but I enjoyed it being a
class of it's own. And the german Bazooka doesn't get the
greasegun, they get some crappy little auto-pistol.

But the bazooka class does kick some serious ass...

Ah, I think I've made a mistake there French. I love glider as well, I
thought Andrei was talking about that one which tries to recreate the
bunker thing is Saving Private Ryan. That map was pretty crap. Glider
is teh shiznit.

The new classes are a bit odd. The grease gun is completely gone (was a
US weapon, not German). The new German machine pistol is kinda cool. I
really don't like the whole big smoking nade thing now, they're so easy
to see its really hard to sneak attack people with them.

Apart from that I've been enjoying it a lot, its been a great break
from BF2, which is all I've been playing for the last month. (Speaking
of BF2, how f**king long does it take to advance to the rank of Lance
Corporal. I've been at it for weeks now and it seems like I've hardly
progressed).

Lance Corporal isn't that hard to get to. Going from 500 to 1000
isn't that big. Getting to Corporal is a royal pain in the
ass. I'm only at about 2800 (need 10k)

No it's not glider. Ahh, if only I could remember!!! Oh, the germans
could call in airstrikes on various fixed locations in the map.

Yeah, Corporal is the rank I'm thinking of, not Lance Corporal. I think
I'm at about 3800 now, and it seems to only be a third of the way
there. The gay thing is that you can only unlock weapons when you
advance a rank. I'm not looking forward to the prospect of trying to
advance further than Corporal.

If it isn't glider Andrei, then I think its the one I thought it was initially. In which case I stick with my initial comment.

Do you mean dod_charlie, originally dod_overlord, that is Omaha Beach from Saving Private Ryan? Because I love that map

Ah, forget it, it doesn't matter. It was removed from the later versions of DOD anyway.

Ahhh, so 'twasn't Charlie.

I f**king hate what goes on when two players rub against
eachother. It doesn't work! There's the same problem with
PoA... pissesme off.
