Recently watched

I watched Soviet film "The Man with the Movie Camera" (1929) recently,
as well as the French movie "The Rules of the Game" (1939).

I sort of understand how before its time the Soviet film was, but I
just couldn't stay awake. The French movie I very much
enjoyed. Some very vibrant characters and some great camerawork /
direction.

If you like older movies, I'd recommend it.

I had to watch "The Rules of the Game" for a film class about a year ago.
What a bunch of terrible people (which was the point)

The character Octave, played by Jean Renoir, 1/2 wrote and directed the film.

Just watched Serenity. Awesome movie.

It started out kinda slow, but after the first 10 minutes it picks
up. I think the movie did a great job of summing up the
series. The part I like the best was when there was a huge ship
battle between the allience and reapers and firefly was sipping through
them all. If it was Imax, I would have wet myself :smile: .

What the movie was really about though was a reintegration of military strength into the United States' foreign policy, as the emotional wounds of Vietnam were slowly healing. Military strength was again portrayed as sexual desirability. The enemy is faceless, vague and impotent. America is a set of elite fighters taking their divine crusade of democracy to wherever, whenever. Of all the movies I don't agree with politically, it's probably right there at the top. And it all happened in the middle of Ronald Reagan's presidency - what a surprise there.

Top Gun was a movie about planes. There was shooting and stuff, and missiles.

I know there was a dedicated thread about it, but I felt it prudent to
point out in this one that Final Fantasy VII - Advent Children is a
hugely entertaining film full of awesome fights. It is a bit lacking in
storytelling, but its really hard to care. Some anime society place in
Edinburgh are putting it on a big screen on Friday night, so I'm
thinking I might go along with a few mates and see if there are any
cosplayers - sexy, hilarious or tragic; any of those will do :biggrin:

Just watched the anime that comes with the film's special edition,
called "Last Order". It is pretty short - just 20 minutes or so - and
for people who are interested, covers the Nibelheim reactor incident,
and Zack and Cloud's history. There isn't anything "new" storyline wise
per se, though it does shed a little more light on it than the game
does. It's action is a bit silly and over the top, even more so than
Advent Children in ways, but for FFVII junkies like me its worth
watching. Its more of a link with Before Crisis, the FFVII mobile phone
game, than anything else really.

Just saw Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of a Murder" (1959) starring Jimmy
Stewart, and I have to say it was hilariously entertaining with some
vividly lovable characters (like the judge!) who just leapt of the
screen. Jimmy Stewart was so awkward it made my happy to see!

Definite recommendation to anyone who likes black and white films and feels like a few good laughs.

Serinity... kicked George Lucas ass. Go see it.

Been watching the US TV series "Prison Break" that shows on Fox on
Monday nights. Stupid over descriptive title, but its enjoyable enough.
The lead actor seems a bit wooden to me (probably done on purpose, but
it just makes the guy kinda unlikeable), though the rest of the cast
are pretty good. Its no Lost, Desperate Housewives, or 24, but its
another show to pass my time :wink: I'm such a TV show junkie these days!

I'm just curious, how does the import of TV series work over
there? It's not very common that we get European shows over here
(we tend to bastardize them instead of just importing them straight,
which sucks).

Remember Gatchaman? Oh wait, it was called Geforce here ... with the last episode missing.

Nothing gets ported here unless it's animated. (Probably, since it costs a lot of money to animate something, when you can just dub it) If it's really a good show, chances are they'll remake it. Like the Office. (I haven't seen it, but I've heard that they're remaking it)

There's not much too it really - if a show does well in the US, one of
the UK channels gets the rights to show it and airs it. We get a whole
lot of US shows and they make about about 90% of the worth watching TV
:biggrin: Desperate Housewives, Lost, the Simpsons, Without a Trace, Friends,
Frasier, West Wing, Nip/Tuck, Six Feet Under - the list goes on and on
:smile: In the UK there aren't really many "big budget" shows of the same
magnitude of US ones, and its cheaper to import them than try to match
them I guess. Prison Break isn't actually showing over here (neither
have any series of 24 past the second :sad: ) but where there's a will
there's a way :wink:

Saw Seven and Sin City again, and I still thing they're both brilliant.
Bought the Jurassic Park boxset as well; the 1st uis great, the 2nd is
unnessasary but still fun to watch (minus the ending bit), and the 3rd
is still slightly s**tty.

There's nothing decent at the movies anymore. :x I jus bought Shaun of the Dead, gonna give that a watch tonight.

Mirrormask is in limited release in the US right now ... that's worth seeing.

Jurassic Park 3 is WAY better then The Lost World. The Lost World has so many god awful parts. JP3 is really just ... funny. I would never pay money for either, which is why I just bought the first one. But, okay.

Shaun of the Dead: I love that movie. Sin City should have a new version in the next few months of each "book" with added stuff all individual.

Want good movies? Or NEW good movies? Like in the theater? Or New on DVD or whatever?

Watched a couple of films in the past few days, as a sale at HMV
prompted me to buy a few DVDs. Note there may be a few spoilers in
here...

Resident Evil: Apocalypse was pretty damn awful. I had hoped it would
be on par with the first film (yeah yeah, I liked it), but
unfortunately it didn't pull it off. As an action movie it failed
outright by having really badly done action scenes - fights had far too
many camera switches making it impossible to see any of the (badly
pulled off) moves properly, and the gun play wasn't at all stylish.
While the first film didn't relate to the games at all really, the
second just pisses all over the game references - Nicholai bears no
relation WHATSOEVER to the same named character from the game, Jill
just seems to act like a bitch through the whole film which is against
her friendly personality in the games, and the Nemesis turns good, dear
lord no! There were a couple of scenes that raised a knowing smile from
me - most noteworthily the one where Alice runs from a helicopter's
bullet spray into armed enemy, and then drops her gun so they don't
shoot, before falling down and catching it as it falls (awesome RE:CV
reference :smile: ) - but not enough to save the movie in my eyes. At least
it was cheap.

Tonight I watched Ong Bak after seeing it recieve so many glowing
recommendations, and while it was definately an enjoyable film, I can't
help but feel its overrated. Kudos where it's due as there were some
awesome moves in there, but his fighting style (while very cool) could
get a bit repetitive at times. In general there just didn't seem to be
as many "oh man!" moments during the fights as you get with some of the
other legendary screen martial artists. While it was certainly more
brutal and realistic than Jackie Chan's comedies or Jet Li's recent CG
laden movies, I ddn't find myself quite as impressed as I have been by
either of them in the past. Tony Jaa, while undoubtadly an amazing
fighter and athlete, didn't seem to have the screen presence of his two
big "rivals" either. Definately worth watching for fans of martial arts
films, but I think the hype led me to being let down a little.

Me father bought the 9-disc ALIEN boxed set uber mega super duper
thing. I watched the first one last night, and a bunch of
featurettes on it. Man, Ridley Scott is a genious... I loved it.

Great movie. If you haven't seen it, watch it.

I know I am repeating myself here, but I fear that you might be missing a GREAT movie. Serenity.

This movie does what the original Star Wars did. It sweeps in and shows the CG machine how to make a sci-fi, space adventure based on interesting, bold, character design...not special effects.

Go see this movie!!

Oh God, yes, RE:A is terrible. It makes the first one look like Gold, doesn't it? You could actually argue the first movie is good now ... Maybe that'd justify our fandom?

Ong Bak was just really refreshing ... I saw it in Febuary, I think. So, Unleashed or any of that stuff wasn't out and EVERYTHING was CG at the time, it was just refreshing. And fire-legs while fighting rock.

I still want to see Serenity. But I don't think I want to pay for it ... I'm just not sure why.

Ok, let me establish things here. I'm not a fan of TV based, or B level sci-fi. I've never been a big fan of StarTrek, DeepSpace 9, Babylon 5, or any of these types of shows. I never even saw the 'Firefly' series that Serenity was based off. When I saw previews of Serenity, it didn't get my attention, at all. The only thing that prompted me to see it, was the reaction some of my friends had to it.

That said... I LOVED Serenity. I would highly recommend going see this movie in the theatre, with the big picture and big sound. Trust me on this one, It's worth it. If you loved Han Solo, the humor of the original StarWars, and good ole fashion 'bad guys' who aren't afraid to be bad. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

Going to see Serenity tonight, pretty psyched. It's been ages since I've seen a really good sci-fi movie.

Also going to see either Appleseed: The Movie or Ghost in the Shell 2:
Innocence next week, as they are screening for a limited time in
capital cities around Australia. They both look incredible, and I've
really been enjoying Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on tv.

Both are okay.

Appleseed has the better plot of the two ... Innocence just pissed me off. It looks terrible, for starters. And what I mean by that isn't that there's bad CG ... but it's very obvious what is CG. It doesn't blend together well ... at all. On the other hand Appleseed is all CG and has a pretty good story, it's entertaining. GiS2 takes over half the movie to really get into the plot. There's just intermittent gun fights ... sort of. Over-emphasised slow downs ... blah, I thought it was terrible. The first movie was better ... and better then that is 2nd Gig. So, I'd suggest seeing Appleseed if you were to choose. Come to think of it I may got buy Appleseed if I can find it under $15 with the fancy metal case.

As for Ghost in the Shell 2 ... I wouldn't really care to ever watch it again unless it was edited to make a more coherent plot (The 'just music' version looks ...) As it stands it was just bits and pieces tied together with strings, up until the end, then it still isn't tied together well. And that's not called "mystery", as some people tried to pass it off as ... which is, obviously, BS, since mystery would keep you intrigued ... and give you a natural and unavoidably obvious truth at the end ... It was just a really simple plot wrapped in an overly complex structure. Kind of like the original, but they didn't pull it off ... At all. The ending feels so ridiculously forced. I don't know, the action is cool though. So, I guess that's a plus, but I hated the movie as a whole.

So, yeah, see both if you like, but if you have to choose one ... choose Appleseed. (They're both my Shirow anyway) If you want something that really looks amazing, see Steam Boy, the story and everything is okay, it just looks fantastic ... you just have to stop and go ... "That's CG?!"

Beat me to it. It was absolutely awesome, very much in the vein of Star
Wars type story and adventure. Easily one of the best Sci-Fi
movies/shows I've seen recently, definately better than War of the
Worlds. Hopefully it'll be a lesson for Hollywood, you don't need a
huge special effects bonanza to make a good sci-fi movie. A solid story
makes the movie, not how much you spend on the cgi. Five Stars.

I was leaning towards Appleseed. The trailers looked incredible, an
amazing mix of cgi and traditional animation. Unfortunately they don't
seem to be around long in cinema's here, and usually only in Dendy
cinema's, which show a lot of 'art house' films.

Actually, critics gave Serenity 4/5 stars. . .

However, the viewing public gave it 4.74/5 stars.

The movie is the second highest critic rating in the theatre right now,
the first being I believe constant gardener. But serinity has the
highest viewer rateing, somthing tell me a bunch of Serenity fans
stuffed the polls.

When you work at a theatre on slow days, it get very slow, especially if your the only one schedualed to work box that day.

Mixing? There is no mixing in Appleseed ... it's all cg. It's WAY more obvious when you actually watch it. But, they did a really good job.

I liked War of the Worlds. It's just another adaptation of the same story ... anyway.

You guys have your "post number" set higher per page, that's why there's fewer pages. Mine's 123, since it's set to 15 per page. If you have a slower connection, hint hint Underdog, you should set it to something lower than that, since less posts per page would be loaded (less avatars too ... which you can turn off anyway ... you could block images altogether)

Anyway:

19 pages: you're set to about 100 posts per page.
62 Pages: You're set to about 30 posts per page.

Toast, you were talking about that before, try lowering your number of posts per page (from the control panel on the site) and see if they load faster. It should, since there's less DB accessing going on.

The story, and animation, and humour was all perfect. You have
got to see this, it's hilarious. I'd say more about the movie,

I saw "Advent Children" and the anime short "Last Order" on a cinema
screen with a mate last night, and while it was nice to see it on a big
screen, the screen wasn't bright enough which left most of the fight
scenes impossible to decipher. Another problem was that there wasn't
enough volume - despite being in a cinema of sorts (organised by a
uni's anime society) it was left really quiet, rendering the soundtrack
almost inaudible and the speech and sound effects just loud enough to
hear. When you are at a cinema you really want to be blasted by the
sound, but here it was sorely lacking and it detracted from the movie.
Watching it at home was a far better experience, but it was a fun night
regardless.

As a special treat they were also showing the Appleseed movie at the
end, but unfortunately I had a train to catch so couldn't stay for it.
Shame really, since people are saying its definately worth watching.
Might pick it up when I find some money - my current expendable funds
have been decimated :sad:

Hmm, they probably placed all the speakers in a way that they caused dead waves.

I'm sure they just used loudspeakers or something: which is a bad idea. (That's what most schools have in stock anyway)

As for the brightness, they probably didn't seclude the area well enough ... or if it was completely contained, the bulb in the projector was probably going ... or something like that.

Something I doubt they took into consideration is that with more people in a theater ... the quieter the sound gets. Since, there's more bodies in the room. (or it should anyway)

Reno, find Appleseed at a second hand type place if you can. Then your purchase will feel worth it. It's currently like $20 USD ... not bothering to convert that ... so, that's really not worth it. Finding it used would be better :smile:

Anime in the UK is horribly priced - if you buy it first hand from a
normal entertainment store it WILL cost ?20, with the odd exception
such as "buy one get one free" offers during sales or whatever. Mail
order is a bit cheaper but since the Appleseed movie is new it will
still cost in the region of ?15 or so. I don't really know of anywhere
around here that does second hand anime, but lets face it, if money is
proving hard to come by, there are always "less expensive" ways to see
a film :smile:

On TV? You probably saw the old show or movie, which were both, if I'm not mistaken, made in the 80s. This is new, released last year.

And if it is the new version ... what kind of service do you have that allows you to see new anime??

Reno, Yeah, I figured. But, you know what? No need to bitch, because you get all the special edition games and badass artwork! Have you seen American game covers and packages? They're pathetic. A good example is Ico ... this is the American version:

Don't even get the option here. And if there is a nice big version of something that comes out, they only make a few thousand (Growlanser Generations. This may not be a good example, because Working Design games never stay around for a long time. Even if they are some of the best games)

Anyway, back to movies.

I just finished watching Back to the Future (again). Dammit. I love that movie, and its sequels. Even the third one (now that I've watched it again). I love all the impossibilities and the racial slurs and all the things that would, could, and never did happen.
