The procrastination thread gave me an idea. How many of you have
aquired an addicion to one game or another and what games. I'm
not just refering to "OMG, it's take over my life!!" but also on the
grounds of twictchin while spout the word, "OMG, I've got to get home
so I can play [insert game here]! WHAT!! Not another five
minutes!!"
My games were:
  • Half-Life--Several years

  • Half-Life 2-- Only lasted a month, but I still skiped work to finish the game.

  • Lineage 2-- Played it on free emulation servers, but the craze only lasted me a week.

  • Xenosaga-- My current addiction on the PS2, I'm going to be spending
quite a lot of my christmas break trying to beat this, just so I can
start the sequel. This game is most likly going to have me for a
couple months, especially if they release the third installment any
    time soon.

By the way, those who have not heard or seen Xenosaga, it's an
excellent RPG in the style of Final Fantasy that plays out in the far
future. This game actually feels like an anime; which would
explain why they turned it into an anime series. (currently only in
Japan.)

Why do I do this? I do a simple post, and end up righting a life story.
You know, I've actually got nothing to say

Counter-strike: played it for 2 years.
Battlefield 2: have been playing it a lot (over 300 hours) since it came out.

Counter-Strike and WoW were the two most addictive games I've
played. CS had longer staying power for me, but WoW was more
intense.

i don't find any of the 'big' games anywhere near as addictive as some of the daft little flash games that i've played.

I've not played it, but I vouch for WoW. It's bordering on frightening
  • several of my mates are completely hooked on it, and one even dropped
out of uni due to it. Avoid it at all costs says I.

This almost makes me want to try it.

Sounds dangerous though.

LaIn the last few months its been Battlefield 2, Guild Wars and now World of Warcraft.

WoW's even more adictive than the others cos I play it with my mate who the only time I get to see him is on there.

But other than that its kinda boring running around for ages to get from one place to the next. Yet I carnt seem to stop myself.

[EDIT]

Oh and doing the train noise is quite fun when we had for of us in the guild doing it through stormwind.

But you know what they say small thing amuse small minds and when I play that my mind seems to shrink alot.

No really, don't play it, you'll gain an obsession for getting the Uber
necklace of pwns-vile. And you'll want to kill the evil dragon of
ownage.

Needless to say I have a 10day trial pass for anyone who wants to try, you'll just need to get the game CDs somehow.

Chrono Trigger for about a year (~1996)
Yoshi's Island for an entire summer (I was so close to getting 100% on the game, just one f**king red coin in the world six second hidden level)
I think for about a week I was immersed in Half-Life. I blew through HL1, OP4, and BS in that time and went, "awesome", and then started playing DoD with friends like mad.
Lots more, I think, just can't think of them.

Graphics are quite an important aspect for me, so that throws WoW out the window- so ugly, really is. It looks like Warcraft 3 (yes I know it uses the same game engine, but cumon that game is old!).

I suppose the most addictive, and in some way, time wasting game I've ever done is mapping! I have so much more time for other things now- mapping was enjoyable, but had no long term benefit.

ok..heres the deal...i have this minimal 3 hour day habit on DoDs mapping, but i can get by with a game or two instead just to get me through the night.... mostly research tho, because, well.....i suck. but anyway (**scratches arm repeatedly) my wife wants to go to family counseling, or maybe check me into the clinic for a "steam bath" *cast out the demons so to speak....ive yet to really acknowledge my condition, as is per usual i suppose, and we are (taps foot repeatedly) in negotiations......

That's the thing. As enjoyable as games can be, after i finish a game, i always ask myself, was it worth all those hours? i suppose it would only be worth it if you otherwise are bored, or if you can turn it into a profession like Finger and KFS. Mapping is different somehow cause it's a creative outlet.

As for games, i've been addicted to many. mostly strategy games - caesar2, warlords2, lords of the realm 2, knights and merchants, civilization3, age of wonders series, total war series,... to name a few. Also being in a tfc clan was addictive. But the worst case was Nox.

Someone else thats heard of Nox! That game got me hooked for months while I was at Uni.

Other than that, the only games that have held my interest for an extended period really are Guild Wars and World Of Warcraft. Oh, and I do like to pick Ico up again once in a while to remind me how great it is

Some games I've played are so good that I feel like they've actually
added to my life, more than just being time killers. The same goes for
movies, a few of them really makes you think and feel.

game.

I just rememberd one game. Stepmania, it's an open source DDR simulator
for the PC. At a LAN, one of my friends had downloaded it and he was
playing it when I arrived. The first thing I did was to get it from
him. Then I spent probably 8 hours or something playing it non stop.
Played it the entire night, and most of the LAN too, actually. I played
it many hours a day for weeks. It might just be the most addicting game
I've ever played.
Civilization II and Sid Meyers' Pirates!(the new one)...
Pirates was pretty addicting too, until I happend to check the stats
and realized I was 66 y/o and in bad health, and that the game was like
The Sims only with pirates.

Reno, it's much MUCH cheaper to just buy a connector for a controller you already own (PS2, Xbox, whatever). They're usually pretty cheap. That Xbox controller is $45 USD, I'd imagine it's pretty spendy there too ... and it's a controller.

I usually use my PS2 controller on my computer for certain games. It just has a USB hook up, the connector was like $6. (I'm not converting it, but you get the idea)

I've been adicted to a lot of games, I used to love playing Monster Hunter on PS2 Online.

I mainly play PC games now and this mainly consists of HL1 and 2 mods...
Mainly Sven c-op because I just love co-op games! They are my favourite, Resident evil maps rock so much.

Indeed Habboi. I hope that sometime game makers realize that they
need to put out a good Co-op game. Theyre so much fun, it's a
same there are very few good ones.

Wrong thread Crono, but thanks for the advice anyway  I'd noticed a
few connector things on sale in the past but never really paid them any
attention, kinda fearing they were s**tty third party things that would
barely work! I'll consider picking one up since they are so cheap.

My main reason for wanting the 360 controller is that I'm planning on
getting a 360 at some point and will no doubt want 4 controllers, so
buying one now for my PC means I'll have another later for the 360
itself. Plus it is a kick ass controller - dual analogue triggers plus
shoulder buttons for the win!

They're basically the same threads ... basically.

Also, just to be clear, it's pretty hard to screw up controller cabling. You're stuck on the name brand thing, aren't you? I personally just hate Mad Catz, and I can completly understand why anyone would hate 3rd party products because of them.

To tired to read 3 pages but I have noticed a trend in myself. Games made years ago seemed to hold my attention far longer than anything now. Even when its a newer version of the game I loved so well. For instance:

I played Civ 2 for nearly 3 years.
I played Doom 2 for almost 2.
I played Duke nukem for well over a year.

I never finished HL1
I have yet to finish HL2
I have Quake 4 and have yet to finish it.
I have Civ 4, have yet to play a full game yet.

There have been a lot of games I like and finished in between the titles I posted but none of the last two years worth have been entertaining enough to keep my attention to even complete it.

Perhaps the novelty of the older games is part of the reason but older games seemed to have more "heart" to them.

Hell, I played "Trade Wars" on my old BBS longer than anything this year or last.
There is no history until something happens, then there is.

I wasn't impressed with Splinter Cell. I guess it's just not my
kind of game, but I hated all the sneaking around. I want to kill
some people.
