I have a few ghost stories to share. All from the same location but believable enough to suit most.

The question: Do you believe? Simple as that.

i have an interesting viewpoint on this one

being catholic i believe in purgatory

i also know many people who have lost someone close to them and say they have felt their presence

my theory is that though maybe not ghosts a soul in purgatory may let's say "visit" their loved ones

please don't turn this into a religious debate

I saw somethin' white and spooky and floating and ethereal in my old house back in the day, which could have been a ghost seeing as people were murdered there back in the day. Not that it looked like anybody, but it fit the quintessential definition of ghost.
One day you'll know what you're talking about, I can hardly imagine

You know Orph, not every thread has to have "Recently" in the title, and this one is straying more than a bit from the point of the term "Recently". I think its a fairly interesting thread to post, it just has no place under the "Recently..." blanket. Anyways...

I'm undecided as to my viewpoint on things like this. On one hand, my view of the world is almost entirely scientific, and as such I don't really see any logical reasoning behind a lot of superstitions. On other hand, you do hear a lot of stories and even come across the odd thing yourself that doesn't quite add up in the world as it is normally explained. For those reasons I voted perhaps.

I usually see moving objects in the darkness, but I don't really remember any ghostly experiences. I've also had the typical "corner of my eye" viewings, which are insanely creepy when you're a nine year old home alone.

Me wonders. What if the "incidents" that people qualify as encounters
with ghosts are actually the result of involuntary psychokinesis?

Ghosts. One of those things that i'd like to think exist as a
curiosity, but when it comes to being alone in a dark house (or
whatever), you will convince yourself blind that there's no such thing

Really, I see it decidedly differently I guess. Many of the movies we post are pre-WW2 yet, they are in recently watched. Many of the books are pre-1980 and yet, we post them in recently read.

People die daily. Who's to say that one of them won't be mentioned in this thread?

Anyway, I will think of a more apt title topic for the next "Recently" thread. Perhaps "Recently Crapped" to see what was for supper.. Maybe we can get some interesting recipe's.

Hmm... okay. What I meant was people who claim to be ghost
hunters and search for various clues. Like taking their dogs and
watching them hover to certain areas of a "haunted" area. Or
those like orb things.

I'm saying that science has already disproven many things that people
thought were signs of ghosts, and will be able to explain what those
flying orb thingys are that people talk about.

Regardless of when the films/books/whatever were made, they were still watched or read or listened to recently by the people talking about them, hence the justification of the word recently in the topic title. The point of this thread is (quite clearly, given the poll) - "do you believe in ghosts". Thats not really something that has any relation to time or the term recently.

I'm not trying to say "this is a crap recently thread, make a better one next time", I'm saying "stop using 'recently' in thread titles just for the sake of it"

Point taken, but what if the realization happened recently? What if the ghost visited last night?

I think its close enough to serve the purpose. Although, my belief extends to years ago and it was not recent.

Yeah, I guess it COULD relate to recently, but it doesn't necessarily relate to recently, and in fact probably doesn't. I guess I just think that unless you are specifically asking for recent events (such as is the case with the recently watched, recently read, etc...), it seems silly to put recently in the topic name. Plus the uniformity of having so many threads with the same word in the title seems to annoy me for some stupid reason

Apologies for the derailing here though - as I said before I do like the idea of the thread and don't want to destroy it with this!

OK, next thread "Recently Riled" we can post events like this that piss us off.

Next we can have "Recently annoyed" where we debate just how recently I annoyed Duncan.

Then, the killer thread, "Recently consented" where I bite the bullet and bow down to the wiser course of action.

Then to make things well rounded we can post "Recently Derailed" where we can dig through all the Snarkpit threads and post examples of thread topics gone south.

XXXOOOXXX Duncan.

I believe that ghosts exist, per say, but not as Bs psychics and
psychic detectives and psychic investigators, and psychic dumbsh**s
believe in them.

From my experience and research, they are not physical, or detectable,
but more like in the Six Sense, where most people can't see them, they
only see them if they need to, because they are a supernatural
extension of their own consciousness, in order to either stir up the
pond, or set it to rest.

But that's just my theory.

I agree with Nickelplate and Phatstrings on this one, too.

And while we're on the subject of mysterious mysteries...

My personal experiences all stem from a 2 year period in the same house. The occasions, as far as I could tell were not connected in any way, other than ghostly.

When it first started happening, I ignored the signs as mere coincidence. Noises and bumps, that sort of thing. After all, it was an old trailer. We lived in a fairly nice double-wide in Naylor Arkansas.

When it got to be events you couldn't ignore, then.. Well..

I will type them up, in no particular order, as I cannot remember which happened when.

1) and most memorable... After my wife and I got through, doing our married thing, she get up to go to the bathroom. The room is dark, but I can hear her in there easily enough. In a few minutes the bed sags, just as if someone got in with me. I reach over laughing and said "That was fast, how'd you do that so quick in the dark" She hears me from the bathroom but cannot make out what I am saying and says something non-committal like "Huh?"

I reach all the way across the bed to feel.... Nothing, absolutely nothing but the bed moved. Not bounced like it vibrated. It moved as if someone got in, turned around and lay down on the pillows. Needless to say, I screamed like a girls and ran headlong into the other room..

My wife failed to believe.

2) There was a coat closet in the front entry area for you to hang up jackets and whatnot. On many occasions, the closet was emptied into the living room. Sometimes while we were away, and sometimes while we slept. We never heard anything, just came in to the mess.

3) We came home several times to a sink of dirty, but warm pots and pans. No reason, other than someone cooked something while we were gone.

4) There was a pack of dogs that pillaged the neighborhood. The tipped over trash cans, killed calves and chickens, and beat up neighbors tied up dogs that were on chains. No pack ever entered our property the entire time we lived there. Nothing.

After a time, I stopped worrying about if the ghosts were real. I was kinda glad cause other than mischief, nothing bad ever happened.

come to think of it orph i do have a story

I work a summer job as a lifeguard at a boyscout camp (it doesn't pay well but the guys there are fun to work with)

some of the guys took a trek down to the lakefront to have a smoke and they saw some weird light hovering over the lake, belief me it was there and they weren't smokin weed just cigarettes+

we were sitting out later that night around a fire probly about one in the morning when we heard some footsteps, like boots, not dear or anything

no-one was out there we checked pretty hardcore, and later night, well morning, we were kinda half asleep when someone(thing) banged on our window sounding suspiciously like a hand, and it was just a screen so that's pretty hard to immitate, plus we all heard it, once again noone there

we believe this to be the prior camp ranger who hung himself on camp and is said to roam around at night sometimes, i now believe this to be true as i was scared s**tless

i once seen my mate's head turning into the typical depiction of the devil. big horns, pointy chin, burny fires for eyes etc. it scared the s**t out of me. there were some hallucinogenics involved, of course, but that didn't detract from the fear that i felt. probably heightened it. that was over twenty years ago, and i can still get a shiver up my spine from thinking about it.

Umm... Yes that is exactly the goal of all scientific inquiry: testing theories. Since empirical evidence can never be formulated into a proof in the strict sense of the word, all scientists are capable of is disproving things. We discard the provable falsehoods, and take that which remains to be the truth.

I'll only believe in God and Jesus when one day the clouds part from
the heavens, and Jesus comes down and hands me a glass of water.

I guess that goes for the afterlife as well.

Ghosts eh? Whatever. The idea of them are creepy, however, even if you claim to have "seen" them. It is most likely your imagination. Sure, you convinced yourself it was that ... but whose to say it wasn't something else you didn't know about? People try to explain everything, I think, a lot of people would go nuts if certain things (especially traumatic events) were never "straightened out" in their own head ... however which way. Saying "it was ghosts" is a way to do that.

But, there's no positive evidence, really. It all relates to human physiology.

Seriously, that s**t people use to "find" ghosts, is ridiculous. Checking for disturbances in EM fields ... yeah ... nice move idiot, did you find the ghost next to the power outlet yet?

Also, this is very interesting!

British scientists have shown in a controlled experiment that the extreme bass sound known as infrasound produces a range of bizarre effects in people, including anxiety, extreme sorrow and chills - supporting popular suggestions of a link between infrasound and strange sensations.
...HMM! What uses sub-20 Hz ... oh, I don't know: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Avalanches, Ocean Waves, Meteors ... Chemical and Nuclear explosions ... Whales, Elephants, Rhinoceros, Giraffes, Okapi, Alligators ... etc.

And, Humans have weird experiences when "hearing" something this low. Not saying every "ghost experience" is this ... just not to alienate some people, but this is a lot like "Hey man! Crop circles are everywhere, it's the aliens" when the freakin' people who made those confessed that it was a hoax and people STILL say it was aliens!

Aliens, Ghosts, Vampires, Werewolves ... when will people stop blaming things on fictitious beings!?
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

Did I mention that I believe? Or that I believe because something got into bed with me in the dark? Did I mention that at the time I was regenerating from a young adult sexual encounter?

Do you think, that I was thinking of ghosts at that moment?

I wasn't and I didn't convince myself of the moving bed.

I can understand 100% not believing in ghosts. I cannot accept it when other who do, are told its their imagination. What if, its imaginary, to not believe and not doing so make you the abnormal ones.

well, i dont have a "ghost" story actually, but ive seen a military documented ufo, and that scared the s**t out of everyone on the boat.....had the whole ship topside at one point or nother to check it out.....

but the ones that still really stick with me to this day are the ones from combat......standing watch in the jungle, you here s**t that keeps you spooked, after already being in a super sized state of anxiety....its like an ampifier....the snap of a twig, the rustle of bushes on a still night in the moonlight etc.....but, there is no sound like the face pace of an oncoming enemy onslaught, and the sounds are unmistakable....they move like...."ghosts".....i still wake up in the middle of the night from time to time....

i was an SDV operator....swimmer delivery vehicle....i once laid in and on a riverbank for nearly 72 hours waitng for my squad to return so i could extract them.....f**king leeches....sound...back into the water.....theyre gone.....head out of the water....whew....clean the crap outta my wetsuit....s**t....more sounds....into the water....theyre gone.....i think....better stay here for a bit....2 hours later, back on the bank.....for damn near three f**king days....and when my squad finally did show back up, im not sure ive ever been that happy to see anyone in my life....family included.....

....and the bitch of it is, i'd friggin' do it again if i had to....hooyah!

maybe this should be a new thread eh?.....

I've seen that before, but not once has he turned it into wine for me.

Just saw an interesting study showing grades vs. religious
beliefs. It was quite interesting, showing that those that did
better in school and had higher IQ's were much much less likely to
believe in any sort of higher power.

I'll have to find it...
