Gosh, I've been saying "Boy I'll start mapping" in general for like a week or two now and I haven't done jack crap. I need to get to it, HL1's the bombsauce.

I could post something, but if I recall correctly editor shots are
shunned by SP elite. It will take some time before the first compile is
ready...

So, if this is a competition are we allowed to give feedback here? (I'm assuming so, since you guys are posting screens ... couldn't think of any other reason why)

Hugh, Looks nice.

Did you think about insetting the lights on the left there up into upper wall instead of having them protrude out?

Also, the braces holding the vents on the right are HUGE.

I like the fans though.
Blame it on Microsoft, God does.

I'll try inserting those lights in the walls but I'll probably keep 'em as they are since I like 'em like htat. Depends on how much I like 'em inserted, I suppose. Good point about those vent braces too, hopefully it's just the angle that makes it seem huge, I think they're only 8 units.

Considering that HL1 has the lead in possible maps I like what I am seeing. Both maps look pretty snappy so far.

Sadly, I am almost never any good at commenting on editor shots because the scale always looks awful. You ever notice that if you look at things edge on in the editor they grow?

Anyway, My only comments, and its scale based so ignore it is, the fans are to big/bulky.

and

The grassy area needs upped a bit, the scale repeats to often.

Hope to see some ingame screens soon.

[edit] It seems that ONLY HL1 maps so far. I looked backward and we have 3, possible 4 maps so far.

Nicely done guys.

Hmm... might be entering this. Been working on a centre-piece for a
much larger project, this sort of competition might be just whats
needed to get a picture on how to change/create other areas of the
project.

There don't seem to be any other source screens in here, perhaps this post will inspire others to show their progress.

Hi everyone!

I started working on this competition since it showed up at twhl.

I'm not sure my entry will qualify since It might break some of the rules. It really depends on how you look at it.

Anyway, I had fun making it and that's what counts.

The map is 98% done. I need to do some tweaking with the lightmap grid etc.

I never get less than 30 fps in my old 2,00Ghz geforce4_ti4200 machine,
so everyone will have good performance with this map, I hope.

This just occurs to me and I feel compelled to mention it.

New members joining this site and/or competition.

Please request feedback on your map entries. Snarkpit has been burned far to many times by new members who cause scenes in the forums after a map of theirs has received (to them) some unsolicited feedback.

Please request that they are free to comment.

Thanx

Kasper,

I quite like the 2nd and 3rd shots, but the top half of the first shot
is too monochromatic for my tastes, as far as textures go. I
really like the way the base of the pillars are textures, but I think
the upper parts would look better with some textures with slightly more
color variation to get it away from looking pure beige.

Hey guys, I think I'll be participating in the compo.. after all, it's the compo of the year!
I don't have much yet:
I decided to join for the HL1 engine.. so far I never made much but a robot. It's not quite complete yet, I still have to finish the back, and top, then make my custom textures.. fun fun!
Here, take a look:

You're gonna get killed for a screen that size, Unby, but nice work. I'll have to find you the HL1 robot guy that actually moves around and shoots so maybe, just maybe, you'll be able to make yours do the same and he'll be like "Rawr!" and stuff.

And last but certainly not least. No screenshot will be permitted to be posted exceeding 150k. No exceptions!! This is to ensure that our 56k members have a fighting chance to be a participant in the WIP thread. Thumbnails are preferred as well.
Under normal circumstances, Snarkpit will only allow up to 100k images posted. This is a set standard that was worked out ages ago and voted upon by the entire membership roster.

However, this competition was posted at various websites and being such, many people would be competing who are not aware of the 100k standard so I upped it to 150k in favor of the newer arrivals.

This number is non-negotiable.

I will allow 24 hours from the time I post this comment to permit you to resize your screens.

If you need assistance in optimization, please feel free to use my tutorial. It was created specifically for broadband users.

As to the robot map, I cannot wait to be permitted to see the screens. Fix them ASAP so I can.

I resized the images for thumbnails.. if thats what you mean.. If not, PM me at TWHL and explain.. if you want the jpeg's to be completely resized. Right now the jpgs are around 200-220Kb but are not posted in this thread.. (the thumbnails are, but if you mean the actually picture, I'll resize them tommorrow)

Resize them, yes.

The actual location of the images is irrelevant. The only important thing is when I or anyone else on 56k clicks on them that they are under 150k.

(You'll get extra credit for each K under 100. )

And tomorrow is fine.

I am genuinely curious to see this HL1 made robot.

Unbreakable: That might take some time, but I will see what I can do.

Mr.INSANE: Most of the textures
are placeholders, I'll take a better grass texture from the yard as
soon as the rain stops. And then I'll scale it up and give it an
angle so it won't look so bad.

I have a question for the modeling people here. My intention was to
create some static prop models for HL1 and use them with the env_sprite
entity(it's possible I've done it before). But my question is: Does the
.3ds format contain UV-map
data? My intention was to make these models in Blender and unwrap them
in it and then export them to Milkshape(shareware, I'm out of dough so
don't tell me to buy it) and turn them there into HL1 compliant .smds, is it possible without losing the UV-map?

I made this map before I actually saw this contest, but it's built in 2006, so I don't think there's any problem
Its situated area is the inside of a human body, it's not like it ruend out perfect or anything, but it's really nice and runs really well on older rigs.

http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/12145

Kev_Boy, did you read the rules? IMO that's not a single self-contained area. Sorry to bitch, but that's the case.

Like I said I'm not the one to judge. I personally want a second opinion on this one.

Edit: Disregard that. The map must be previously unreleased and you
have already released your map, thus to me it seems unfit. But I'm
still waiting for official stand on this.
Also, anything submitted, be it new or old must be unreleased.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the Pit and the time has come to throw my hat in the ring. Here is what I have been working on, dm_romanpool. The first pic is of the actual roman pool that is on the Hearst estate in San Simeon, CA. Thanks to Dissonance for that pic. Screen shots directly follow. Everything can also be viewed at www.natcarm.com. There is a beta download available there if you would like to take it for a spin. My completed entry will not include the bathrooms in that beta version. I am still working on a 3-d enviornment for the skybox and a couple more models. Let me know what you all think!

an actual roman pool in California? /me checks history books.

Nice map though, very good use of water. I think the end without
windows needs some work though, looks a little blocky and out of place

Hearst Castle. A conglomerate of Mostly European Castles purchased by William Randolph Hearst and shipped to USA for re-assembly. It's quite the spectacle.

Hearst was a man of questionable ethics btw.

Ahem.... back to the thread.

You've done quite an amazing job of texture reproducing. I like what I saw so far. Rather than removing the bathrooms for the competition, why don't you just clip them off at the doorways for the time being. What say ye judges?

Already discussed and approved before the events beginning. I am not sure which thread but, the answer is "YES"

You may build any quantity of rooms you wish, as long as you cannot enter any of them but ONE.

Just keep an eye on those screens. 150k may be the limit, but cramming a page full of them into one post still hurts like hell.

Use my tutorial PLEASE.

Looking good guys - this competition is beginning to get more interesting

dewdle: Looking good, glad to see it coming together well. I'm really interested to see what you do with the surrounding environment.

Mr.INSANE: Also coming on well. I still think you could stand to make some of the architecture a little more subtle however - things like the pillars holding the walkway to the ceiling, and the blocks between those, could really benefit from being less bulky. I'd also watched your exterior walls - the inside of the room is quite detailed and fancy and that helps mask it, but really its just situated in a box. Make those outside walls less flat somehow; pillars, alcoves, slightly recessed sections, whatever. Keep it up

Sorry for the supersized post earlier. I've made thumbnails for it now. Just learned the BBcode to do that.

Orpheus, does it matter how many entries we submit? I'd like to do two.
One with the robot is the outside base.. but I also want to show of my detail to be inside a building.

No limits to the submissions, as long as the guidelines are adhered to for each map.

I am going to post at the other sites a reminder that ONLY Snarkpit members can vote on their favorites. This site doesn't allow non-members to post in the forums.

I don't want a mad rush the day after the comp ends with a bunch of outsiders spamming the votes.

Snarkpit is pretty fair. The winner doesn't have to be a long time member, not by any means.
