I had hip-hop group
Ugly Duckling suggested to me the other day, and listened to their album "Taste the Secret". It's a rather wierd album, with most of the tracks based around a made-up fast food restaraunt called Meatshake (which serves exactly what the name suggests). Their lyrics are all light-hearted and humourous, thrown against fun, upbeat, funky tunes. I'm not a huge hip-hop fan, though am trying to look for more along this style. I think
this video kinda sums them up really
Also, as a new
Rip Slyme obsessive, I checked out the side project a couple of them have going -
Teriyaki Boyz. They seem to be fairly "big news", as they have collaborated with the Beastie Boys, Pharrell, Kanye West, and other well known Western hip-hop names. Personally I don't think they are a patch on Rip Slyme, who are just so damn funky and fun its near impossible to dislike them, but they do have a song called Kamikaze 108 that I really enjoyed and a couple of others were pretty good.
Actually bought quite a few CDs recently, now I think about it. I finally found a copy of the
Jack's Mannequin album "Everything In Transit" to buy, which I still really enjoy. It's soppy, pop-emo music, but hey, we all have our weaknesses right! I loved walking to catch the bus home to it, especially in s**tty weather. It just felt right
Along the same veins, though more punk and less emo, were a couple of
Punchline albums. I don't rate either album all that highly, to be honest, but there are some decent tunes on both of them. The intro and ending songs on the new album 37 Everywhere - "Flashlight" and "Exactly" respectively - are probably my favourites. If you like throwaway pop-punk like I do, they are probably worth checking out.
Finally, I also got the album "While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets" by
Cobra Starship. I'm a big fan of Gabe Saporta's previous band Midtown, so I picked this up hoping for something not too distant from them. Well, it isn't exactly Midtown-esque, but I've still enjoyed the album quite a lot. Its not particularly deep or challenging music - what did you expect from the band who did the
Snakes on a Plane theme tune - but its got a fair bit of variety and nods to genres outside his usual style. No, the rest of the album isn't much like the Snakes on the Plane tune, before you ask. Basically its dance-rock. A lot lighter than his rather dark last Midtown album.
