Map 1 Round 1
Wednesday, May 16, through Wednesday, May 30

General Info
[*] The goal of this competition is to end up with a complete, playable single-player map with contributions from several mappers.
[*] Each round lasts two weeks, and the entries from that round are put to a forum vote to choose the winner and the base for the next round.
[*] There won't be a predetermined number of rounds, it'll simply run until the map is done or close to it.
[*] After the map is done or close to it, the winners are welcome to polish it to a finished state (or close to it  ).
[*] Judging will be based on Aesthetics, Craftmanship, Creativity, and Game Flow, keep those in mind when working on your entry.
Guidelines
[*] You're free to change any part of the map, but try to assess the amount of work it took to create something. People don't like to have their time and effort wasted. if you nuke something that someone spent hours toiling over, have a damn good reason.
[*] Don't add miles/km of new blocky dev textured map area, think about where the player just was, where they are now, and focus on where they're going in the immediate future.
Custom Content
[*] You're welcome to add whatever you want; Textures, models, sounds, faceposer scenes, etc. But put them in hl2\<asset folder>\snarkpit_mfb so people don't have stuff in 48 different folders all for the same map.
Submissions & Filenames
[*] Replace "start" in the file name with your forum name or an abbreviation/ shorthand of it. For example, I would use 'snark_mfb01_round1_bvs'
[*] Send a zip archive containing your entry, a text file explaining your additions and changes, and any other needed files (in proper forder structure if custom content) as an attachment to snarkpit.chainmap (at) gmail.com
So what are you waiting for? Pick up the base VMF and get mapping!

Perhaps, assuming people know how to use them, you could get contributors to vis-group their additions to the map. That way you keep a good record of the contributions, and make it easier to track what has been done and when.

Ah great thanks Reno!

Question: Is it alright to have the map branch off into another map; that is, can I have a level change cause having all my additions in one map is too much?

Also, for the additional content, would it be alright to initially packrat it into just the .bsp and submit that, and if that entry won, THEN post a .zip with all the subfolders fleshed out for others to work with?

Ok, so I'm a little confused here, do we just start working off of one
branch of this starter map? Or what? Or do we map out all the different
paths it gives us? So basicly my question is, this starter map is the
begining to the single player map and we just map off of it? I just
want to know so I don't start mapping something the wrong way. Thanks!

For this first part, you improve the starter map

For the others, you add to the current map

Its a competition that ends up a compilation

Spent all Sunday working on my entry. Actually got alot accomplished; "compile only ents" for the win!

Hope we get a few entries, as I haven't had this much fun with HL2 in a while, and i'm excited to see other peoples work.

I have been working quite diligently on my map as well for the past three days. Just got through recording some of my buddies' voices today, and watched "War of the Worlds" with Tom Cruise again today for some more inspiration. I'm definitely into this competition!

As a way to display the levels (you know, besides the usual practice of playing the level), it might be cool to record demo's of a playthrough, then capture that with Fraps. We can make little movies of everyones entry.

I'm working on an entry aswell, just hoping I'll make the deadline.
This is a great contest idea. SP owns but I always get turned off by the enormous amount of work I'd have to put into making a map of my own, so this works out great.
Can't wait to see everyone's ideas.

And can I pimp the old snarkpit sawblade as a candidate for inclusion in the map?

Entry sent! Can't wait to see what everyone has done!

I ended up putting a crapload of time into my map; about 4 full weekend days - 40+ hours. I've dabbled in singleplayer HL2 stuff before, but forgot most of it. The bulk of my time was spent relearning how to create scripted sequences that work; man those things are finnicky! Once I figured out the quirks though, I was able to throw them together pretty quickly.

I packed as much as I could into the space of the base map; creating very little new space, but rather finding the challenge in milking what was there for everything I could. Hope everybody gives it a playthrough!

btw... i just posted mine in the maps section since I plan on developing it further, regardless of the comp. I'll get some screenshots up there soon.

Sent mine in as well. I actually ventured off far from the base map, but I think the game flow is all in-sync, it flows pretty well I think.

In stead of scripted sequences, I did all .vcd's. I find you have A LOT more control of the actors in those. I even had some friends lend their voices, and mine as well, can you guess which one?!?! I won't be able to play anybody's entry until June 12th (going on vacation) so, be sure to post pics!!

Good luck everyone!
